Ever heard nasty stories about throwing sticks for dogs? Albeit, uncommon, stick injuries do occur and can be devastating.
This dog presented to us after a stick became lodged in the oral and palatal tissue, narrowly avoiding vital vessels and nerves. Dr Michael anaesthetised the dog to assess the damage and remove the stick (as shown).
This was a very mild example of what can happen when a stick perforates oral tissues. In some circumstances sticks can perforate the oesophagus, trachea, and large blood vessels, unfortunately with fatal circumstances. A timely reminder to always be very mindful and cautious when encouraging dogs to play with sticks.

In fear of boring you with too many cute puppies ( 😂 ) we had yet another Caesarian surgery this afternoon.
Willow now has 6 healthy pups and a much more manageable belly…
Here they are in the humidicrib while Mum is being put back together next door.
