Poor little Winnie got his tail caught in a door which resulted in the shocking loss of the tip of his tail. His owners acted fast and brought him straight down to AEC to get some quick pain relief on board. After some further investigation, Dr. Sarah Mansfield decided it was best to go ahead with a partial tail amputation. Winnie has now recovered fully and living his stumpy tail life🐱🐾

Feel good story of the week! 🐾❤️
Early last week AEC Woolloongabba had a sad little stray cat brought in with a traumatic injury to his throat/chest area.
When injured strays arrive, our medical team get to work on stabilising the patient, while our customer service team jump into action trying to find & contact the owner.
Microchips are absolutely a life saver in these situations & we were very happy to find that our new friend ‘General’ had a chip in place & we were able to make contact with his owners.
It was at this time that we found out that General had in fact been missing for 3 months & his owners were so pleased to have finally found him. This time frame explained his emaciated body condition.
General also seemed to be very pleased to have been found & wanted to make up for 3 months worth of cuddles as quickly as possible 🥰
He remained in hospital for a few days while we rehydrated him, tended his wound & controlled the infection as well as beginning a re-feeding program to get him back on track.
General is now happily back at home with his owners, making up for lost time.

We had Shadow aka Noodle back in clinic this week, this time to assist with training some of our newer vets in ultrasound.
AFAST/TFAST (survey ultrasound of the abdomen & thorax/chest) is an important part of any trauma workup & also gives us lots of information for the treatment of many of our sick patients.
Dr Naomi was there to help Dr Sophia, Dr Yasmee & Dr Jeff become the best ECC vets they can be.

AEC Woolloongabba had little Rio in hospital over the weekend for monitoring & stabilisation until her appointment with BBEVS on Monday.
While her diagnosis is still open, we were able to treat her symptoms & keep her warm & comfortable until the specialists took over her case.
Rio belongs to one of our ECC nurses Hope & we are wishing her a very speedy recovery.
We love our avian patients, especially their little kisses. 🐾 😘

My name is Lola, and unfortunately my grandpa fed me a grape! He was trying to give me a tasty snack and was not aware that grapes are highly toxic to dogs. Luckily, my family brought me down to AEC to make me vomit it back up. I am now happy and grape free and able to eat lots of other tasty dog friendly snacks. Without this procedure the grape may have caused damage to my little kidney, which can be life threatening. Thanks AEC💗

AEC Woolloongabba had a visit this week from Millie & Pippa.
Now theirs is a cautionary tale of why you shouldn’t ever give your owner any reason to believe that you have ingested rat bait 😞 including taking the packet to your bed & chewing the box.
Unfortunately when you do that, your owner (and the vet) become very concerned for your welfare & give you medicine that makes you vomit up everything you ate! Which makes you feel miserable. 🤮
Thankfully the lovely nurses Ellise & Shona were there to hold their ears back for them & comfort them during the process.
As no rat bait seemed to have been consumed, the girls were allowed to go home & return in a few days for a follow up blood test.
Now this tale has a happy ending but is a reminder to all of us to keep toxins like rat bait well away from where our curious furry friends can find them.

Feel good story of the week!
AEC Woolloongabba recently had a beautiful African Grey Parrot brought in as a stray who was clearly loved & very tame. While with us he made great friends with many of our nursing team.
Thankfully, after providing proof of ownership, we were able to put a name to our new friend, and Razzooky was able to be happily reunited with his dad & smother him in kisses! He had been missing since the 1st of March & was very obviously happy to be back with his beloved dad! ❤️

**Cuteness Alert**
AEC Woolloongabba had an adorable patient called Porky-Pie last week who definitely stole a few hearts 💕🐾💕
She had presented with vomiting & diarrhoea after possibly ingesting some palm nuts during a visit to a friend’s house.
After an ultrasound confirmed a gastric foreign body, we were able to remove it via endoscopy & found small palm nuts & a piece of rubber all wound up in a ball of grass.
After her procedure our hospital nurse Jamie decided the best place for her to recover was having cuddles while we did evening handover.
Porky-Pie went home the next day & on to new adventures.

Silly Koda decided that his medication (Metacam) was a very yummy treat and consumed the whole bottle. Thankfully mum caught naughty Koda and brought him down to emergency straight away for supportive care.

Overdose of Metacam can cause GI issues such as gastric ulceration and renal toxicity. General treatment involves administering activated charcoal and following up with supportive care which involves fluid therapy and blood work through out their stay in hospital. Koda came in happy and left even happier and so did his Mum. We have been told he is back to his normal shenanigans🐾🤩

Poor little Bindi had to spend the weekend with us recently after having a tick removed & receiving treatment at her regular vet.
While Bindi was lucky & has recovered from the toxin, unfortunately not all pets are so lucky.
Tick prevention is always the best option, please speak to your regular vet to find the product that suits you and your pet best.

