Keeping your horse cool and comfortable is crucial on hot summer days!
Ensure they have access to shade throughout the day, offer plenty of fresh water and during the hottest part of the day, limit strenuous activity and opt for gentle exercise in the cooler mornings or evenings.

☀️☀️Recognising Heat Stress☀️☀️

MONITORING VITAL SIGNS

🌡️ Temperature: A temperature above 38.5°C can indicate potential heat stress.
❤️ Heart Rate: Increased heart rate, especially when not exercising, can be a sign of heat stress.
💨 Respiratory Rate: Rapid, shallow breathing often with flared nostrils is another indicator of heat stress.

Observing Physical Signs:

💦 Excessive Sweating: While sweating is a normal cooling mechanism, excessive sweating can lead to dehydration and electrolyte imbalances.
🥱 Lethargy: Horses suffering from heat stress may appear lethargic, depressed, and reluctant to move.
💪 Muscle Tremors: In severe cases, heat stress can cause muscle tremors and incoordination.

Recognising Behavioral Changes:

🌾 Reduced Appetite: Loss of appetite is a common symptom of heat stress in horses.
🤬 Aggression: Some horses may become irritable or aggressive when experiencing heat stress.
🥴 Stumbling or staggering: Neurological signs such as stumbling or staggering may indicate heatstroke, a serious and potentially fatal condition.

HYDRATING

💧Electrolytes help horses stay healthy in the heat and can be given as oral paste or mixed into feed or water.
💧 Adding some table salt to their feed can also encourage water intake.
💧 Use caution when adding electrolytes to water, as some horses may dislike the taste and stop drinking.
💧 Always provide plain water alongside electrolyte-mixed water to ensure proper hydration.

COOLING

💧Applying a continuous stream of cool, not cold, water directly to horses lowers body temperature, with or without scraping.
💧Leaving water on between applications cools horses more effectively.
💧Constant water contact works better than sweat evaporation for heat removal.

🔥 During high fire risk days it is also good practice to remove all synthetic material off your livestock ie: fly masks, synthetic rugs and nylon head-collars.

As always, please call us if you have any concerns

🐴✨ Exciting Foal Arrival Alert! ✨🐴

We are happy to announce the safe arrival of this beautiful foal from one of our clients, Leigh! 💖

A beautiful legacy for sire Heavenly Saint, who lives on through this stunning little girl 🌟

Here’s what Leigh had to say about the foal:
"Hi Gang, very please to welcome our filly RUMANI. She's not jet black, but rather matte black with white roaning throughout and possibly faint large black spots. We believe she will color out to a near leopard! AAA Heavenly Saint X AAA Ironhorse Tiger Rose.
We appreciate the help getting Rose preggers.’

💫 This is a perfect example of how frozen AI can help preserve the genetics of beloved stallions — even after they’ve passed. 🐎
A huge congratulations to Leigh for trusting us with such an important task, and thank you for the beautiful photos of Rose and her foal. 🍼🐴

👉 If you’re into spots: Leigh Mannix has Heavenly Saint’s semen available for purchase.

If you’re looking to breed this year with your mare get in touch with us today! We have several breeding options and contracts available to suit all needs.

Breeding services available:
- AI for fresh, chilled or frozen
- Embryo Transfers
- Stallion Collection for fresh, chilled or frozen

🎉THIS IS NOT YOUR AVERAGE PREGNANCY🎉

🧫 Exciting news from our clinic! A few weeks ago, we completed our first embryo flush, and we’re thrilled to confirm that our recipient mare, Chrissy, is now positively pregnant.

🧫 Embryo transfer is an excellent option for breeding a foal while allowing your mare to stay in work or for those mares that may have trouble carrying a pregnancy to term.

🧫 This season, we are offering embryo transfer services for the first time, and we can also provide recipient mares if needed. If you’d like more information, feel free to reach out for an info sheet or give us a call to chat.

💅🏽✨Spa day vibes at SEC✨💅🏽

Our lovely girl Tess, is living her best life after indulging in a lux spa treatment (aka rolling in the biggest puddle she could find).

• She chose the volcanic mud wrap💅✨

Handcrafted by nature herself, this rich, mineral-infused mud promises to detoxify, rejuvenate, and add that perfect touch of rustic glamour. One half of her body now radiates with earthy elegance, while the other… well, she’s saving that for the sequel! 😂

Breed: Haflinger

We had some beautiful Haflinger girls come to the clinic for their routine pregnancy scans🐴💛

These gorgeous horses aren’t just known for their sturdy builds, but for their big, bold personalities too - and they certainly lived up to the hype!

Keeping them happy and relaxed while in the crush, we have the girls favourite treats - lick-it’s - the only problem is sharing 😁😛

It’s always a joy to work with such gentle giants who make our day brighter ☀️🌟 we love these girls.

Preventative care is key to keeping all horses healthy and happy 💛🧡🫶 thanks Dr Caitlin!!

Today is R U OK? Day, a reminder for us all to check in on our friends, family, and colleagues. A simple conversation can make a world of difference. From all the team at Seymour Equine Clinic, let's take the time to ask, listen, and support each other 💛💛💛

R U OK?Day is a reminder to start a conversation ANY day it's needed.

Often foals are born with contracted tendons, traditionally these have been treated with splints or casts - but these can cause rubs and often require the mare and foal to be boxed.

👠The Red Boot can be used instead of casts or splints for shorter periods of time, reducing the chance of sores and mum and bub can stay outside in a small yard.

👠 At SEC we now have a Red Boot for fetlocks and a Red Boot for knees….we’ve already had some fantastic results as you can see in these images 📸

👠 These photos show a foal on Day 1 and Day 3 after 2 x six hour periods wearing the red boot.
We saw incredible improvement in just 2 days!

👠 If you have any questions or have a foal with similar issues, please contact the clinic for more information

🐴✨ Big hearts come in tiny packages, like Midget!

This little foal came in today for some follow-up care and is feeling fabulous, thanks to the magic touch of Dr. Caitlin. 🩺💖

We might need a microscope to see all that cuteness!

But don’t be fooled by the small size - this little one’s got a HUGE spirit.

Here’s to speedy recoveries and more adorable visits please Emma Ondrus 😀😉
