Thursday airway awareness 🐶

Did you know we offer BOAS surgery at AVC?

Now that it’s officially summer we’d like to promote awareness around respiratory health☀️

Brachycephalic dogs are more prone to heatstroke because their shortened airways make it harder for them to pant and cool down. This increases the risk of overheating especially in hot weather or during exercise.
Signs to look out for, excessive panting, drooling, vomiting, diarrhoea, weakness or collapse

We recommend limiting exercise in hot weather and to do walks in the early morning or late evening when it’s cooler.

Patient of the week 💫

Lily visited the clinic this week for a sedated groom. As she ages she is finding it harder to groom herself! We did a hygiene clip by clipping the hair on her stomach and around her bottom.

If your pet requires a groom, contact the clinic on 9833 9321 ☎️

Patient of the week 💫

Miley had a procedure called an Ala Vestubuloplasty completed at the clinic during the week.

Ala Vestubuloplasty also known as stenotic nares surgery or rhinoplasty, is a procedure that widens a dog’s nostrils to improve their breathing:

Procedure: A small section of each nostril is removed using a scalpel or laser. The incisions heal on their own in about a month.

Benefits: Makes breathing easier, reduces snoring, and can improve a dog’s quality of life.

Brachycephalic dogs, such as bulldogs, Boston terriers, boxers, Shih Tzus, and pugs, often need this surgery. These dogs have narrow nostrils and other anatomical features that can make it difficult to breathe.

If you feel your dog may benefit from this surgery or from BOAS surgery please contact the clinic on 9833 9321 ☎️

Fun Fact Friday 💫

Dalmatian puppies are born with pure white coats and develop their spots within 10 to 14 days of birth.

Most of their spots develop after three to four months, but they can continue to develop until they are around 18 months old.

No two Dalmatians have the same pattern.

The number, size, and pattern of spots are predetermined by genetics. Each spot is a cluster of pigmented hair.

Tips from us to you✨

It is important to understand that pets should not be allowed on balacony’s unsupervised.

Dogs should only be allowed to roam on balcony’s that are completely enclosed and cats should not be allowed on balconys more than 1 level high un-supervised as they are at risk of falling and injuring themselves even dying.

We unfortunately have seen this far too often in clinic so please pet proof your balconies‼️

Patient of the week 💫

Angus present to the clinic with abdominal pain. After investigation Angus underwent an exploratory laparotomy surgery where our team was able to remove kebab sticks.

Ex-Lao surgeries can be performed when an animal presents to the clinic and we are able to identify a foreign body through x-rays or ultrasounds, however in some cases, particularly with plant material or other objects that don’t show up on imaging studies, foreign bodies are diagnosed during surgical exploration.

If you have any concerns regarding your pet call us on 9833 9321 ☎️
