We have a few days left of FREE ACTH ( Cushings Disease) testing available if you think your horse has some symptoms please call the clinic and arrange an appointment - Ph: 02 65451522

FREE ACTH TESTING FOR THE MONTH OF APRIL

Horses which are suffering from PPID (Equine Cushings Disease) can show a wide range of clinical signs, all of which are caused by the abnormally high circulating levels of the hormone cortisol.

Laminitis is a common sign. Another clinical sign associated with PPID is the development of an abnormal hair coat, ranging from mild changes in coat shedding right through to a full, long, curly, overgrown coat (“hirsuitism”).

Horses and ponies with PPID may also develop abnormal fat distribution – including abnormal fat bulging above the eyes (“supraorbital fat”) and a pot belly.

Other “classic” indicators of PPID include:

*Excessive sweating

* Increased appetite

*Increased drinking and urination

*Lethargy / poor performance

* Repeating episodes of laminitis

* Recurring infections (eg: sinusitis)

*Loss of muscle condition, and/or a pot bellied appearance

Please give us a call if you would like to arrange testing on 02 65451522
We only have limited number of vouchers left so please give us a call if you are interested

In light of the recent confirmed Hendra Virus case in Murwillumba,NSW now is a great time to check your horses vaccination status, or consider vaccinating your horses against Hendra Virus if you haven't already done so.

Vaccinating your horse is the most effective way to prevent the fatal Hendra Virus, we strongly advise all of our clients to have their horse vaccinated.

Hendra Virus is transmitted by bats to horses, which can in turn transmit the fatal virus to humans. Hendra Virus presents in many different ways, but some of the most common symptoms can include:
- Fever
- Difficulty breathing
- Lethargy/ dullness
- Abnormal gait

NITRATE POISONING WARNING FOR HUNTER LIVESTOCK PRODUCERS

After significant rainfall across much of the Hunter and Manning Great Lakes, pasture recovery is posing some challenges for livestock owners.

There have been a number of confirmed cases of Nitrate Poisoning and kikuyu Poisoning in our region in recent days.

The wet and humid conditions have proved ideal for the common pasture w**d Purslane, also known as Pigw**d. This w**d is known to contain nitrates and oxillates and although generally not considered highly toxic it can cause scouring or even death where stock consume a large amount.

There has been a proliferation of the w**d in many paddocks, and this week it has led to nitrate poisoning in stock in the Lower Hunter, where Purslane was the dominant cover in the paddock.

District Vet Jim Kerr said producers need to watch their stock closely during this period, as pasture recovers.

“With such wonderful rainfall there can unfortunately be downsides for livestock owners, associated with the rapidly growing young pasture,” said Dr Kerr.

“We’re encouraging landholders where possible to maintain their feeding regimes, including introducing silage or roughage bales in Purslane or kikuyu dominant paddocks."

Kikuyu poisoning can unfortunately occur when kikuyu grows quickly after a prolonged dry spell. It has a high mortality rate. Producers can reduce the risk to stock by removing them from kikuyu dominant pastures or adding a bale of silage or roughage to the paddock as an alternate feed source. Generally the risk to livestock subsides after three-four weeks.

Dr Kerr is reminding producers Hunter Local Land Services is offering free feed testing for local producers.

“We did see numerous nitrate deaths from hay and silage during this drought from feed harvested under stress or purchased from outside sources without necessary testing,” said Dr Kerr.

“We continue to offer this service to ensure local producers have confidence in the feed their stock are accessing.

“If you have concerns about the feed or nutrition requirements of your stock, please contact Hunter Local Land Services on 1300 795 299, to speak to your local team.”
