June is the last month to get your dogs free heartworm test at Maranoa Vets.

Since April we have been running a promotion: free heartworm test if you are willing to get your dog on the annual heartworm injection.

As heartworm cases appear to be on the rise in our region we recommend all dogs receive regular heartworm prevention. As life get busy, and people forget monthly pills (or the dog may vomit them up) we encourage dog owner to use the annual injection and have found it to be superior protection. Additionally, as the annual heartworm prevention injection has 3 months reach back, if your a little late your pooch will still be ok, whereas if your late with your pills, then you have left your doggo without adequate protection.

From Friday, 31 May 2023, residents will begin to receive their annual dog and cat registration renewals for the 2023/24 financial year.

Registration renewals are due by 30 June 2024, upon payment your pet registration will be valid from 1 July 2024 to 30 June 2025. If your dog or cat is over 12 weeks of age it is a legal requirement to have them registered and microchipped. These activities are all part of being a responsible animal owner and greatly assist Council in reuniting lost animals with their owners.

Council continues to support responsible animal ownership by offering a significant registration discount if your pet is desexed, with pensioner concession also available.

Animal owners are encouraged to take the opportunity to review the details on this years’ renewal notice to ensure all animal and contact details are up to date. Should an update be required, please contact Council’s Community Safety or Customer Service team for assistance.

Upon payment of registration, the renewal notice serves as your pet’s registration certificate. This year’s registration tag is orange and should be affixed to your animal at all times. Please remember to remove outdated tags.

A secure online payment portal is available allowing registration payments to be made with a credit card. Visit the Council website www.maranoa.qld.gov.au and click the Make a Payment tab.

Other options include:
🖥️ Online via BPay
☎️ By phone to Council – call 1300 007 662
✉️ By mail – PO Box 620, Roma Qld 4455
ℹ️ By visiting a Council Customer Service Centre

If residents have not received a renewal notice by Friday, 14 June, please contact Council’s Community Safety Team on 1300 007 662. Please note that failing to register your dog or cat may result in a $309 fine being issued.

Brave pet winner = Marshall

Marshall presented with a right hindlimb lameness with bent /curled looking toes and with his foot at odd angles. X-rays revealed a tarso-metatarsal luxation (basically where the foot disconnected from the hock). Sadly this is a common injury from ‘hanging’ or having the foot caught up in something and is an injury that cannot really be ‘fixed’.

Treatment options presented to owner:

1) refer to specialist for hock arthrodesis : the joint is put back into place and the joint fused. He would then lose the ability to move part of his hock- he could step forward but it’s more of a stiff gait . 8 week approx recovery period.
2) limb amputation- loss of leg but only 2 week recovery period.

Marshall is now a member of the tripod cat community.

Well done Marshall! You were very brave to have endured such a nasty injury.

Brave Pet Winner: Squishie

Squishie is a new member of the tripod cats community . After rupturing his left patella (knee cap) tendon , a rare and unusual injury, he was left unable to bear weight on his left hindleg. Although the injury would likely be rather painful, Squishie seemed rather unphased by it all and appeared to be left wondering what all the fuss is about.

Squishie‘s cool and calm demeanor continued during his hospital stay and post operative periods. Despite having his left hind leg removed he was up and about quickly and back to being one very cool cat.

Well done Squishie! You were so brave!

Blood donor Hero: Snowy
Brave Pet winner: Henry

Snowy was called in on the evening of 27th March to help a fellow doggo in need. Henry, the food loving Corgi pup, had been away visiting family a few days prior, and little did the owner know, there was rat bait present at the family property. Poor little Henry presented white as a sheet, unwilling to stand or eat and struggling to breathe as he was bleeding into his chest quite rapidly.

Luckily for us Snowy came in promptly and donated his blood to save Henry‘s life.
Thanks Snowy, you truely are a life saver!

Well done to Henry who survived , with his appetite and colour back to almost normal within hours of the blood transfusion.

Brave pet winner: Miley

Miley presented in feb 2023 to be tested for heartworm and commence heartworm prevention so she can be a blood donor.
Sadly, she tested positive for heartworm and spent the next 12months receiving treatments- various pills, injections etc as per treatment protocols.

We are pleased to announce that Miley is now heartworm free! 🐶❤️

Reminder: heartworm testing is currently free until end June if you‘re wanting to commence the annual heartworm preventative injection (Proheart). As heartworm appears to be on the rise in our region we recommend ALL dogs receive heartworm preventatives. Watch this page for more stories on doggos who‘ve survived heartworm and heartworm treatment.

April is Skin and Coat awareness month here at Maranoa Vets…. And we can see why!

The recent rain and moist conditions, has generated grass growth and increased pollens.
As a result we have been seeing a rise in “itchy” pets and ear infections.

Some tips and facts :

# Remember the inside of the ear is an extension of the skin- so when your pets’ skin is inflamed , often so is the skin in the ears making them more susceptible to infections.

# bathing does help reduce pollen and contact allergens on the coats surface, but over washing can cause coat drying and dandruff. We recommend NOT to bath more than once a fortnight and use a conditioner after shampooing to restore oils in the coat.

# ‘atopy’ is the term we use for pets who have a genetic tendency to develop allergic diseases/ have heightened immune responses to common allergens.

Last year in May I got to be apart of Mr Buddy‘s 18th birthday celebrations. Sadly, in feb this year it was time to say goodbye. I‘m forever grateful to have been Mr Buddy‘s vet for the past 12 years. He is dearly missed by many.
He his now home from cremation and back with his adoring family.
Fly high my friend xoxo. Almost 19 years… what an amazing life you had.

EDIT: HE HAS BEEN CAUGHT AND CHARGED.

I‘m saddened to announce we were broken into on Friday morning a bit after 2am.

The individual gained entry via the surgery window and triggered motion detection alarms when he reached reception (there are more in other regions too he had not yet reached). He fled as soon as the loud alarms were triggered. There were no animals in the regions he passed through, nothing was taken ( he was in only for a very short period of time). I attended immediately along with police.

We understand 5+ other businesses were broken into over 2 nights.

Rest assured we have excellent video footage (although my pics of such may not reflect this) and have upgraded our external security with further upgrades to follow. The police have fingerprints and our external and internal video footage.

I thought it best to share to avoid inaccurate rumors (I have heard some already).

Stay safe
Jo
