Hey so we hosted out first ever Nosework trial today!

Just wanted to give a big shoutout to all of our volunteers, the officials and competitors. You all made the day run smoothly.

All of the D-Team students left with a shiney ribbon from today's ORT. They smashed all 3 odours on their first go!
This now makes them eligible to enter into any L1 or L1+ event.

A year ago, I made a promise to a little black dog at the pound.
I promised I would do everything I could to make his life better... turns out that meant coming to live with us!
Zeebles started off life with us as a timid 5 month old pup. He wouldn't follow a food lure, no interest in playing, was scared to be in new situations, and generally lacked confidence.
It's been an interesting experience for me. Usually, we think of pet dog training as a way to teach our dogs to be calm and 'well-behaved'.
I've been doing exactly the opposite with Zee.
Now 1 year in, he has learned heaps of cool things, lives with and loves the company of other dogs, is competing in nosework (and loves it), has become a monster in play, enjoys biting things (mainly me), gets to come to work with me most days and is a big smootcher in his spare time.
Most importantly, he is encouraged to express his dogness in a way that may seem counterproductive to some, but I would much rather a dog who is pushy and wants to do things than a dog who just sits in the corner too scared to make a peep.
We are still working on taking Zee to the next level. No rush. We've got plenty of time. Watch this space.

What an awesome week with Pat!
I was lucky enough to get the chance to spend a whole week with at his boot camp.
Lots of learning, training, stories by the fire, good times, and far too many small cakes.
Pat just installed a turbo charger in my brain. I'm still working through things, but I've got a new direction for Zee to bring out his inner Malinois.
Thank you Kirsty , Jason for organising everything. Dan is a dead set legend for looking after us and thanks for all of the other participants for making this one of the best weeks ever!!

Marker board session 4. Full session. Started bringing in a wee bit of R-. Can you tell which reps? Something really cool happened that I need to think about but it's pretty subtle. It involves using pressure as a continuation signal. Does the pressure demotivate him or motivate him even more?
Introducing a new odour in our detection sport class tonight. This was the 3rd round for Z. The 3rd box had inaccessible food All of the previous weeks of training have led up to us being able to do it this way. I wouldn't recommend this approach if the dog isn't ready for it. We built a marker board today. This is our 2nd session. The 1st session was free shaping. He already kinda knew what to do, so we brought the cue in early. The aim of every session is to make the next one better. We will be bringing in some R- next time. I'm excited to see what happens!

It's always sunny in Maloolaba.
Just some fun dog stuff today. Started the day with some searching after our nosework class. Still working on his heeling. I've been trying to tidy up my shoulders and head ppsition. We've moved on from having the ball act as a lure and have started adding in some movement. It's still not great but we are getting there. And some catches on the tuggy just for fun. He is getting more confident with slamming the tug. Not too bad for a bargain basement gsd x kelpie x whatever else! I def need to get better at filming this stuff as most of the cool things happend out of shot. I also really hurt my ankle and shoulder but worth it. #utilitydog #dogsofthesunshinecoast #nosework
