🐎 Further education of horses undersaddle. Henry, 10yr old warmblood gelding.

A very important part of Henry's stay has been ensuring his handler/rider is able to complete the new exercises and have a good understanding of the changes in Henry's feel undersaddle and on the ground.

Photos from the first lesson with his handler/rider as part of Henry stay with us. His handler/rider reported feeling much more in control and that he wasn't heavy in her hands. They will continue to have some more lessons before Henry heads home.

Tilly's first stay with us is concluding (her education of starting under saddle is being broken up into multiple parts to suite her learning, personaility and maturity) - finishing with a relaxed horse traverling forward out and about. Tilly will return after a break where she is given the opportunity to process her learnings.

🐎 Further education of horses undersaddle. Henry, 10yr old warmblood gelding.

Henry is with us to be brought back into work along with addressing a few training gaps identifed so that his youth rider can continue to develop her riding with him. A key focus in his first week has been follow the nose/bend exercise - this is important to assist with softness and allow his rider to have a soft one rein stop if needed.

Ken is an eye catching type and has been with us for weaning and early handling education. Through groundwork, desentization and short regular sessions his confidence has grown and his trainability shown through. His a sensitive type but with a willingness to learn makes him soft on the lead/lunge ect at such an early age.

❓️ How long will my horse need to stay to be started undersaddle?

A very common question - and the short answer is "every horse is different"

There are so many contributing factors to how long a horse needs to stay for their starting undersaddle education these include but are not limited to:
◾️Horses breed/age and handling skills.
◾️The experience and skill set of the owner/rider the horse is returning too.
◾️The horses personality, ability to process and settle into a new environment.
◾️Any issues along the way, such as soreness, dental needs ect.

We work with each horse at the speed they need, we strongly believe that this means each horse is given the opportunity to become confident in a ridden career. Some horses also benifit from multiple short stays - we have seen this be very successful for many horses allowing for periods of rest physically and to process their learnings.

📸 Video of a lovely pony who was with us to be started in a ridden career - this video is week 3 before heading home week 4. This pony came with wonderful handling and life skills, had been professionally long reined and was going home to a very capable rider/handler therefore meaning his stay was shorter then most.

No horse is the same and we can not work to a one box fits all approach.

🐎 Starting horses under saddle - Tilly (4yr old mare Paint Bred)

Tilly has had extensive experience showing in hand obtaining Register of Merit in Lunge Line, Hunter in Hand, Halter and Led Trail.

Tilly is at Hilltop Horsemanship to be started undersaddle with a long term goal for her owner to compete in Ranch Classes. Tilly will be started/educated over multiple short stay visits to allow her to mentally process her learnings - and approach her owner has committed to.

This stay has been focusing on introducing a rider, riding gear and encouraging a soft, kind and willing forward. With her established commands on the lunge it has been important to transition these learnings to her ridden training.

Pip has been with us to be weaned and handled before returning home to her owner. An exceptional type with an eagerness to engage with her handler. Pip has been exposed to groundwork (disengage hind, lunge, flexion, back up and desentization) preparing her to now be able to complete task such as tie up, feet handling and rugging.

Our approach to weanlings is always establishing groundwork skills before session such as tie up to ensure there is a clear understanding of pressure and release. We also keep each session short, often doing multiple short sessions a day to ensure positive learning and time to process.

🐎⭐️ Hilltop Horsemanship's facilities allow for safe handling of young weanlings/yearlings with secure metal yards. All enquires welcome. ⭐️🐎

This filly arrived in transition to her new home to spend some time building confidence and basic life skills. She had only had minimal handling upon her arrival. She is a kind mare who has tried in every session to process her learnings and every sessions improves in her understanding of pressure/release, desentization and life skills such as handling of feet.

The video below displays some short snippets of what she is upto - although alert/aware at times she remains soft and engaged with her handler.

Building confidence for horse and rider (in this case the horse) is our key focus.

Jax Spent time at Hilltop Horsemanship for further education under saddle earlier this year. A big focus was on finding a better and more willing forward, especially in the canter.

Since his return home his owner has been committed to continuing thier learnings with us, including lessons to ensure they are both "staying on track"
