Two pups. Same litter. Totally different coats 🐶✨
How is that possible? It all comes down to genetics! Even siblings can inherit different coat genes - some get wool, some fleece, some shaggy.
Here’s what you need to know about each:
Wool Coats (like Ruby!)
✨ Classic Poodle-like curl
✨ Non to low-shedding
✨ Needs regular brushing & grooming to prevent mats
Fleece Coats (like Chili!)
🌊 Wavy, “teddy bear” look
🌊 Non to low-shedding
🌊 Slightly easier to maintain than curly coats, but still needs regular grooming
Shaggy Coats
🍂 Straighter, relaxed “flat retriever” look
🍂 Non to low-shedding
🍂 Lower grooming needs than wool/fleece coats
The science…
Each puppy is a little genetic masterpiece, and we usually don’t know exactly what coat they’ll have until they arrive. When a fleece coat is mixed with a wool coat, we can see a variety of outcomes – some fleece, some wool.
But when a shaggy coat is mixed with a fleece coat, the result is all fleece coats (that’s why we can say with confidence what some litter’s coat types will be!)
