Here’s some cute puppies to make this caption less daunting!

Have you tested your pet for heartworm recently?

Did you know that there has been an increase of heart-worm positive cases in SEQ?

& we just had one last week in our clinic!

Next week we’re going to focus on education around heart worm disease, what it means for your pet, your preventative options & what the pesky heart worm does.

It’s an important topic, so look out for our posts.

Happy Friday and hope this weekend is glorious for you!

Write it in your phone reminders, write it down in your calendars, call/email your clinic now & set up the appointment.

This post right here is your reminder to start 2025 out well & get your pets dental health checked!

Preventative dental health is an important part of pet care. To prevent dental disease, you can prevent an array of other bodily diseases in your pets. Not only that, but we can make sure our pets aren’t in any pain that we can’t visually see. We recommend getting their teeth checked at least twice per year and at The Natural Vets we offer free dental checks.

Things you can do at home to stay on top of your pets dental health:
•Get them used to teeth brushing! We sell our own vet formulated toothpaste, but coconut oil is also an incredible alternative, with its anti-bacterial properties.
•Give your pets safe bones! (Amazing for their teeth!)
•Feed a raw diet - where they can actually chew foods like vegetables/chunked meats etc.
•Use things like Oxyfresh Water Additive - or deer velvet spray, will help fight tartar build up and support a healthy oral microbiome (both available on our website store)

It’s really important that we take action on our pets dental health! We are still seeing many cases of pets having severe Dental and gum disease! Our wish is that we see more pet owners doing the preventative maintenance than we see them booking their pets in for multiple tooth extractions!

Our pets need their teeth, and they need healthy teeth and gums! Let’s make 2025 the year of dental health care!

Recommendations to ensure your pet is hookworm free:
- Regularly test for the presence of hookwork with a FAECAL ANTIGEN TEST . We can
send your pet’s stool to a lab that screens for antigen, rather than just looking for eggs,
as hookworm may be present even if eggs are not.
- If hookworm is found, a specific deworming product will be recommended and needs to
be given monthly for a minimum 3-month period. Natural measures have not been
proven to eliminate an existing hookworm infection.
- We re-test the stool after 3 treatments, then again 3 months later.
- Routine testing is recommended at least twice yearly.
- Even if your new puppy has been regularly dewormed, we may still recommend a
hookworm test!
Note that infected pets, especially puppies or kittens, may require critical care including blood
transfusions to make a full recovery. Just deworming them won’t be adequate.
Hookworm can also pass to humans (usually by larval pe*******on through the skin), especially
young children. One of my friends from vet school was blind in one eye due to a childhood
hookworm infection from the family cat!
If you have any concerns regarding exposure please discuss with your usual health care
provider.
And if your pet hasn’t been tested for hookworm in the last 6 months, why not bring us a
Christmas gift - a little poo sample to test! (We will also gratefully receive donations of
homemade apple pie… but good luck beating Norma’s recipe. I’m still drooling.)
Poo tests for eggs cost $55. The more accurate antigen test is a bigger investment at $110.

Woo! That was a lot to read, but super important! So good work for finishing it! Thanks for sticking around!

One of the hot topics amongst our community is tick prevention in pets.

This is our reality working in a vet hospital on the Sunshine Coast:
Tick paralysis can be a rapidly fatal event for both pets and livestock.
We operate in a high tick-risk area.
We see a number of cases of tick paralysis every year in unprotected pets.
Thankfully, we haven’t had any fatalities amongst our patients.
Usually a fatal outcome is avoidable if diagnosed and treated early.
Patients with symptoms (even early ones) should be treated with the tick anti-serum.

Tick paralysis is entirely preventable.

It helps to understand a little more about tick paralysis to understand why we advocate for tick prevention and early treatment in affected pets. Especially if you have never seen a pet affected with or die from tick paralysis.

Firstly, how do ticks affect pets? As they feed they inject a poison. This poison attaches to the
neuromuscular plates (the junction between the nerves and muscles) and causes paralysis - of the limbs (which is why they become wobbly), but also of the throat, face and the respiratory muscles. So it becomes hard to stand, swallow, drink, blink, wee, and breathe.

Once respiratory symptoms are evident, the prognosis is more guarded as respiratory cases may need critical care measures such as an oxygen tent or ventilator to survive, and may have complications such as aspiration pneumonia.

The tick poison that affects the nerves is not the only poison in your pet’s body. There is more poison circulating in their bloodstream, and this can continue to attach to the nerves for another 48 hours - which is why early treatment is crucial, as your pet will continue to get worse for 2 more days once symptoms start.

The anti-serum we use to treat tick paralysis doesn’t remove the poison already attached to the nerves; it mops up all the other poison in the bloodstream, preventing them from getting any worse. Then we use lots of supportive measures to help them recover from the symptoms they are already experiencing.

Most pets tolerate the anti-serum very well with appropriate veterinary measures in place. It is a crucial part of the treatment in affected pets.

At The Natural Vets, we have other tools we use to support recovery, including IV vitamin C infusions, and homeopathic high-strength remedies, alongside general nursing and critical care. We use these alongside the tick anti-serum, not instead of. And generally our patients recover with speed and ease if treated early.
Almost all the pets we treat with tick paralysis don’t have an effective preventative regime in place. Yes, tick preventatives are pharmaceutical ‘poisons’ of a kind. And every time we post about them, it sparks a hot conversation.

However, where we live, it’s important your pet is protected.
If you would like to know more about how to keep your pet safe during tick season, and how to best navigate the quagmire that is your chemical prevention options, we recommend booking a nurse consult. Our holistic nurses provide tailored solutions for every circumstance.

And remember, nurse consults are free for all TRIBE members, so if you don’t already have your tribe membership, check it out today!
