We are teaming up with the Paterson Allyn Williams Science and Ideas Hub, the Dungog Wholefood Co-op and other local producers to hold an event at the James Theatre focused on soils and healthy soil microbiology.

It will be an interactive afternoon where we encourage you to bring a soil sample from your farm or garden to have a look at under the microscope.

See microbes, fungi, critters, soil particles & the other bits on the big screen.
How healthy is it?

Hear from Soil scientist Ernie Harbott and Compost specialist Virginia Brunton about the complex & fascinating relationships & battles in soils that make our food grow. And find out ways that we can improve productivity in our landscape and grow healthier more nutrient rich food.

Technical info + demonstrations + fun stuff for: growers, gardeners & families. Great way for kids to learn about food systems and the worlds that science opens up.

Australian farmers are finding ways to regenerate the land without chemicals, but not everyone is on board with how the trend is being labelled.

Sometimes there’s a perception from croppers and graziers that they ‘can’t afford’ to switch to regenerative farming practices.

But the hard yards have been done for you by early adopters - so now change can happen more easily and faster than before thanks to active regen networks of onground practitioners.

I’ve been lucky enough to hang out with awesome blokes like Martin Williams Nyngan Seed Graders.

Here’s Martin’s father in a Mixed Species Cash Crop yesterday in NSW, Australia.
"Very impressive " was the comment.

Martin says ‘this has taken years, everyone is on their journey.’
Martin’s take home tips;
Back to Basics, diversity, principles, understanding and owning principles, managing for Diversity.
💋 KISS
‘I believe this is where to start.’

Thanks Martin for your passion 😉 and dedication. The crop is looking bloody awesome! 🙌 Diversity in thinking is also so rewarding 🌱💚🌱

This is a picture of some vetch that I seen growing on the side of the road in the Upper Hunter Valley.
If you look closely, you can see the top wire in a 5 wire fence!
Maybe this is a variety we should be growing in our pastures????🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

Agricultural Inoculants

Beneficial microbes that can be added to plant soil system to enhance the paddock ecosystem!

- They are living organisms, usually microbes including bacteria, fungi or protozoa, that are applied to the paddock/crop to increase the number and functional diversity of microbes in the soil, root zone and on the plant leaves.
- They are not nutrients but are used to improve the biological community which helps cycle nutrients and that helps optimise growing conditions for plant health and growth.
- Applied to the soil or to the seed

- Examples – Rhizobium, VAM (Vesicular arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi), compost tea, vermiculture (liquid or castings)

Biostimulants

- Are neither nutrients or living organisms
- Are organic compounds used to stimulate soil microbes or plant physiology
- Provide a food source to microbes or other living organisms in the soil
- Examples – Humates, molasses, hydrolysates, seaweed based products and fermented products made from organic materials.

Learn how they work in a one day workshop - Compost and Biofertilisers - on 2nd October at Bibbaringa farm, Bowna NSW.

It was great to see so many people (picture was taken shortly after the doors opened) out last night out that came for a screening of Rachel's Farm at Cessnock.
For those that haven't seen it yet, I would urge you to check it out. It showcases some of the thinking and decision making around managing our landscape in a way that is improving landscape function. This allows us to smooth out the bumps that working in nature throws up!

At the end of the movie, a great conversation was facilitated discussing how we encourage change towards encouraging young people into farming, to offering working solutions to mitigation of climate issues, and providing real, healthy, nutrient dense, actual food for the people in our communities.
The solution is likely a multifaceted one but it all starts with awareness and education.

So what can you do.............? Your money talks!
Find the farmers in your towns and regions that are using regenerative farming practices, have a conversation with them........and show your support by spending money to buy their products. You will taste the difference!

Fan moment.........I was also super grateful to meet Rachel afterwards.

Think transitioning to regenerative agriculture means losing profits? 💰 Think again!

The common belief that farms must endure years of yield and profitability decline during a regenerative transition is holding farmers back.

Is it possible to maintain or even increase yields and profits in year one?

In this article, John Kempf explores how a data-driven approach can accelerate your transition without sacrificing profitability. Discover why an all-or-nothing mindset isn't the answer, and how real farmers are making the shift with immediate results.
