YAY we made the cut..... but now the real battle begins.

We are in the running to receive anywhere from $500 up to $6000 depending on how many votes we get.

With our crippling bills we could really do with the $6000, while it won't clear our astronomical vet bills it will take a huge chunk out of them and help our very patient vets at Scottsdale Veterinary Services and East Coast Veterinary Clinic.

So if ALL our supporters could head here and vote for us we would really appreciate it as would the animals in our care and not forgetting our hard working team.

Head here to vote now

Snake Season is upon us. It is a timely reminder for pet owners to be careful when walking in dry grassy areas, beaches and near fresh water sources.

If you pet presents with any of these systems, you need to call your vet immediately even if you’re unsure they have been bitten, time is crucial. Sadly, dogs and cats that have been bitten can deteriorate very rapidly which can be life threatening.

We would like to try and help you reduce the risks, recognise the signs, know what to do next and to call your closest vet so that they can be prepared for when you arrive.

🚫 RECOGNISING THE SIGNS 🚫

You may not see your pet bitten by a snake; however these are some symptoms to look out for. Be aware symptoms can differ between a dog and a cat.

Cats can take from 24hrs to 48hrs to present any signs. Cats tend to wander when they are outside, you are unlikely to witness a snake bite, and may not know where, when, and what type of snake injured your cat. It can also be difficult to determine whether your cat was bitten at all as most bites are not visible and cats typically mask their injuries until they are life-threatening.

Dogs can start to show signs straight away. Dogs are more likely to encounter snakes when they are sniffing and exploring outside, especially in areas with high grasses or spots that give snakes cover such as holes, woodpiles, and rocks. If you are at your dog’s side when he is outside, you may see the interaction that occurs between your dog and the snake.

Understand that it is possible for your pet to exhibit some or all these symptoms if bitten, or even other symptoms entirely. If you suspect or know that a snake has bitten your pet, call your vet immediately. The sooner your pet receives treatment, the better their odds are of surviving the bite.

It can be a very stressful time if your pet has been bitten by a snake. The best thing for your pet is to keep calm and to call your nearest vet.

Leave the snake bite alone, try not to cover, wrap, or touch the bite. The vet and nurses will assess as soon as you reach the clinic.

If you would like any extra information, you are always welcome to call us, and we will be able to assist. 💙

Due to unforeseen circumstances, there will not be a vet available for emergencies from Saturday morning until Sunday evening.

We’ll still be available for advice but if your pet needs urgent medical attention we recommend all our clients be aware of their next closest veterinary clinic.

We are still seeing plenty of snake bites so please remain vigilant with your pets this weekend as the warm weather continues. 🐶🐱

Snakes are on the move, it’s still a bit chilly so they will probably mainly be out around their winter hideout, edges of the gardens and along the sides of the house, mid morning and afternoon. Just be aware while out gardening and enjoying the sun!!

🐈Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is common in cats. It's most likely to be seen in middle-aged to older cats, with around a third of all 'super senior' i.e.cats >15 years of age, thought to be affected.

🐈CKD is progressive and usually idiopathic (no known cause). Because cats are really good at hiding signs of the disease, up to 70% of kidney tissue can be irreversibly damaged before any obvious signs of illness show.

The kidneys are responsible for various functions within the body including:

🔹Removing waste products from the blood and excreting them in the urine
🔹Maintaining fluid balance in the body
🔹Regulation of electrolytes (blood salts)
🔹Maintaining blood pressure
🔹Producing hormones e.g.eythropoietin, which stimulates red blood cell production
🔹Regulation of acid balance in the body

Signs of CKD may be subtle at first, but can include:

🔸Weight loss
🔸Poor appetite
🔸Lethargy and reduced interaction with people
🔸Increased thirst
🔸Increased urine production
🔸House soiling/accidents outside the litter tray
🔸Anaemia
🔸Dehydration
🔸Poor unkempt coat
🔸Vomiting
🔸High blood pressure
🔸Mouth ulcers/halitosis (severe disease)

🩺Vets will usually diagnose kidney disease in cats by performing a series of blood and urine tests. Some cats will need to be hospitalised for treatment with intravenous fluids, electrolyte replacements, anti-nausea medication, supplemental nutrition and nursing care.

Although CKD can't be reversed, it can be managed through:

🐈‍⬛Increasing water intake to maintain hydration
🐈‍⬛Feeding a special palatable 'renal' diet containing restricted phosphate and restricted/good quality protein to prevent a build up of toxins in the blood. These diets may also contain beneficial B vitamins, antioxidants and essential fatty acids
🐈‍⬛Adding phosphate binders to prevent further damage to the kidneys
🐈‍⬛Managing issues related to CKD, such as anorexia, vomiting, anaemia, UTI's and hypertension.

🔍CKD is staged after diagnosis according to severity of the disease. Recommended treatments and management are recommended by following the IRIS staging system. More information can be found here:
