We provide an after hours EMERGENCY service, for true, dinky di, emergencies.

Things that are NOT an emergency, esp at 2 am:
1. I just want to have a chat about my animal, do you have time?
2. My cat has just passed away, can you tell me how old it is?
3. My dog is acting weird and eating grass, why? No I don't want to bring it in, I will just watch him.
4. My dog is sick, do you think it can wait until tomorrow? No I don't want to pay to bring it in now? What do you think is wrong with it?
5. There is a bird standing on one leg, you need to come and catch it.
6. My dogs eye is still sore, even though you gave me advice 2 hours ago, and no I still do not want you to see it
7. No other vets will give me free advice, my dog is vomiting, what can I give it?
8. How much is the after hours fee? You are kidding, the cat is not worth that much.

These are all true conversations that Dr Bec has had in the last 48 hours on call, and yes, quite a few were between 11.30pm and 3am. We currently have 2 vets who are handling all the after hours for our district, we are even starting to get calls from Mackay. When our vets are on call, they still have to work their normal shifts for the week. Due to staff shortages, there is just no other option. We are at the point where we are considering moving to a triage service, where you will talk to someone who is not local, and you will have to pay for that. We need to look after our vets, and ensure that they are not going to burn out.
Please be considerate.
If you have a true emergency and want to be seen, please ring us, we are only to happy to help out.

What has your dog eaten that it shouldn't have? 🦮🤭

On Tuesday you'll hear what happened to this local pooch after swallowing multiple lead fishing sinkers. 🎣

You can share your stories on air too - find us on 101.1FM or on the ABC listen app and choose Tropical North. 👇

What breed of dog would consider these sinkers to be tasty morsels??? We had to go to surgery to remove 1 sinker from her stomach, and the other three from her intestines. Thats 1/2kg that was rolling around in her GI tract. No wonder she was feeling a bit sad…..

Lets talk about lepto 🐀

We're now getting dogs that haven't been able to get their lepto vaccine for the second year in a row, due to the vaccine shortage. It is therefore more important than ever to discuss signs to look for to provide early intervention, and things you can do at home to reduce the risk of lepto to your dog.

What is lepto?
- lepto is a bacterial infection that is transmitted by rats and mice through their urine. The bacteria loves wet conditions and can survive for some time in water or mud
- it is a very serious disease and is often deadly
- humans can also be infected with lepto

Symptoms
- jaundice (yellowing of the gums, eyes, etc)
- lethargy
- loss of appetite
- vomiting and diarrhoea
- increased thirst and urination

How to reduce the risk:
- refresh water bowls daily
- contol rats and mice (baits, traps etc). Make sure all food sources, eg chook food is in a sealed container
- don't let your dogs drink out of stagnant puddles

Please call the clinic on 49561897 if you have any questions, or if you are concerned about your dog.
