Brave pet winner Bosco! ❤️

Bosco came in for a check up, desexing and catch up on routine preventatives nov last year (2023) by his new pet parent. Whilst Bosco seemed to be an easy going, happy 7 year old doggo, he had not always had an easy life. Bosco was scheduled for destruction due to no fault of his own (owner unwilling to keep him) and his basic health care had been somewhat neglected. Very fortunate for him for his recent rescue. 💕

We soon learned that although Bosco appeared outwardly happy and healthy he had a secret inside…. He had heartworm 🪱. Heartworm is a life threatening condition spread by mosquitos, and treatment can be costly.

Bosco’s new dog mum was not deterred by the challenges and wanted the very best for her best mate. She pushed on… he was desexed, vaccinated and started his 12 month journey of heartworm treatment (various pills, painful injections, numerous blood test etc). Bosco never complained and seemed to love coming in 🥰.

We are pleased to share that Bosco is now heartworm free!!! He has had all his routine health care up to date and is really is living his best life ❤️.

Well done to Bosco for being so Brave and his now dog mom for sticking by him and giving him the life he deserves xo.

Brave Pet Winner…. Metallic Millions! (aka Mill) 🐎

Mill presented to us Monday 14th October with what appeared to be a low grade colic (abdominal pain) ongoing for over 24hours. Although she appeared clinically fairly well with regular heart rate and respiratory rate, normal temperature and desires to eat she was tender in her abdomen (demonstrated with occasional leg lifting and flank watching) and Mill’s knowledgeable and proactive owner just knew her horse wasn’t quite right. A veterinary examination was performed which revealed limited gut sounds on the left side, and her re**al exam was not normal (bit of extra gas and a possible issue was felt near her left spleen- kidney area, but nothing terribly spectacular albeit not quite normal) . Mill’s faecal tests and blood work were normal. Mill was given pain medications, nasogastric intubation, but later that evening she was noted to be uncomfortable again and her gut sounds were still limited on the left. Refractory colics (ones that persist despite pain relief and medical intervention) typically require surgical intervention, so Mill was referred to the wonderful Darling Downs Vets (equine specialist in Westbrook). There it was found she had 3 displacements and she underwent surgical correction of her bowels on Tuesday 15th (the same day she arrived).

We are pleased to say Mill is home and healing very well. We are so thankful to have met this fabulous mare, witness her bravery through a very nasty condition and thankful to her owner who listened and took the horse to refferal before the condition got very serious and potentially too late. We are also thankful to our mentors and the referral veterinary team. Well done to all involved but especially Mill, she is the brave superstar!

Monday 11th November 2024 marks the anniversary of the Armistice that ended fighting with Germany in World War 1.

Every year at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, millions around the world pause in silence to remember the sacrifices many have made so we can enjoy life today.

What do the poppies mean?

Red poppy- most well know, worn to honor those who died in war, conflicts and peacekeeping operations.

White poppy- is worn to remember those who died in conflict, but with a focus on achieving peace and ending war. Some people feel that the red poppy glorifies war and conflict, instead they may choose to wear a white poppy.

Purple poppy- these were introduced in 2006 by the charity Animal Aid as a way of remembering the animals that lost their lives at war.

Black poppy- introduced in 2010 to remember the contributions of African, Black, West Indian, Caribbean, pacific Islands and Indigenous communities in the war.

Multi-colour poppy is about serving together.

Brave pet winner, Kostya! 😻

This little kitty was found trapped in a fence being attacked by dog. The good samaritan who found the kitty, now his owner, bought him in for assessment and treatment. He was missing a few toes on his front right foot and a lot of skin and soft tissue. He was started on antibiotics and pain medications until the open wounds healed. Due to his fighting spirit to survive his new human had named him Kostya Tszyu.

We are pleased to share that despite Kostya’s obvious deformity he can ran, climb and play and healed considerably well.

Well done little Kostya Tszyu.

I reckon that is a wrap on bull testing season… Whilst Vegas will miss cleaning the dirty, field record sheets 🤣, I think we processed the last of our regular bulls for annual testing this morning. It was an early start to beat the heat.

I believe more bulls were tested this year than any year I have been at MVS (since 2012). Whilst the spread of joining has become later or widened for some over the years (we’ll let you decide who does it best), we are pleased to report more people are opting for morphology testing in addition to the all too common just crush side semen and physical exams. Morphology results have had far less wait times too this year overall.

Here‘s to the breeding season albeit for some it‘s well started 💃 🌧️🤞goodluck!
