🔬 Under the Microscope 🔬
A common reason we see our patients is for sore or smelly ears. To get further information on the cause of an ear infection we will collect some of the ear discharge (yes….gross!) and put it under the microscope. Most often we see yeast or bacteria. Sometimes we see something a bit cooler! Below is a video of an ear mite found on an ear smear from a young kitten.
How cool is that!
Ear mites are easily treatable with ear drops and topical spot-on parasite products. #SamfordVillageVets #SamfordVillage
Trimming nails shouldn’t be scary! Dr Belinda walks us through how to trim your dogs’ nails 💅

Meet Jessie the Supermum!
After a few times failing to fall pregnant, Jessie’s owners had their fingers crossed when she came in for a check about a month after mating.
Dr Dan quickly confirmed the pregnancy with an ultrasound of the abdomen in the consult room in front of Jessie’s surprised owners.
We next checked in with Jessie one week before her expected due date. An xray revealed an abdomen full of puppies - Dr Dan estimated 13 puppies! It is recommended to get have an X-ray of the abdomen at the end of the pregnancy to see how many pups to expect. This will help you prepare sufficiently, help you have a better idea of if there is an issue during delivery, and consider earlier intervention if there is only one pup present. Single pups tend to have a higher rate of needing assistance during delivery.
But Supermum Jessie delivered the pups by herself with no intervention at all.
She delivered one stillborn pup but the remaining pups were born healthy and have thrived since birth. We are eagerly looking forward to seeing the puppies for their six week check over, vaccination and microchip very shortly!
If your dog or cat is having their first litter, or you’ve been breeding for years - we are here to help you deliver happy, healthy pups and kittens. We have in-house progesterone testing for timing of mating, ultrasound for pregnancy diagnosis and foetal monitoring, and X-ray for counting those babies!
Just another day doing what we love 🤩 Here’s a look into what goes on at Samford Village Vet 🩺💉
Royce presented to Dr Dan at Samford Village Vets on Station Street as an emergency. He was collapsed and paralysed to the point that he couldn’t even blink. Thankfully his respiratory muscles were only mildly affected and he was still breathing on his own. His family acted quickly getting him to us once they realised he was unwell. Blood tests were run in the clinic and we were highly suspicious of a snake bite. We confirmed with a envenomation detection kit on his urine and immediately started treatment with the appropriate snake antivenom for a brown snake bite. Royce was amazing and never gave up the fight. After 3 days in hospital, 2 vials of antivenom, countless hours of exceptional nursing care from our team, and support from his whole family, including cousins ( this is one LOVED doggo), Royce was able to go home. It was still a number of days of home nursing care with his family before he made a full recovery. It was incredible watching him get his mojo back and start wagging that once paralysed tail to show his beautiful, happy little personality. I just love him ❤️🐾 #SamfordVillageVets #SamfordVillage
