Let's talk about Hip Dysplasia
Hip dysplasia is a malformation of the hip structure, and unfortunately, it's still common in the pet dog population. It can be seen in all breeds and sizes of dog and seems to be increasingly common in smaller poodle cross breeds. The severity varies between a mild issue to debilitating and life shortening effects. We still do not know the exact causes but that it is a combination of genetics, lifestyle (weight in particular), and let's face it, luck.
π
Excessive exercise in puppies DOES NOT cause hip dysplasia, but repetitive jumping, spinning, and ball chasing can make things worse. However, early intervention is key to reducing long-term effects, and we strongly recommend that all dogs, regardless of breed or size, have a hip x-ray taken at the time of neutering.
π
Management changes and physio/rehab can make a huge difference in managing hip dysplasia. We also highly recommend that all puppies take a joint supplement such as as support when growing. Follow us for more information on managing hip dysplasia.
