🐴☀️ Heat Stress in Horses – What You Need to Know!

With summer temperatures rising, horses are at greater risk of heat stress—a serious condition that can quickly become an emergency. The Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) helps measure heat stress in direct sunlight by factoring in temperature, humidity, wind speed, and more.

⚠️ WBGT Guidelines for Safe Riding:
🌡️ 23°C+ – Increased risk of heat stress
🌡️ 28°C+ – Caution needed, cooling mechanisms struggle
🌡️ 32°C+ – Do NOT ride, severe danger of overheating

🔹 Signs of Heat Stress:
- Heavy sweating, high heart rate (>150 BPM)
- Irritability, random kicking, head shaking
- Disorientation, incoordination
- In severe cases: collapse, convulsions, coma

🔹 What to Do If Your Horse Overheats:
- Apply ice & cold water to the neck, abdomen & large muscles
- Scrape off warm water frequently to speed cooling
- Seek veterinary help for sedation, fluids & anti-inflammatory treatment

🌞 Prevention is key! Ride early or late in the day, provide shade & plenty of water, and monitor for signs of heat stress.

Weasley the Griffon underwent his desexing procedure recently 🐾♥
Fortunately for Weasley his mum is one of our small animal Veterinarians Dr Kat! Meaning we knew he needed a bit of extra attention whilst he was undergoing his procedure.

🩺Weasley had 2 canine teeth that hadn’t fallen out so needed to be removed at time of desexing.
🩺He also had some radiographs to assess some congenital issues with his legs.
🩺He is a brachycephalic (squash faced) which can carry increased anaesthetic risk.
🩺On top of all this, he also had a testicle that hadn’t descended (cryptorchid Castrate). It is really important to desex a cryptorchid dog as a retained testicle is prone to developing cancer. Sometimes a
retained testicle can be located in the groin and sometimes like Weasley it can still be in the abdomen.

These things are relatively common issues we can face at desexing and can make a routine procedure take longer and require more planning!
We therefore always recommend a consult prior to desexing so our patients can get the best care. Weasley is recovering well at home with Dr Kat and his family 🥰🐾

Japanese encephalitis - a real risk for humans and horses too. Please monitor yourself and horses. Ensure they are vaccinated against Hendra virus as symptoms are similar to JEV!

Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) has been detected at two piggeries in southern Queensland. There have also been recent detections in New South Wales and Victoria.

JEV is a zoonotic disease spread by mosquitoes that can cause reproductive issues in pigs and neurological signs in horses, such as lack of coordination, difficulty swallowing and impaired vision.

Here is a link to information about JEV for horse owners.

🐴 Understanding Anhydrosis (Non-Sweaters, Puffers) 🏜️

Does your horse struggle to cool down in hot, humid weather?

They may have anhydrosis—a condition where horses cannot sweat normally, putting them at risk of heat stress (hyperthermia). Since they can’t release heat through sweat, they often breathe rapidly to compensate, earning them the nickname “puffers.”

🔹 Common Signs: Increased breathing rate, difficulty cooling down
🔹 Management Tips: Ensure access to fresh water, consider electrolyte supplements, and monitor for heat stress
🔹 Did You Know? The cause of anhydrosis is still unknown, and there is no definitive cure—only careful management!

🚨 Concerned about your horse? Talk to our team at Samford Valley Veterinary Hospital! Careful management is key to keeping them safe and comfortable.
