‼️🐓⚠️ Avian Influenza

There has been an outbreak of avian influenza at two chicken farms near Euroa, the strain is H7N8 and it is confirmed to be a highly pathogenic strain. Avian influenza can affect all birds, however chickens and pet parrots are particularly susceptible. It is generally spread by wild birds (especially waterfowl like ducks) either through close contact or their faeces. The risk of catching it off your bird is low but possible, so if you see any of the below signs in your birds and need to move or transport them, wear gloves and a mask where
possible and practice good hand hygiene.

⭐️Signs to look for:
Sudden unexplained deaths
Neurological signs (head drooping, seizures, wobbly gait)
Excessive sneezing, nasal discharge, trouble breathing
Diarrhoea
Reduced egg production

⭐️What you can do:
All pet birds should be moved inside
Minimise contact between wild birds and chickens
Practice good hygiene when cleaning and collecting eggs, washing hands and shoes before and after going into the coop
Quarantine all new chickens and pet birds for 4 weeks in a separate cage/quarantine area where they can’t have any contact with your other birds

Report any cases of unexplained bird deaths to the 24-hour Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888 or to your local vet

If you are coming to the clinic from a high risk area for a check-up for your bird or testing please notify staff before so we can make the preparations to
limit any possible spread

If you have any concerns and want your bird checked up, please contact us. We are very fortunate to have our amazing locum, Dr Daniel, here with us for the next couple of weeks. Daniel has a special interest in avian and exotic medicine and has has undertaken further study in avian medicine and surgery. He is looking forward to seeing any exotic feathered, furred or scaly patients. 🐓🐍🐰🐹

🚨 Attention Dog Owners: Watch Out for Grass Seeds! 🚨

🐾Meet Annie. Annie came in last week due to coughing.
After a scope it was discovered Annie had a grass seed lodged in her tonsils🐾

We’re seeing more cases of grass seeds causing issues for dogs, especially around this time of year. These tiny, pointed seeds can get lodged in your dog’s throat, nose, ears, and paws – and they can be tricky to spot and remove.

Here’s what to watch for:
✅ Frequent coughing or gagging
✅ Pawing at their mouth or head
✅ Drooling more than usual
✅ Acting uncomfortable or restless

If you suspect your dog has a grass seed lodged in their throat, it’s best not to attempt removal yourself – it can be dangerous! Bring them in so we can safely assess and help your furry friend get back to feeling their best.

Keep your pups safe and be vigilant about checking them after outdoor play.
