Kirkwood Produce has been servicing the Hunter Valley and surrounding areas since 1921. Kirkwoods was family owned and operated.

We supply everything from pet food, produce, fertilizer, animal health and saddlery supplies. Kirkwoods have two current locations at 4 Johnson Street Rutherford, and 1 John Street Singleton. Both stores are heavily involved with community support with our major beneficiary being the Childrens Cancer Institute of Australia.

Attention, Saturday Customers.

Just reminding our Saturday customers that the traffic in our area on a Saturday is very congested. Please allow yourselves plenty of time to make it to the store before we close at 12 noon.
If you require an order over the phone for collection please have it in by 10:30am on Saturday mornings so the boys can have it ready for you when you arrive.

We really appreciate your attention to this request as Saturday mornings are very busy in store with limited staff from 8am-12 noon.

We want to make sure all of our customers get in and out of the store as quickly as possible during this busy period.

AS THE SUN SETS 🌅🌤️

A few weeks ago, we mourned the loss of not only a loyal supporter of Kirkwood Produce but a true gentleman in James (Jim) Martin of Jacaranda Farm in Gresford. Jim and Sueanne over the years like many of our customers have become more then just a delivery or a weekly visit, they have forged friendships with myself and in particular my staff.
Earlier this year we also lost another longtime friend in Ian Bird. Whilst Ian had been part of the fabric of Gresfords landscape for most of his life, Jim in his shorter tender certaininly did all he could to what I'm sure he saw as his duty to the people of Gresford for the way in which he wanted to be, perceived or maybe even received in the community. I remember being at both services, surrounded by history and portrait like beauty, sitting in the churches, stooped in memories and built with hard work and community spirit. The same spirit that was still on display today. The lawns freshly mowed, the gardens weeded and maybe a single bloom or blossom just to remind us all of the season we were in. Funny how country funerals never seem to mind a rainy day and of course the weather is always at the forefront of every conversation starter. I am always amazing at how little I knew about the people I thought I knew so much about. Ian an avid Four-Wheel driver and Jim an accomplished sailor, not to mention the rye smile I'm sure everyone found themselves sharing when we learnt what a glass half full man and infectious life of the party Jim was. To me both men were guardians of extremely high morals. They placed so much emphasis on family and community and continued to do all they could for any cause up until they no longer could find the strength.
Ian and my father Norm shared a strong bond, a common interest and a mutual respect for each other. I remember Ian more then once calling in to get a bag of dog food and ending up in dads office where they could be found solving the worlds problems over a cup of tea and a packet of Tim Tams. Mind you this never happened in my working experience with my father and I'm sure some other past employees would agree. Some may say that Norman may have mellowed, but I think dad really enjoyed Ian's company and at that stage had probably earnt the right to indulge in what could be argued as one of Australia's greatest achievements in a chocolate biscuit.
Jim and Sueanne formed a friendship with us at Kirkwood Produce firstly through Peter Pryde from Pryde's Feeds than later with extended clients along with their own needs. Jim and Sueanne were tireless in their quest for sponsorship, whether it be for Wirragulla Polo or Gresford Show, and let me say everybody who now finds themselves on a committee in charge of raising money or awareness for business, Jim and Sueanne are the best duo since Hall and Oats! Ultimate professionals in every aspect from the first time your approached to the phone call the day after the event to not only thankyou but to tell you how grateful everyone involved was, and by displaying their ultimate professionalism and asking you if you would like to commit next year. I know Sueanne won't mind me saying Jim did the talking and Sueanne did what all good women do, brought it all together. It's funny how you can be at what I'm sure we all agree a sad occasion, funerals are never really looked forward to typically not like a wedding, for one there is no open bar or four piece band, but what is on display especially in a community like Gresford is an endless amount of enthusiasm and good will. People would have been up all night cooking or making sandwiches, why do small sandwiches at a funeral taste so good? I mean four pieces of cucumber on two pieces of bread, nah, but cut it in small triangles and all of a sudden it's a delicacy. Women with aprons on, and showing impeccable timing to have all the food and urns hot for when the guest arrive. For me this is a what I take out of attending a day that should be celebrated as a life we all had the privilege of sharing in. I look around at the support that the ones left behind have not only with family but the people in this amazing village. I look at the people I've grown up with and think "S**t I'm getting old too!" But most of all I walk away with thoughts of being incredibly proud to be apart of an industry and business that has shared in so many people's lives and through countless generations.

Little nostalgic trip for you guys, here's a few photos that were given to me by Warren Eyb (Warren is the tall one on the left). I think this photo is circa 1981 taken in the back yard of our Church Street residence.
Other staff include the lovely Donna Herron and the late Robyn Forman, Peter Cavanagh, I think the younger one was Jim then David Hipwell and Graham.
The Perkins powered Leyland with a load of hay, note the sisal ropes, and our first diesel powered Bedford that Hippo drove parked on the side of the road just near the Dungog turn off on Gresford Road, note the lack of ropes!!! Hessian bags were good travellers in those days and didn't move like the plastic of today, also the truck floors were made from hard wood.
