We are reposting another ‘Safety Around Horses’ on our page due to an incident reported on the Wingerworth village FB page.

We would also like to mention that, not only is it the responsibility of the car driver to manoeuvre safely, but it is also the responsibility of the horse rider to also ensure that they contribute in helping motorists to pass safely and being alert to the dangers around them.

Here are a few tips for drivers passing horses.

Slow down to a maximum of 10mph and be ready to stop
Be patient – DO NOT sound your horn or rev your engine
Watch out for signals from the rider to slow down or stop
Pass the horse wide and slow, allowing at least a car’s width if possible
Accelerate gently once you’ve passed the horse

Additional tips for cyclists passing horses.

Horses have a blind spot directly behind them and therefore cyclists should slow down and alert riders to their presence by calling out and asking if it is safe to pass
Whether passing from the front or back, please slow down and pass wide when safe to do so.

Additional tips for bikers passing horses.

Motorbikes can seem to appear from nowhere, are often noisy and can alarm horses if they approach from behind due to the horse’s blind spot. This means horses sometimes react to them more than other vehicles.
Please slow down, and keep your engine as quiet as possible as you pass.
Please be prepared to stop and turn your engine off.

Please remember that
Many horse riders are children or teenagers
Horse riders sometimes ride in double file to protect novice riders or nervous horses
Horses can be easily spooked, frightened, and can occasionally panic in traffic
Riders will generally smile, nod or thank drivers with a wave.

Thank you.

Did you know Spirit recently turned 29?
The horse that inspired the character Spirit in the film is a living horse who is currently 29 years old. DreamWorks selected Spirit as a young c**t when he was merely a foal. He was born to a stallion and mare that were captured by the Bureau of Land Management in Oregon. Spirit exemplifies the Kiger mustang breed, characterized by his striking features, including wide-set eyes and a thick, wavy mane and tail of multiple colors, which influenced the animated portrayal that continues to enchant audiences today.

In reality, Spirit embodies the mission of his animated counterpart by advocating for the conservation of wild horses and their natural environments. He resides at a sanctuary where he not only enjoys interactions with humans but also acts as a prominent ambassador for wild horses, motivating young individuals globally to understand the significance of America's mustangs and the necessity of freedom and protection for all equines. Spirit lives at the Return to Freedom sanctuary in Santa Barbara County, where he roams across 300 acres of unspoiled California pasture. Although he was raised among humans from an early age, those who know him well remark on his spirited nature, which is reminiscent of his animated persona.

He plays an essential role in the sanctuary by educating the public about his breed and advocating for the safeguarding of America’s wild horses. As a well-known figure, Spirit attracts numerous visitors to the sanctuary. Through these encounters, he effectively communicates the urgent message regarding the current situation of the nation’s wild horses and how individuals can assist in their preservation. At 29 years old, Spirit relishes his time at the sanctuary, socializing with fellow horses and receiving care from his dedicated human caretakers. Despite being born in captivity, he embodies the free-spirited essence of the wild west. Thanks to "Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron," his legacy will continue to inspire a commitment to the pursuit of freedom.

A full round up of rule changes and remits will be available soon, but one rule change that is attracting a lot of attention both here and abroad is about nosebands'...
Nosebands No Longer Compulsory in Dressage in NZL National Competition
The recent ESNZ Dressage Conference (New Zealand) passed a rule change that nosebands are now optional in all levels of national competition.
A remit put to the Planning Forum in April 2024 proposed this change based on fairness to the horse, and rider choice. It was moved a rule change be considered at the Annual July Conference where it was passed by a 26-2 vote majority. It was agreed that in times of considerable public scrutiny of gear used by dressage riders, that to make a noseband optional was a step to demonstrate willingness to change years of tradition in dressage sport – back to the future when nosebands were not the norm.
The change became two pronged. The decision to not to wear a noseband was perceived to be fairer to the horse in the opinion of some, and this is undoubtedly true depending on the type of noseband used, it’s tightness, the correct training of the horse and the ability of the athlete. It is the tight / wide / poorly fitted noseband that has created much public debate and rightly so. We have all seen it at some point. This is about equine wellbeing and social license.
This rule change also gives athletes a choice – they can choose not to wear a noseband either because they believe it is better for their horse’s comfort, or they prefer the visual look of their horse’s face without a noseband.
Either way - it is immaterial – the decision is with the athlete. It is inclusive approach allowing athletes to make what they think is best noseband decision for them and their equine partner.

This old horse, the Rancher said,
She’s seen some better days,
She’s eating up my profits
And costs a lot for hay.

Another horse would suit me
A stronger one at that
She’s seen a lot of miles
Like my cowboy hat.

This old horse, the Rancher said,
She helped me herd my steer
I’m pretty sure she’s magic
I know I hold her dear.

Another horse would suit me
One that can run fast
Maybe one that’s younger
Or maybe one that lasts.

This old horse, the Rancher said,
She’s long and far in tooth
My children do remember
Her fondly from their youth.

Another horse would suit me
A gelding in its prime
One that needs less fixing
That helps me save a dime!

Why, they ask, then keep her?
Why not trade her now?
Bring her to an auction,
Replace her with a cow?

The Rancher’s brow grew heavy
He took a staggered step
His eyes did show his friendship
In wrinkles, as they crept.

His breath, he took in deeply
As he poised to say his words
It’s as if the earth grew silent,
That his message could be heard.

This old horse, the Rancher said
Has given me her life.
I would not trade for anything
Nor either would my wife.

Another horse would suit me,
And perhaps someday will come,
But this old gal, I love her,
She is the chosen one.

The old horse, the Rancher said
Her services she did lend
Her and I have seen the years
This old horse, she is my friend.

Another horse would suit me well
And younger days for me
And I will keep my promise,
Until our last breath sets us free.

Is there anyone Interested in doing this ??
This will be in Sawyers Valley at Hilborne
I have a working eq coach happy to come to mine for an "Intro into Working Equitation" workshop...... if I can get at least 6 paying people, she charges $150 per person for a day 9am to 4pm ish. I think an Intro workshop will be good, we would be more likely to get newbies coming than current members of WEq clubs. Let me know if you think you have others in mind, and we will chat next week to see if it's feasible.