🐾Oh, what an Easter weekend it’s been at the Animal Emergency Centre! Many of our furry friends couldn’t resist the sweet temptation of chocolate, and Henry here is no exception - caught red-handed, or should we say, chocolate-pawed!

Despite his guilty conscience and feelings of nausea, Henry’s spunky personality shined through. Sure, his aim might’ve missed the vomit bucket, but who could stay mad at that adorable face? Nurse Alex certainly couldn’t resist his charm! And as for Henry’s unique approach to treats….. well, let’s just say he likes to enjoy them wholeheartedly.🍫 Hopefully he has learnt the importance of sticking to pet friendly foods!🥳

Poor Stewy had to learn the hard way that chocolate isn’t good for dogs.
After consuming approximately 150g of Easter bunny & mini eggs, Stewy had to pay a vist to AEC for emesis & activated charcoal.
Theobromine & caffeine in chocolate are toxic to dogs with symptoms varying from vomiting & diarrhoea, to tachycardia & cardiac arrhythmia’s or at very high doses, even seizures.
Keep all your Easter treats well away from your pets this weekend & if an ingestion does occur, like Stewy’s, give us a call or head on down so we can help your over-indulgent friend.

We are available 24/7 whenever you need assistance.

Watch out for chocolate! Chocolate treats and candy can be very toxic to pets, leading to vomiting, diarrhea, elevated heart rate, seizures, and even death. Keep chocolate bunnies and eggs safely away.

Be careful with Easter baskets. The plastic grass, ribbons, and small toy fillers can cause intestinal blockages if swallowed by your curious pet.

Rich holiday foods like ham or turkey skin can upset your pet’s stomach and potentially cause pancreatitis - a painful inflammation of the pancreas. Stick to their regular diet.

Meet little Munchkin. Unfortunately, Munchkin acquired a transverse radius ulna fracture and had to undergo bandaging🚨Thanks to the assistance of Nurse Nate and the rest of the AEC team, we were able to place the bandage and even uplift munchkin and her owners spirits with a funky design. Now, little munchkin is on the road to a full recovery with plenty of rest.

Sending heaps of love to Munchkin from the AEC team and wishing her nothing but the best on her journey back to full health and her playful, puppy-like self!🥳🐶

🚨🐾 Attention Pet Parents! 🐾🚨

With tick season in full swing, it's more important than ever to stay vigilant! We're noticing a surge in tick cases, so knowing the signs is crucial to keep our furry companions safe!

Keep an eye out for symptoms of paralysis ticks in your pets:
🕷️ Persistent coughing or gagging
🕷️ Difficulty breathing or rapid panting
🕷️ Weakness or unsteady on legs
🕷️ Change in voice or excessive drooling
🕷️ Vomiting or regurgitation

If you spot these signs, ACT IMMEDIATELY:
1️⃣ If you find a tick, safely remove the tick using fine-tipped tweezers or a tick remover (remember to bring the pulled tick into the vet for identification)
2️⃣ Seek urgent veterinary assistance for further treatment.

Prevention is key:
🌿 Use vet-recommended tick preventatives consistently.
🚫 Avoid known tick-infested areas or long grass during walks.

Remember to search your pet regularly for ticks, even if your pet is up to date with prevention!

DOGGY DONORS, WE URGENTLY NEED YOU❗

Just like sick people, sometimes our patients require a blood transfusion to assist them in their recovery from a serious illness or accident. Our supply is critically low, and we are in URGENT need of blood donors to help our patients at the Animal Emergency Centre at Woolloongabba

WHAT HAPPENS?
Your pet will get admitted to our hospital as one of our VIP patients. Upon admission, a free examination, and blood test will be performed to ensure your pet is able to donate.
Your pet will then be prepared to donate. For most pets, this means lying on their side, though for more excitable pets, sedation or general anaesthesia may be required.

We collect 1 unit of blood from your pet, which is approximately 450ml for dogs, and 60ml for cats. This typically takes around 10 minutes. Your pet will then be provided with intravenous fluids and a snack, just like humans! We will then place a bandage over the site, and monitor your pet to make sure they are fit to go home!

In addition to you and your pet helping us save lives, to thank you both for your donation, there are several benefits including:

This sweet boy was dumped as a 3week old kitten, along with his brother. The team at Woolloongabba hand raised him, and he is now ready for his new home.
Appropriately 4 months old, desexed, fully vaccinated, microchipped and wormed.
Use to other cats and children.
Very friendly and loves to cuddle up after a long day of being a kitten. Super playful and will give you hours of entertainment.
Has met dogs but hasn't lived with them.
He is a chunky boy, and we assume ragdoll x
Litter trained
