Following the recent kangaroo massacre, we are calling for ATCW permits for the culling of kangaroos in Gobarup to be revoked, and no new permits to be issued.
Please email Steve Dimopoulos, the Minister for Environment [email protected] and the Conservation Regulator [email protected] to call for an end to ATCW permits in Gobarup and to voice your concerns about these horrible incidents.
The purpose of the ATCW (Authority to Control Wildlife) permits is to reduce the number of kangaroos in an area. This has now occurred as a result of this incident, along with another incident two months earlier where sixteen kangaroos were killed in a similar event. The purpose of the ATCW has been fulfilled, and there is no need for further kangaroo culling to take place.

We have been informed that there are active ATCW permits for kangaroos on neighbouring properties to where the incident occurred. The Conservation Regulator has confirmed that no active ATCW permits were present on the properties where the massacre took place.
The region lies on the edge of state forests, where the kangaroos spend their days in the bush and come out to graze in the evenings. These areas adjacent to forests and parks must be protected as buffer zones for wildlife. These areas should see the protection of wildlife and coexistence of living, farming and conservation land uses.

Tania will be on ABC 774 radio today at 2.30 pm discussing the incident that happened in central Victoria where at least 65 kangaroos were shot and rammed with vehicles last month. However we know this number to be much higher, and the impact on the kangaroo population in the region to be extensive.

Last weekend we attended a horrific event we never want to see again. Up to 100 Kangaroos had been injured and killed through a combination of vehicle strikes and gun-shot wounds. They were scattered along roadsides and in paddocks, south of Colbinabbin. Several Kangaroos were left alive with horrific injuries, and joeys were left alive without mothers.

The Conservation Regulator attended the scene on Sunday and throughout the week, they gathered a significant amount of evidence, they are taking the matter very seriously. We also met with the Environment Minister Steve Dimopoulos on Wednesday to discuss the matter.

Heather, one of the few survivors, is receiving specialist care with Red Box Wildlife Shelter.Heather was found on a roadside with her joey, she was unable to hop properly. Sadly her terrified joey hopped away, and was never found. Her x-ray is attached, showing pellets imbedded within her.

It's going to be unpleasantly HOT for the next few days, and this will be impacting on our wildlife. Phone numbers for help, and more info below 👇 Stay safe everyone!

If you'd like to help our wildlife over the next few days here are some things you can do:
-Provide water; locate it in shade and always put a stick or floaty in so birds and other animals can get out. Try not to use metal containers that'll heat up in the sun.
-Restrict your movement through the bush; animals like kangaroos, wallabies and possums will seek shelter in the shade of treed areas, let them stay as cool as they can by not disturbing them.
-Keep an eye out; some animals will struggle in this heat, if you are unsure if they need help, call Wildlife Victoria or us, numbers below. Possums will come out of trees to the ground for water and to escape the sun. Reptiles will seek cooler areas, increasing the likelihood of interactions with people.

If you find an injured or heat stressed animal, and you cannot get onto anyone to help, if it is safe for you to do so, collect the animal, keep it in a cool dark environment and offer water in a shallow dish. Continue to try to call for help. We are all volunteers, so it can take some time to find someone close to you who is available. Please do not release the animal, it can take a few days of specialised care for animals to recover from heat stress.

Today we released this beautiful Lace Monitor back home, after she was found unresponsive in the middle of a road at Whroo.
She was seen and treated by the Wildlife Victoria vets, and a team effort of care saw her make it back home while we still have warm weather. She was very happy to be home, so we only captured a few quick pics before she was under a log, then up a tree and gone!
Lace Monitors are a threatened species, mostly due to habitat loss and fragmentation. Luckily in our region, we have a thriving population and we do what we can to help them!

After all this rain, his burrow filled up with water. We pumped it out as best as we can, but the rest is up to him, and it's dirty work!
He does have a dry pipe as a back up burrow, but it's just not the same!

Just when we thought it had stopped, we got another heavy storm yesterday afternoon! Here we are checking on neighbouring properties which were flooded. It gives you an idea of how much rain we had, and how it impacts the landscape.
Our shelter was OK but very wet!
We have had in excess of 140mm of rain in a 24 hour period.

With this wild weather please keep an eye out for our wildlife. Things we often see during this weather include waterlogged birds and possums, turtles moving about on the road, kangaroos, wombats and wallabies displaced by water or stranded.
If you see injured wildlife call Wildlife Victoria on 03 8400 7300 or us on 0497 834 033.
Stay safe out there everyone!

Four days, three birds, hit and left suffering on roadsides by the drivers. Thanks to kind people who saw these birds and stopped to help. This young cockatoo lost five of its friends on the road yesterday morning. We also have two Eastern Rosella's in care recovering from concussion as a result of vehicle strike.
If you see an injured animal, please stop, and call for help.
Cockatoo is going well in care 🥰

Patrick can walk! He may not be fast, or elegant, but he's very excited about it!
Here he has just had a roll in saw dust prior to walkies. As he gained confidence over the past two weeks he has really come out of his shell.
He still cannot get up by himself, and you can see he requires support on his lower leg.
As he gains strength, he can do new things every day. Something as simple as leaning over to drink would see him lose balance, today he can do it with a bit of concentration.
It has been a pleasure to help him recover and build confidence to be his happy cheeky self.
