Can you read your dog? How many times have you talked your dog into something because you thought it was something it wasn't?
Knowing the difference between odour, distractor & blank can take a bit of training (for the human). We often overthink the situation or don't trust the dog. Check out Jen & Trev running a line up.
First run blank but unknown to handler. You can hear the question mark at the end of 'finish'. Second run blank but unknown to handler. Trev clears the line but shows a COB as he goes to leave, so handler does one more pass (just to double check) and calls finish. Last run 1 hide but blind to handler. Look how quickly when there is odour present does the dog hit it and indicates.
The line up included proofing items and food distractors.
After the big kids finished class we ran baby Baloo on our final set up.
2 hides are known to handler. One ground hide and one hide in funnel. We run set ups like this so handler and dog don't get focused on 'things' and learn to trust and follow their nose. Watch how Baloo works the search area and how his handler allows him to search 'outside' what you would deem the 'search area'.

Sunni working a new search pattern. These are all unpaired hides. Straight lines are great to get the dogs searching nicely. Notice there was a threshold hide at the end, this is to ensure the dogs are working from the get go and not only switching on part way into the search. As you can see, Sunni nailed it.

Food refusal with River
This is a biggie for assistance dogs especially going into places like food courts. We’ve got some tasty cheese on the ground to tempt him. Notice he actively avoids it. We progressed to me throwing food while he was walking and he smashed it!!!

This is early stages of teaching the dogs to search the whole car. Hide placement can assist with this.
Notice how the dog started on one side and followed the car all the way round to the hide. This is because we did previous hides strategically placed at certain points to create a ‘odour trail’.
