Preparation! I admire our team so much.

I left the clinic late last night and saw this as I walked out.

The dental for tomorrow was prepared for,

and the surgery for tomorrow was prepared for.

How do you get your team to do this?

It's about the culture, the sense of responsibility and the achievement of getting things done well.

Our values are: "Our TEAM works with EMPATHY, PROFESSIONALISM and INTEGRITY to achieve great RELATIONSHIPS with our patients, their families and each other so that we can achieve the best outcomes."

Our team chose these values, and they live and work by them.

They CHOOSE to have everything ready for the next person and patient that comes in.

A heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Lauren of Bottle Tree Vets!
We are so proud to have had the opportunity to work with Dr. Lauren in establishing her practice in rural Queensland. Driven by a passion to create a mother-friendly vet practice, she has partnered with us at Smooth Operating Vets to bring this vision to life.
As working mothers ourselves, we understand the challenges of balancing career and family, and we are committed to supporting other women in the veterinary field to do the same.
Dr Lauren took a courageous leap in starting her own practice, driven by her desire for financial, professional, and personal fulfilment. She made the wise decision to purchase a building and sought the assistance of local businesses to set it up. This not only empowered her to create a space that aligns with her vision but also contributed to the growth and development of the community.
It is no surprise that Dr. Lauren quickly gained recognition in the local community and became a magnet for other veterinary mums and support staff who were drawn to the concept of a mother-friendly vet practice.
This marks a significant shift in the veterinary field, as the majority of professionals are women who understand how to collaborate, support one another, and successfully run a business. We firmly believe that practices like Dr. Lauren's are the future of our profession.

Breakfast Session at the Bain Fallon Conference 2024

In this video, I discuss the challenges faced by veterinary women in balancing their careers and personal lives. Data shows a significant shift in the workforce demographics and the need for better workplace structures. Action is needed to retain talented professionals and create a supportive environment. Viewers are encouraged to consider the impact of gender balance and explore solutions for a more inclusive veterinary practice.

When you are booked to go to the Northern Hemisphere for one job, you find another reason to go and spend time there!

I was invited to speak in South Carolina, the USA, so I looked for another vet conference to attend.

The WVAC said I could come and speak at their Congress in Cape Town!! And so, I did.

I'm continuously talking about the veterinary women in our profession, as well as the opportunities and
challenges!

There are so many of us now. Things are changing, and we are designing the profession to work in a more flexible, friendly way as well as being professional and business-wise.
Watch this space!

Veterinary women are buying and starting practices. They see the financial, professional, and personal benefits of doing this.

A huge thank you to the vet moms in Beaufort! I had a wonderful time with you all, though did not quite understand how you said "duodenum", but other than that I think that we all understood each other well. What we had in common was a love and understanding of our profession and of each other.

As Vetmoms or vetmums as we say here! it's different to being a vetdad. It really is, and we all acknowledge it, work with it, support and encourage each other.

As the keynote speaker from Australia, I told stories of my life on a cattle station, the first time I took my baby to work, out mustering, and what I learned from our working dogs. Some of the most important leadership qualities, patience, kindness, teaching and finding the gift that each of us has and enhancing that gift. Thank you Moms with a DVM!!

Are you having these discussions with your team so that they know that you want them to return?

We want them to come back because they are amazing and know your systems, team, clients, patients, and culture. In fact, they helped build it!

There are some challenges to returning to work when one has a small child; we make provisions for them. One of the biggest is childcare, and I know there is a 2-year waiting list in some areas!

However, one of the greatest things happening is parental care, where the father can also take time off work to raise their children.

Times are changing, and we are ensuring that Mikayla can come to our clinic if and when she chooses to.

Our profession cannot afford to lose these amazing and highly dedicated vet techs/ nurses.
