Summer is here and with the beautiful sunshine, clear skies and warm days there are some things to be aware of when it comes to our pets.
🐾Make sure your pet has lots of shade and fresh cool water available at all times. If they can't be inside, it is important to check regularly that their water bowls are not in direct sunlight and the water is not warm/hot. Shade is very important. Frozen water bottles wrapped in a light towel are great for small animal enclosures. Misting sprays or paddle pools are also an idea to provide cooling. Be aware of artificial grass or paved areas as they can reach very high temperatures.
🐾Don't walk your dog during hot times of the day. It is recommended not to walk when temperatures are above 20-25 degrees and always check the ground with your own hand before you let your dog step on the sand, cement or road as they can burn their paws. Early morning or later in the evening are great times to head out.
🐾 Don't leave pets unattended in vehicles.
🐾 If your dog likes to sunbathe, consider using a pet sunscreen to protect their skin if they are spending time outdoors.
🐾 If using fans around birds make sure the air is not blowing directly at them. If your bird is a free flyer, turn off ceiling fans!
🐾 Be aware of the signs of heatstroke or heat exhaustion: panting, drooling/salivating, changes in gum colour (very red or pale), increased heart or breathing rate, vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargic or disoriented etc.
🐾 With the warmer weather comes more bbqs and eating outdoors. Watch for burns from cooking, eating inappropriate or dangerous foods, skewers, mozzie repellants/candles etc.
🐾 Some breeds or species are more prone to heat problems. If you own a brachycephalic dog or cat, a very furry pet or a small animal (rabbit or guinea pig) extra precautions are needed to keep them cool and healthy.
Enjoy the sunshine but be safe!
So I'm sure it has been a burning question for you all.... does a frog shed their skin? The answer is YES and they also eat it as they go 🤢🤣 Here is our girl Naveen demonstrating this evening! You're welcome 🤣🤣🤣
