Happy New Year everyone!
An update on our plans for 2024. The new year has brought quite a bit of interest in our Stockmanship and Sheepdog Training Days, which is great!

Frustratingly, our plans for 2024 have already hit a wall 🤦‍♀️ The almost weekly cycle of wet weather here at Strathalbyn has delayed harvest for all of us (we still have around 1000 acres to go at this point), and has also impacted our shearing plans.

This means our plans for a Stage 1 Training Day on Kangaroo Island, and the Stage 2 we were planning here, both in February, are still up in the air and most likely to be delayed.

We'll keep things happening on our farm whenever we can dodge the weather, and we'll let you know as soon as we set dates for the Training Days. I'll get an interest list up on our website soon so you can let us know if you're interested.

In the meantime, you can spend time on these things to help prepare you for training:
- bonding with your dog
- stop and release games to establish a good stop command
- jumping up on utes, hay bales, etc. Make it a game.
- when leading, make sure the dog walks next to or slightly behind you by swishing something in front of you

Congratulations to Charlotte on her first Junior Handler win at the SA State Championships sheepdog trial yesterday. Rivercoe Roy was pretty pleased with himself, too.

The most exciting part was getting the sheep in the pen, and some very positive comments from the judge, Mr Anthony Ireland. Thanks, of course, to Pat Wake who goes out with the juniors to give advice.

Our heart rates were up this afternoon during the Top 20 at the Supreme Australian Championships in Strathalbyn. Milton and Andrina Floss missed getting the pen gate shut by just one second, costing him 20 points! Despite the setback, they still made the Top 10, up against competitors from all around Australia!

The Top 10 will be run tomorrow after lunch at the Strathalbyn Showgrounds. Entry is free, or you can watch the livestream on YouTube by searching Supreme Australian Championships sheepdog trials.

We've had a last minute cancellation for Saturday's Stage 1 Stockmanship and Sheepdog Training Day. We have room for two more dogs, so if you'd like to come, with one or two dogs, jump on and register! It's been a busy time on the Fleurieu with the Finniss and Strathalbyn trials.

Milton took out first and second place at Finniss with Andrina Floss and Wondara Banjo respectively. Both dogs worked really well.

At the Strathalbyn trial Charlotte came second in the Junior Handler class with Rivercoe Roy. Annie Doecke, who attended a Stage 1 Stockmanship and Sheepdog Training Day with us last July, took out the win in the Encourage class with her dog, Jemma. Congratulations to both girls!

The Junior Handler and Encourage events are giving valuable experience to new triallers, with modified courses but the same sense of achievement!

Milton was really happy with the way his dogs worked, but was outclassed this time. Banjo made the final, but came sixth.

Last night at the SA Working Sheepdog Association AGM, Joanne Flavel was presented with Life Membership. Joanne is one of our senior judges and has been SAWSDA secretary/treasurer/registrar for 31 years, accepting the position again for 2023 at the meeting.

Congratulations on 31 years of outstanding service. 👏
