This Red-tailed black cockatoo came into care last Friday quite concussed.
Condition improved slowly each day, but dietary intake was a concern.
This afternoon we decided it was time to release before it's condition possibly deteriorated.
After an expected slow take-off, it was soon reunited with its "crackle", Yes an interesting term for a group of this species.
You learn something new every day with wildlife!

Another casualty of this weather, Papuan Frogmouth out of the nest today luckily found by a local passer by.
Looks as happy as the rest of us!
Take care everyone and help others if possible.
Just running short on suitable cages for smaller birds at the moment if anyone has spare.

Came in recently as a wild orphaned girl needing assistance.
A very slow process to get to a stage where you can feed without stressing the animal.
It takes time, patience and understanding of the needs of such an individual.
She is now with others of similar age and doing just fine.

Now is a great time to donate that item of clothing you never wear, doesn't fit anymore but someone else would live to have.
The reef rack is a great concept and we are most grateful to be a part of and support.

Just a reminder to those that have recently moved to Far North Queensland and the wet tropics, we are living in one of the oldest rainforests in the world.
There is an abundance of all types of wildlife that inhabit this region that you need to respect, be aware of the dangers, and care for your pets and children.
With the oncoming wet season around the corner, (no monsoon activity as yet),
Our waterways are a no go for most activities.
Our ecosystem is there for a reason and nature has its own way of letting us know where we can and should be at this time of year!
Please respect our wildlife!

Wildlife party at home tonight.
A few latecomers to 2024 and very hungry and demanding as you can hear.
All quiet for now.
Stay well and safe everyone and may 2025 be your year!
Take care!
A break in the weather a couple of days ago, lucky to see these two cruising around.
Should be some nice breaks in the weather next couple of days so why not get outdoors and see what you can find, happy to share anything interesting just send to us.
Mission Beach markets on this Sunday, and with all the construction works going on recently, why not come down for a drive and support our local businesses.
Take a walk in the rainforest, visit the Jetty, have a coffee at one of our great cafes, have some lunch, stay for dinner lol.

We really do need some neighbouring support down here!

Came across some interesting birds on the weekend.
New to us, these twelve Pied Oystercatchers were resting on the foreshore in Cardwell.
Apparently quite common on our shores but nesting in this area might be a new thing.
Some local knowledge might bring more information regarding this.
Beautiful birds though.

There are significant fines for removing " Not for take" wildlife species from their environment.
It might seem like a good idea at the time, but most wildlife needs caring and rehabilitation beyond the knowledge of the general public.
More often than not, you are doing the animal an injustice and many issues can arise.
With freshwater turtles in Australia major damage can be done , wiping out entire populations due to bacteria being introduced from inadequate housing, and dumping back into the wild.
It is very tiring picking up the pieces from members of the public that think they can have a new pet, then realise it's not for them.
If you find injured or orphaned wildlife, please hand it over as required by law to your local wildlife group!
