If you are having mouse problems and using rodenticides please read this!

Recent times have seen a dramatic increase in the number of dogs & cats with rat bait poisoning at RVC. Dogs and cats can be affected by ingesting the bait directly or by consuming a poisoned rodent/s.

Many baits which claim to be safe for pets are in fact not and any ingestion should be taken as potentially life-threatening.

Rat poisons typically contain anticoagulants like warfarin, brodifacoum, or bromadiolone. These substances prevent blood from clotting, leading to bleeding. The poison takes hours to days to show signs of toxicity, making it even more dangerous as symptoms can be easily overlooked.

Signs of Poisoning
Symptoms of rat bait intoxication in dogs may vary depending on the type of poison ingested. Common signs include:
• Lethargy or weakness
• Inappetance
• Pale gums
• Nosebleeds or unusual bruising
• Difficulty breathing, coughing possibly with blood
If you are concerned you dog has eaten ratbait we can easily test your pet. Please call us if you are concerned, patients are much easier to treat if presented early.

The Importance of Dog Dentistry🐶

As dog owners, we often focus on our pets’ diet, exercise, and grooming, but one area that often gets overlooked is oral health. Dental disease can cause inflammation, pain, and tooth loss. If left untreated, it can lead to severe infections that may spread to other parts of the body, such as the heart, liver, or kidneys.

It’s not always easy to tell when your dog has dental problems, but some signs to look out for include:
• Bad breath (halitosis)
• Excessive drooling or difficulty eating
• Red or swollen gums
• Yellow or brown teeth
• Pawing at the mouth or face
If you notice any of these symptoms, it’s a good idea to schedule a veterinary dental check-up.

For more tips on dog dental care or to schedule an appointment for a dental check-up, contact us at Roma Vet Clinic today!

* the photos attached are a before and after of one of our patients last week. He underwent a dental scale and polish, and also had several teeth removed.

Farewell Caron
We are very sad to advise that this will be Dr Caron Brindley’s last week at Roma Vet clinic. Caron is an exceptional small animal vet and is a wealth of knowledge having her memberships in small animal medicine. She has mentored a number of up and coming vets over the years and we will be incredibly sad to see her leave after her 9 years of service. We wish her all the best but do hope to see her back at some stage!
