After a rough couple of weeks we thought we should check in.

2 weeks ago we were devastated by the sudden and unexpected passing our beautiful Nellie girl. We miss her so much. Everyday the kids tell me how much they miss their Nellie pellie 🥹

The pain is still very raw and we are hurting. We are angry at the world and have been laying low since. Being a pet lover and breeder is a twister of emotions and loosing a pet is by far the hardest to grapple with..

Nellie was a healthy happy 3yr old. She wasn’t sick and she was living her best life. Sadly we lost her to a paralysis tick. She was the bestest girl and it broke my heart not being able to save her.

Nellie (as are all our dogs) was on monthly simparico trio preventative chews but 1 still got her. Being such a quiet lazy in the sunny spot sleeping type of dog we never witnessed any symptoms her mild symptoms. We rushed her to the vet but it was too late 💔

We will take some time to heal before we figure out where to next for Tuffntango Bulldogs 🐾

Why are we posting this image?
Because sadly, there are far too many flat faced dogs out there who have nostrils like the bottom 2 rows - Severely and moderately stenotic nares (nostrils). What does this mean? As Melbourne Bulldog clinic says “Stenotic nares refers to the two nostrils having a much smaller opening than normal nosed dogs”.

Dogs with nostrils like the bottom 3 rows will have issues breathing in varying severity, their airways are obstructed by their nostrils and their bodies have to work harder to just be able to breathe. Nostrils are just one of the 5 main structures of a dogs airways, but being the first point where air is drawn into the body (other than the mouth) is it crutial that they are open enough to allow air to flow in freely rather than being forcefully sucked in through a narrow opening.

As our dogs health and ability to breathe is one of the first things we consider when breeding we do everything we can to have puppies with open nostrils and endeavour to keep those with nice open nostrils in our breeding program to continue that trait. For puppies in our litters who’s nostrils aren’t quite what we had planned for (genetics love to throw us a curve ball here and there) we will undertake surgical correction to open their nostrils at an early age and give them the best start we can even if their genetics decide otherwise.

Dogs currently in our breeding program have nostrils in the top 2 rows and we are aiming for the top row only. 🐾🐶🐾

We are beyond blessed and so thankful for the damn good people that the bulldog world has gifted us with. Daily love, support and building up of each others programs for the health and quality of the breed - some of which have become our greatest of friends and we now have the most genuine relationships that extend beyond anything to do with the breeding world. Thank you, thank you, thank you 🙏🏽

Sadly, I think we’ve all met the handful of horrible people who only show up for the greed of money and self promotion - you know the ‘greeders’. All that sparkle and shine on the surface just to find out they are mostly cold and unethical people saying and doing just about anything to line their pockets with some quick cash 🚫

🌟Above all, and in any world not just bulldog breeding, the genuine and good people will give more than they take and they will continue to rise going from strength to strength, taking others with them to the top - always showing up and wanting everyone around them to win🏅

💥and well the bad tend to self destruct and move onto their next venture just as quick as their last one sparked and fizzled out 🫠

We’ve met some horrible nasty backstabbing humans in this bulldog game but we’ve also met some phenomenal humans along the way also that are worth their weight in gold & will cherish them forever. 𝙳𝙽𝙰 𝚙𝚛𝚘𝚏𝚒𝚕𝚎𝚜 𝚊𝚗𝚍 𝚢𝚘𝚞𝚛 𝚍𝚘𝚐

A subject that is very misunderstood especially by pet buyers and newer breeders is DNA. We spent a lot of time and effort to learn the basics of DNA before even thinking of breeding and are now well versed in it - but there’s always more to learn !
There is some diseases that shouldn’t even been on a French Bulldog breed profile - but I’ll save that for another post.

But to begin - DNA clear doesn’t mean your dog is healthy, it doesn’t mean that it is better than a dog that is a ‘carrier’ of a disease and it definitely does not guarantee you won’t have problems. DNA is used as a basis when deciding potential breeding partners as 2 carriers of the same disease cannot be bred together (this is the case in MOST diseases).
If your puppy is a ‘carrier’ (has 1 copy of a disease) this does not affect the life expectancy nor health of your dog. It simply means that it cannot - or should not, be paired with a dog that has 1 or 2 copies of that same disease.

If purchasing as a pet, it’s of no concern.

If purchasing as a breeding dog - you should know what you’re doing and how to work with this.

Too many dogs are culled from programs or not used in others due to being a carrier. We have not and will not decline a stud due to carrying a disease and we have kept females regardless of being a carrier or not as we know how to work around it.

Some of our best dogs have come from carrier parents and some are even carriers themselves.

Buyers need to be aware that DNA clear means very little when purchasing a dog and is only a minuscule part of the bigger picture when looking for a puppy or potential stud/breeding bitch.

The below graph shows how recessive alleles work.

𝑹𝒆𝒄𝒆𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒗𝒆 - 𝒏𝒆𝒆𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝟐 𝒄𝒐𝒑𝒊𝒆𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒆𝒍𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒃𝒆 𝒂𝒇𝒇𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒆𝒅 (𝟏 𝒄𝒐𝒑𝒚 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒇𝒓𝒐𝒎 𝒆𝒂𝒄𝒉 𝒑𝒂𝒓𝒆𝒏𝒕).

French Bulldogs have a new ‘risk marker’ on their full breed profile called Airway Distress Syndrome ADAMTS3. A risk marker is not a set trait or disease. As per Orivets website regarding the ADAMTS3 risk marker -

Having a copy or even 2 copies of this gene does NOT mean your dog will die. It does NOT give your dog a life of breathing difficulties. Considering BOAS is one of the main concerns in French Bulldogs and 95% of Frenchies come back as 1 or 0 copies of this gene, this doesn’t make sense. The maths is just not mathing.
Along with Degenerative Myelopathy DM, these should not be present on our breeds profile nor used as a tool for breeding. There is many fit and healthy dogs being dismissed due to this and it’s so sad to see where this once beautiful breed is heading.

How about this for a review 🥹 we had the absolute pleasure of whelping Border Bulldogs most recent litter. Coco and her babies were a dream to have in our home till 4 weeks of age and breeder Tahnee is honestly an amazing person to work alongside 💕

Did you know we whelp litters? Very rarely do we post photos or brag about the litters we are whelping because honestly that’s up to the breeder and it’s their program, not ours - our job is to give mum and babies around the clock care with best practice whelping till their breeder is ready to take back over.
