Have you found a sick or injured bird? 🦜🦢 Injured or Sick Bird? Here’s What to Do! 🦢🦜

If you come across a sick or injured bird, help them get the care they need. 🩹 For South East Queensland, use the new online reporting system at wrq.org.au. If you're elsewhere in Australia, contact WIRES on 1300 094 737.

In the meantime, keep the bird safe by gently placing them in a box or covering them with something like an old washing basket. Put them in a dark, quiet space and keep pets well away.

Remember—birds of a feather need to stick together! 🐦💚

Heavy Metals (Lead, Zinc, Copper): Birds can ingest toxic heavy metals from everyday items like paint, toys, and metal objects, which can lead to severe health issues if not treated promptly

Avocado: Parts of the avocado, especially the leaves, contain persin, which can cause serious health problems, including heart failure, in birds.

Caffeine: Caffeinated beverages can lead to increased heart rates and even cardiac arrest in birds, so it’s best to stick to water.

Chocolate: Chocolate contains caffeine and theobromine, both of which can be toxic to birds, causing symptoms like vomiting, seizures, and potentially death

Onions and Garlic: These foods can cause anemia and gastrointestinal irritation in birds, so they should be avoided entirely.

Salt and Fat: Excess salt and fatty foods can lead to serious health problems, including dehydration and heart disease, especially in smaller birds.

Fruit Pits and Apple Seeds: Seeds and pits from certain fruits contain cyanide, which can be toxic to smaller birds, so these should be removed before feeding.

Xylitol: This artificial sweetener can cause severe hypoglycemia and liver damage in birds, so it's best to keep it away from them.

Smoke and Other Aerosols: Smoke and fumes from products like cleaners, perfumes, and candles are harmful to birds and can irritate their respiratory systems.

Teflon: Nonstick cookware can release toxic fumes when heated, which can be fatal to birds, so it's important to avoid using it around them.

This list isn't exhaustive; and many potential toxins can be found around the home and garden. It's crucial to supervise your parrot while they're exploring to ensure their safety and well-being.
