Spring is here! A change in seasons means a change in our pasture and forage. Horses can be affected by this new growth of grass. This can impact each horse differently, some horse owners dread spring and others can’t wait for the new grass to grow! 🌱

As the temperatures start to warm and the day’s get longer we start to see rapid growth in our pastures. This increases sugar and starch levels which can be benifical for your horse or potentially have a negaitve impact. ⚖️

Hard Keepers: If you have a horse that needs alot of calories (hay & forage) to meet their nutritional requirements your probably excited that spring is here! This eases the stress of feeding as much hay and concentrate supplements as you were throughout winter. This also means a healthy (or healthier 😂) bank account.

Easy Keepers: You are probably dreading spring and summer. This can be an extremly hard time of year to manage horses at a healthy weight and control sugar and starch levels. This can have an impact on your horses metabolic system and behaviour. 🤒

Horses diet’s require reviews during the year & little tweaks to keep them on track! A healthy gut = a happy horse 🐴

W**D WATCH WEDNESDAY! 👀🌱

It's W**d Watch Wednesday and we are calling on our community to keep an eye out for a few of the more challenging w**ds that impact our region. This week's w**d is Giant Rat's Tail Grass (GRTG).

GRTG can be difficult to distinguish from other pasture grasses. It grows up to 2 m high, with a seed head of up to 45 cm long and 3 cm wide. Seed head shape changes from a ‘rat’s tail’ when young to an elongated pyramid shape at maturity. Seeds spread by livestock in manure and on fur and hooves. It can also spread on the coat of invasive and native animals, in mud, hay, and untested pasture seed.

Did you know that feeding your horse hay helps keep them warm from the inside out? 🌾☀️ When horses eat hay, it undergoes a fermentation process in their hind gut, this fermentation process produces heat as a natural byproduct. This internal warmth is crucial, especially during colder months.

The fibrous content of hay ensures a slow and steady release of energy, unlike grains which provide quick bursts 🌽. This consistent energy helps maintain body heat over longer periods. Chewing hay also generates heat through the physical activity involved in eating and digestion.

By providing your horse with high-quality hay, you’re not only giving them essential nutrients but also helping them stay warm and cozy, ensuring their overall well-being during winter. Keep your equine friends comfortable with a regular supply of hay! ❄️🔥

FROM A PARENT:
One of my friends asked "Why do you pay so much money for your kids to ride horses?" Well I have a confession to make, I don't pay for my kids to ride horses.

So, if I am not paying for them to ride, what am I paying for?

- I pay for those moments when my kids become so tired they want to quit but don't.

- I pay for those days when my kids come home from school and are "too tired" to go to the barn but go anyway.

- I pay for my kids to learn to be disciplined.

- I pay for my kids to learn to take care of their body.

- I pay for my kids to learn to work with others and to be good team mates.

- I pay for my kids to learn to deal with disappointment, when they don't get that score they'd hoped for, but still have to work hard in the grading.

- I pay for my kids to learn to make and accomplish goals.

- I pay for my kids to learn that it takes hours and hours and hours and hours of hard work and practice to create a champion, and that success does not happen overnight.

- I pay for the opportunity my kids have and will have to make life-long friendships.

- I pay so that my kids can be in the arena instead of in front of a screen...
..I could go on but, to be short, I don't pay for horse riding, I pay for the opportunities that horse riding provides my kids with to develop attributes that will serve them well throughout their lives and give them the opportunity to bless the lives of others. From what I have seen so far I think it is a great investment!
