We had some beautiful Haflinger girls come to the clinic for their routine pregnancy scans🐴💛

These gorgeous horses aren’t just known for their sturdy builds, but for their big, bold personalities too - and they certainly lived up to the hype!

Keeping them happy and relaxed while in the crush, we have the girls favourite treats - lick-it’s - the only problem is sharing 😁😛

It’s always a joy to work with such gentle giants who make our day brighter ☀️🌟 we love these girls.

Often foals are born with contracted tendons, traditionally these have been treated with splints or casts - but these can cause rubs and often require the mare and foal to be boxed.

👠The Red Boot can be used instead of casts or splints for shorter periods of time, reducing the chance of sores and mum and bub can stay outside in a small yard.

👠 At SEC we now have a Red Boot for fetlocks and a Red Boot for knees….we’ve already had some fantastic results as you can see in these images 📸

👠 These photos show a foal on Day 1 and Day 3 after 2 x six hour periods wearing the red boot.
We saw incredible improvement in just 2 days!

This little foal came in today for some follow-up care and is feeling fabulous, thanks to the magic touch of Dr. Caitlin. 🩺💖

We might need a microscope to see all that cuteness!

But don’t be fooled by the small size - this little one’s got a HUGE spirit.

At Pony Club, our horses participate in various activities, and it's essential to consider their well-being. As responsible owners, we need to be mindful of how much work is suitable for our horses. Researchers have studied the ideal weight-carrying capacity of horses to help us make informed decisions.

As outlined in Pony Club Australia's horse welfare policy, the combined weight of the rider and saddlery should not exceed 20% of the horse’s weight. For example, a 13.2hh pony weighing 400kg should not carry a rider weighing more than 80kg with gear.

A horse that can easily carry weight usually has a well-muscled, short back and thick cannon bones. This horse will have a lower centre of gravity compared to a horse with long legs and a long, weak back. Always consider your horse's build and adjust their fitness plans accordingly.

𝘍𝘪𝘵𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴 & 𝘉𝘢𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦
The fitness and balance of both horse and rider are crucial. An unfit or unbalanced horse will struggle to support the rider’s weight while maintaining its own balance. Similarly, an unfit rider—or one that is too tall for the horse or pony—can throw off the horse’s balance, leading to discomfort and potential injury. Ensuring both horse and rider are in good condition is essential for a safe and enjoyable ride.

𝘋𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 & 𝘐𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘬
Activities over rough terrain, for longer durations, and at increased speeds demand more effort from the horse. Only attempt such activities if both horse and rider are fit enough to handle the increased physical demands.

𝘌𝘲𝘶𝘪𝘱𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 & 𝘏𝘰𝘰𝘧 𝘊𝘢𝘳𝘦
Always ensure your equipment meets the needs of the activity. A properly fitting saddle distributes the rider’s weight evenly without causing muscle soreness. Regular hoof care is also vital; hooves should be trimmed to provide a balanced, flat surface for weight-bearing. For horses that wear down their hooves quickly or have thin soles, consider using shoes or protective boots based on professional advice from a farrier or veterinarian.

Understanding your horse’s weight and the maximum weight it can carry ensures their welfare and promotes a long, healthy partnership. A recent study published in the EVJ has found that 86% of blood samples submitted to identify Granulosa Cell Tumours in mares displaying “bad behaviour” had no elevations of hormones associated with the tumours.

This is a fun post to highlight an important issue. Veterinary medicine has a huge staff retention issue, and a su***de rate nearly 4 times higher than the national average. Sophies Legacy has set up the “We’re Only Human” campaign which asks pet and animal owners to make the promise to be kind and respectful and to understand the massive pressures impacting veterinary staff.
This post serves as a reminder that we all started from the same place, we were all just little girls who loved their ponies.

🏥🩺🩻CASE🩻🩺🏥

This warmblood presented to Dr Claire as an afterhours emergency.

He had been noticed to be depressed, not eating and drooling.

On examination, it was found that he had nearly completely lacerated his tongue!
Luckily for this chap, there was a small part of tongue that was still attached to adequate blood supply, so Dr Claire admitted him to Seymour Equine Clinic where she sutured the detached tongue back together.

After a tough week of soft feeding and diligent aftercare by his owner, he started to feel a bit better. His tongue now has a little divot on the left side but as you can see from the last picture, it is still attached and fully functional.

We don’t see many tongue injuries but it’s usually caused by horses playing with wire fencing or gates. A fully functional tongue is essential for drinking!

THE 24 BEHAVIOURS OF THE RIDDEN HORSE IN PAIN

▪️We all know the obvious signs of pain in horses but there are other pain signs that are sometimes overlooked, especially in horses who aren’t performing as expected.

▪️If you’re having any difficulties with your horse, have you ask yourself if it is in pain?

▪️Have a look at the images attached to see if you can identify any of these in your horse when it’s ridden.

▪️If you’re struggling with riding, or your horse is behaving badly, a vet assessment can be beneficial to identify any possible sources of pain, or to pick up on early indicators before they become more problematic .

🏥🩺🩻Case🩻🩺🏥

📝 A standardbred gelding was found at his morning feed time non weight bearing lame in his left fore.
His diligent owner noticed it didn’t look like a standard foot abscess so contacted the emergency vet.
👩‍⚕️On arrival he was toe touching lame with what appeared to be a nail or some wire sticking out of his frog.
🩻 Xray’s were obtained with the nail in place to be able to see how deep it penetrated.
After consultation with a surgeon he was deemed to be the luckiest horse alive 🍀 having just missed any important structures by a few millimeters!
The nail was removed, the frog pared back and poulticed for the following week.
💊 He also received antibiotics and bute.

💚 A few weeks later and he is cantering around the paddock as if nothing happened 🐎!

❗️There are so many important structures within the foot and penetrating injuries often can result in damage to the coffin joint, navicular bursa, pedal bone and tendon and tendon sheath, which can all be life threatening.

🤔 Important take homes from this case for owners are to call a vet ASAP if you see something penetrating your horses sole and do not pull the foreign object out until it has been x-rayed!

⁉️Did you know⁉️

🪱 The vast majority of horses are classified as “low egg shedders” and therefore only need to be dewormed once a year.
🪱 Performing a faecal egg count (FEC) test allows your horse to be classified as a low, moderate or high shedder and determines how often they require deworming.
🪱 This not only helps with tackling anthelmintic resistance but can also save on the cost of dewormers.

🏥🩺🩻 CASE 🩻🩺🏥

A Thoroughbred gelding was presented after the owner noticed he was struggling to eat and hypersalivating. He was sedated and a dental gag placed which showed a very thick, painful tongue right at the back of his mouth.
Radiographs were taken that showed a metallic foreign body embedded in the tongue itself.

The horse was referred to the Bendigo Equine Hospital who worked their magic to remove the wire under a general anesthetic.
Even though it sounds simple, it can be a very tough and frustrating surgery to try and remove the wire.

He went home the same day and has not skipped a beat since!
From time to time we see this in horses and thanks to his diligent owners, the wire could be removed before doing too much damage in the area.
