Did you know that three dogs survived the sinking of the Titanic?
Two Pomeranians were smuggled onto lifeboats under blankets by their owners, while a Pekinese was welcomed aboard lifeboat 3 with its owners Myra and Henry S. Harper
One passenger, Ann Elizabeth Isham, sadly perished after refusing to evacuate and leave her Great Dane behind.

Snake season is upon us and in Port Stephens, it's important to make sure you make your property a little less attractive to our slithering friends.
Keep pests under control and make sure any bird aviaries or chicken coops are hard to access from low down.
Snakes love a nice warm woodpile and garden rock walls with hidden holes to sleep in so be snake aware but remember, they’re an important part of the local ecology and not all are dangerous.

Constant rainy days can make it difficult to give your dog the exercise it needs.
To make sure your pup is stimulated both physically and mentally while the rain falls, try playing hide and seek inside, or hide a treat in a room for them to find.
It’s also a great time to teach some new tricks!

Today is 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗡𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗮𝘁 𝗗𝗮𝘆!
The numbat is an often-overlooked marsupial native to Australia. Numbats live in Eucalypt woodlands where they forage exclusively for termites and are one of only two strictly diurnal marsupials, which means they are active only during the day.
Sadly, the numbat is on the endangered species list with fewer than 1000 left, so it’s important to have a day like today where we give the little numbat the attention it deserves.

Cats are quite the communicators, producing more than 𝟣𝟢𝟢 𝘷𝘰𝘤𝘢𝘭 𝘴𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘴.
But it’s unusual for adult cats to meow at each other. Meows are almost exclusive for 𝘤𝘢𝘵-𝘵𝘰-𝘩𝘶𝘮𝘢𝘯 communications and those meows have developed to illicit a response from us.
Let us know if you hear a sound from your cat that seems completely out of place – they may be trying to tell you something!

The goldfish is one of the easiest pets to keep, but did you know they can live up to 10 years in captivity and an amazing 41 years in the wild?!
To best look after your goldfish, ensure its water is always clean and doesn’t fluctuate in temperature too much during a day.
And always feed it the best quality food possible so you have a happy finned friend for years to come. 😊

Port Stephens has a large population of Flying Fox bats that you may see in the skies in the early evenings.

Flying foxes get some bad press from time to time, but impressively are the largest flying mammal in Australia and they can cover up to 30 kilometres in a night foraging for food.

They play a vital role in spreading seeds and pollinating flowers of over 50 native trees. 🌸

Why do dogs love pats so much? 🐶

Aside from the fact that it feels good, dogs love pats because it’s a sign of affection from the owner which reinforces the dog's place in the household.

A pat can also stimulate playtime or signal it’s time to relax or that they’ve done a good job. The subtle scratch now and then can really make a dog’s day.

Why does your cat like playing with string? 🐈

There isn’t much that can get a cat more excited than a length of string.
Cat’s love string because it simulates hunting behaviour and triggers their motion sensitive eyesight.
And of course, a lot of cats are incredibly playful!

Why is it that dogs love to sniff everything? 🐶 Dogs possess up to 300 million receptors in their noses, compared to about six million in humans. And the part of their brain dedicated to smell is about 40 times the size of ours! A dog can smell if you are scared through the fight-or-flight hormone, adrenaline. And a simple sniff of a tree can tell them how many different types of dogs live in the area. A dog can navigate using smells and those amazing noses can even take in smells when the dog is breathing out.
