About me...

I was born into a family of dog lovers, and at that time my family had a Border Collie who would have been a great working dog on a farm. I was taught very early on that you had to be firm but fair, a philosophy I stride for every day, no matter how frustrated I get.
The first dog I owned was a German Shepard and started formal dog obedience with the German Shepard dog club and competed in obedience competitions. During that time, I read everything on dog obedience and behaviour, and sought out advice from the best dog handlers.
I acquired my first Kelpie 15 years ago which I found out later was from Joe Spicer’s Gogetta lines. This changed my whole focus, and I became obsessed with sheepdog herding and training.
I first met Paul McPhail (Beloka Kelpies) very early on and bought a farm very close by and became good friends. I have learnt many things from Paul over the years and was fortunate to also learn important lessons every day working stock on my own farm with a team of Kelpies.
I was also fortunate to do training with Neil and Helen McDonald (recently known from the ABC show Muster Dogs), the late great Greg Prince, George Pickles, and had advice and mentoring from many great working dog people including Joe Spicer (Gogetta Kelpies), Darren McAinch (Fudge) and many others.
My training and dog handling philosophies have been moulded from all these great people as well as my own experience working on my farm alone with my dogs. I made every mistake known plus a few more so these lessons will stick with me for life.

Sheep Herding Training – FAQ.

Is this something that your dog could be good at and enjoy?
Yes absolutely. If you have a breed of dog that has bloodlines traced back to sheep herding it is likely that your dog will have some instincts to herd sheep.
Is this something that could be good for you and your dog?
Yes, training your dog on sheep is a very a satisfying activity for you and your dog.
• It greatly increases the bond between you and your dog.
• Training on sheep has huge benefits in obedience off lead training, mental stimulation and socialisation.

What is involved?
First time lesson – We talk about the concept of sheep herding and find out about you and your dogs background, any issues you have with your dog and what are your objectives.
We explain how the round yard works and what instincts we are looking for.
We then introduce your dog to the sheep in the round yard in a controlled environment. We can then ascertain what level of interest the dog has in the sheep and if it has natural instinct. Note that the first time a dog/pup is introduced to sheep they may seem uninterested, but this will most likely change once they get more confident.
Once they show interest then we position ourselves and the sheep so that the dog will naturally bring the sheep to us as we walk around the yard. This may or may not happen in the first place, however we give the dog ample opportunity with at least three separate times in the yard. The dog also can learn from observing other dogs working.
Where is it located?
We are located in Eerwah on the Sunshine Coast Queensland (ten minutes from Eumundi and 30 minutes from Noosa Heads)
What days and times are the lessons?
In summer lessons will be restricted to early morning and late afternoon.
As we are just starting lesson you will need to contact us for what days and times are available.
How long are the lessons and how much does is cost?
Lessons go for one hour and will be restricted to three handlers/dogs. Onlookers welcome.

Do you have a good bond with your dog?

Some things to consider when answering that question.
Do they ---

• Keep tabs on your location when they are off leash
• Frequently check in to see where you’re at (when they are not asleep)
• Perform obedience happily without hesitation
• Make a great effort to find you when you play hide-and-seek
• Have a strong desire to be near you
• Have a high level of focus on you, evidenced by frequently looking at you
• Strong ability to communicate needs, wants, and concerns. (Do you understand what your dog wants in almost any given situation?)
• Once taught Come, the dog always responds, even when distracted.

Let me know your thoughts, is there anything I missed?

Dog training levels are a way of categorising the progression of a dog's training, indicating the complexity of commands and behaviours they have mastered. The levels are not standardized universally, and different training programs or trainers may have their own variations. However, the general idea is to organise training into manageable steps, allowing the dog and the owner to build on their skills gradually. Below is a common representation of dog training levels:
1. Beginner/Basic Level:
• Name Recognition: Teach the dog to respond when called by their name.
• Sit: Train the dog to sit on command.
• Stay: Teach the dog to remain in a position until given a release cue.
• Down: Train the dog to lie down on command.
• Come: Teach the dog to come to you when called.
• Loose Leash Walking: Work on walking politely on a leash without pulling.
2. Intermediate Level:
• Leave It/Drop It: Train the dog to let go of items in their mouth when commanded.
• Heel: Improve loose leash walking by having the dog walk by your side.
• Wait: Teach the dog to pause at doorways or before crossing streets.
• Go to Bed: Train the dog to go to a specific spot or their bed on command.
• Recall with Distractions: Practice the "come" command with increasing distractions.
3. Advanced Level:
• Advanced Stay: Increase the duration and distance of the "stay" command.
• Advanced Heel: Work on off-leash heel and maintaining focus in distracting environments.
• Advanced Recall: Practice off-leash recalls in various situations with high distractions.
• Agility and Tricks: Introduce fun tricks and agility exercises to keep the dog mentally stimulated.
It's important to note that not all dogs will progress through these levels at the same pace, and some dogs may not need or be suited for specialised training. Training should always be approached with positive reinforcement, patience, and an understanding of the individual dog's temperament and abilities. If you are unsure about training your dog or wish to achieve specific goals, consulting with a professional dog trainer.
