Train n Engage
Train n Engage Sessions so much fun for all. My little grandson doing his first dog training session with his dog Pickle ❤️
Houdini learning to be calm around doorways.
Houdini wants to tell you he was very proud of his efforts this week and managed to walk calmly on lead around our training paddock with big distractions and no pulling. We are learning doorway manners too. ❤️❤️⭐️
This puppy is going to be a large dog. Adult Bernese Mountain Dogs can weigh between 38 to 50kgs , so lifting in and out of the car or up onto the grooming table is not an option. Today ramp training and a positive association with the grooming table.

Why make training boring?
Morgan’s story is a special one.
Morgan’s story is a special one, that makes progress forward so amazing.
This young lady was rescued, and didn’t have a great start in her previous life and finds new situations outside the comfort of her safe place her backyard and inside her home overwhelming where she just barks, hackles up, refused food, contact , unable to relax and settle.
Morgans first visit did give me a good idea of what we were dealing with, her anxiety levels were off the scale, she was unable to take food, unable to relax and constantly barked with hackles up.
This is visit 3 and to say she went amazing was an understatement.
Morgan was able to self settle and use enrichment stations set out for her, she did spook bark anxiously at a few things but was able to be redirected to predictable patterns that her family had been teaching her as part of their homework.
Morgan now gets most of her food either in enrichment or for training and does searches for her food.
Part of her training is activities designed to build confidence. I think 🤔 her family were surprised that she was able to go outside and be calm, this was her first time outside at Leaps and with all the platform work she was able to walk across the dog walk and she thought she was such a clever girl she repeated it. ❤️❤️❤️
Morgan still has a long way to go but we are celebrating the little things. Well done team Morgan.

Rally obedience
Sometimes obedience gets a bad name, due to outdated old fashioned training methods. We don’t use force!! Our methods are positive for you and your dog.
We want our dogs to love training with us no matter what they are learning .
Checkout Ziggy’s tail, she is loving doing rally and working with her owner Trish.
I think that foundation work (obedience ) if trained with positive reinforcement is important to life skills, having a good recall, a dog who can walk calmly beside you are all part of life and living with a domesticated dog, what matters is how you train your dog.
We don’t expect a dog to stay for hours and be a robot, doesn’t matter if you’re training a retrieve , heelwork, tricks or a simple sit, it’s about the way you train it. This video shows Ziggy is enjoying working with Trish.

Should you walk your dog every day?
The Leaps & Bounds dog crew enjoy a walk however for some dogs and their owners a walk can be stressful.
A walk can provide your dog with exercise, mental stimulation and an opportunity to sniff and to fulfil some of your dogs natural needs, however if your dog is not enjoying their walk and is stressed, overwhelmed and reacting to their surroundings is the walk really good for them?
Walking your dog every day when they are a reactive dog is not good for them or you. Rehearsing reactive behaviour is not going to help your dog but instead is more likely to increase the behaviour as your dog is exposed to a stressful event everyday without time to decompress.
When dogs are under stress they produce cortisol and adrenaline. If they are under repeated stress it is more difficult for them to get back to a baseline and can be bad for their health .
We can provide our dogs with mental stimulation, scent games and other activities that will allow our dogs to relax and get the exercise they need in a safe way that you can both enjoy.
If you have an anxious or reactive dog on a walk, don’t feel guilty about skipping the walk, choose another activity your dog enjoys or find a quiet location for your dog to walk and sniff.
