🌟 New Year's Resolution - Weight Control 🌟

Just like us humans, pets also have a tendency to put on a little weight over the holidays! ⏲🐶

When our pets are over nourished and are carrying a little extra weight, you may not be aware how much it can affect their health. They lack the ability to exercise themselves and have a tendency to retain weight, putting them at risk for becoming obese.

Even being as little as 20% overweight can greatly increase the risk of your pet developing serious health conditions. As their body fat increases, so does the risk for:

🐾 Osteoarthritis
🐾 Reduced mobility
🐾 Increased physical injury
🐾 Kidney disease
🐾 Respiratory disease
🐾 Cancer
🐾 Shortened life expectancy
🐾 Bladder stones
🐾 Diabetes mellitus
🐾 Hepatic lipidosis (cats only)

We have a tailored weight loss program to ensure that your pet reaches their goal weight. Our vet nurses will weigh and measure your pet and discuss a specific weight loss plan for them. ❤

For more information please give our friendly nurses a call. 📞

🌟 Pool Safety for Dogs 🌟

Keep your pup safe with these 5 essential tips: ⛱💦

🐾 Fencing - check that your fencing is pet proof. Cover gaps and check regularly for holes or tunnel digging. Keep furniture away from the fence to prevent your dog from jumping over.
🐾 Tarps and Netting - remove toys and flotation devices from the pool to prevent any temptation for your dog to jump in and play. Pool covers can trap pets beneath the water if they fall in. Remove any tarps or nets if you are going out.
🐾 Swimming Lessons - not all dogs know how to swim. Some are unable to swim due to their anatomy or coat type. Invest in a flotation device or life jacket to help keep your dog afloat while you teach them how to reach the pool steps.
🐾 Exit Strategy - teach your dog where the stairs are. Consider graduated steps if building a pool, or install a non-slip ramp.
🐾 Learn Doggy CPR - we can teach you CPR techniques. Speak to our vets at your next consultation or call us for more information. You could save your dog's life. 💓

🌟 Fireworks, Parties and Pets 🌟

New Year's Eve is one of the scariest, most stressful times of the year for pets and wildlife, with unpredictable loud noises, strong smell of explosives and flashing lights. 🥳💥
Here are our tips for keeping your pets safe during the celebrations:

🎆 Please be as prepared as possible, including walking dogs in the afternoon, feeding large meals to encourage sleeping and getting them used to firework sounds.

🎆 Shut all external doors/windows, keep curtains tightly shut and provide quiet safe space/den/room filled with your pet's favourite toys/treats/blankets.

🎆 Distract pets with TV/radio/music (reggae works apparently!), act as if nothing's wrong/different and reward calm behaviour.

🎆 For particularly nervous pets, contact us in advance for advice on safe medications, plug-ins, sprays, anxiety jackets, etc.

🎆 Keep water bowls topped up as anxious pets may drink more.

🎆 Check microchip details are up to date too in case of escapes.

Wishing you a very Happy New Year 💞

🌟 Fun Fact Friday 🌟

Why do cats like to eat alone❓😺

Pet cats still retain many behaviours of their wild ancestors, including how they hunt and eat, which are usually solitary behaviours for cats. This doesn’t mean that cats will not eat food when they are near each other – their motivation for food can override their desire to eat alone. But, given the choice most cats would prefer to eat out of sight of other cats. 🐈

You might notice that conflict can arise while food is prepared or during feeding times in multi-cat households (even in socially bonded cats). This is because cats are often in a high state of arousal then and may compete with other cats for access to food, resulting in fighting or even chronic stress.

Some helpful tips to prevent conflict when preparing and providing food in multi-cat homes include:

🔹Pre-preparing food to reduce the time the cats are waiting for food near one another

🔹Feeding several small meals (as divided portions of their normal amount of food) over a 24-hour period eg, 5-6 smaller meals rather than 2-3 larger meals. This mimics the cats’ natural feeding pattern more closely and can help prevent hunger and competition over food

🔹Using timed, automatic or microchip feeders for each cat so food is readily available

🔹Feeding cats in different rooms, ensure the doors are shut so they cannot see one another

🔹Feed cats on different levels, such as one cat on the floor and another on a table

🔹Using a visual barrier between them, such as a large cardboard box or opposite sides of a kitchen island

🌟 Pancreatitis Warning❗ 🌟

Every year around Christmas time we see a noticeable increase in the number of pancreatitis cases in dogs. Pancreatitis is an acute, painful inflammation of the pancreas and can be fatal in many cases, so it’s important for pet parents to be aware of the causes and symptoms.

🟢 Causes of Pancreatitis

The pancreas works to help your dog’s body metabolise sugars and produce insulin. The pancreas also produces enzymes that are vital for digesting nutrients. With all of the extra cooking at this time of year, many dogs are affected by pancreatitis due to being fed off-cuts and table scraps that are greasy and high in fat. 🍗

🟢 Symptoms of Pancreatitis

Dogs with pancreatitis usually fall ill suddenly, often within a matter of hours. The most common symptoms of pancreatitis include:

🐾 Hunched posture
🐾 Painful abdomen
🐾 Distended, enlarged abdomen
🐾 Poor appetite
🐾 Lethargy
🐾 Vomiting
🐾 Dehydration
🐾 Diarrhoea

Your dog can become critically and even fatally ill very quickly, so if you suspect your dog may have pancreatitis you should call us immediately or visit your nearest vet emergency hospital. ⚠️☎️
