WHY DO DOGS CARE WHERE THEY P**P?

Have you noticed, when your dog is about to p**p, he starts circling a spot before actually doing his business? This isn’t just for fun. As crazy as it may sound, dogs prefer to do their business in a north-south alignment with the Earth’s magnetic field. When going to the toilet, they act like a compass. Isn’t that crazy?!

Why do dogs like being petted?

For dogs, petting is not really about the touch itself, though they do absolutely love it when you find the right spot. When you’re petting them, you are conveying certain emotions and energies to your dog – praise, love comfort – and they respond to it, enjoying your love and attention.

No one like walking in the rain – not people, not dogs. However, a cloudy day is not too bad, just sometimes a bit humid and dreary. Moments like this, after a day of dark clouds, makes the walk so much more light, happy and enjoyable.

Dogs love being petted, however, it is beneficial to you too! It has benefits to you both physically and mentally. It has been shown that just 15 minutes of petting a dog can lower blood pressure by 10%, lowers feeling of stress and depression and can combat loneliness. Pet your dog more often, it’s good for both you and your dog.

How do dogs know people’s emotions?

It is a well-known saying that dogs can smell fear. But that isn’t the only thing that they can smell – dogs can smell a wide array of emotions, including happiness, sadness and fear. Dogs then adapt to the emotions that they have smelt – if you’re happy, your dog may run around and bark, paying with you, if you’re sad, your dog will quickly snuggle up with you and sit quietly.

Dogs move their tails a lot. All these movements show their emotions. A loose wag shows that the dog is relaxed and content. Quicker wags with hip movements show that the dog is happy or greeting a loved one. Tail up – your dog is confident or aggressive, tail down and between legs – your dog is fearful or submissive.

Right after a day of showers, we were able to get out and witness this beautiful sight. Everything is so fresh, but also slippery! There have been many a times I have slipped on mud while walking in such after-rain weather.

Why do dogs lick people?

Many love being licked on the face by their dog – after all, they must love me so much! As pups, dogs lick to show affection or to ask for food. This doesn’t have to be humans, they do it to their mothers as well. Once they grow, dogs lick to show submission to an authority. And of course to ask for food or affection.

Why do dogs shake themselves when not wet?

Dogs shake the water on them all over you after a nice bath. However, sometimes they shake themselves when they’re not wet. It’s been shown that dogs shake themselves to get over especially intense emotions, like after an almost-fight with another dog or after an intense show of love from it’s owner. Another reason may be instinct – to shake off bugs, fleas and other animals that may have crawled on them.

Why do dogs move their leg when you scratch them?

Dogs have a certain reflex called the “scratch reflex”. When you scratch your dog, it irritates their skin, like wind or a bug might. This then causes the nerves to send a message to the leg to kick in an attempt to get rid of the irritant.

Leptospirosis- Locally Acquired Case!

Most of you are aware of the emerging Leptospirosis outbreak in Sydney affecting dogs. This has now extended to the North Shore more recently. Heartbreakingly, we have had our first locally acquired case confirmed on the 3rd of June.

Leptospirosis has an extremely high mortality rate and poses a risk to both dogs and people in our area. Luckily there is a vaccination available for dogs which is the best chance of prevention of the disease. Pymble vet, under the guidance of the Australian Veterinary Association and local specialists, are recommending this preventative vaccine for all dogs in our area.

What is Leptospirosis?
Leptospirosis is an infectious disease that causes serious illness in dogs, other animals, and even people.The disease is caused by spiral-shaped bacteria called leptospires that live in water or warm, wet soil. The disease is largely spread through rat urine which contaminates stagnant water. Dogs can present with many different symptoms ranging from lethargy, fever, diarrhoea and vomiting to kidney and liver failure.

Is there a risk to humans?
Leptospirosis is considered zoonotic, spreading from body fluids (urine mostly) of affected animals to humans through contact with mucous membranes or skin abrasions. That's right- the disease also poses a risk to us!

How do I protect my dog?
Pymble Veterinary Clinic recommends that all dogs be vaccinated against this disease. The vaccination starts with a course of two injections 2-4 weeks apart. Please phone 94994010 to make an appointment now.

To minimise risk of exposure:
• Avoid stagnant water: Don’t let your dog drink from puddles and take your own portable bowl to the dog park.

• If you have rats around your house we suggest you try to reduce these numbers if possible, but please be careful rat bait is highly toxic to dogs and you must ensure any rat bait is put in locked pet proof boxes. Discuss this with your pest control company.

Dogs can have all sorts of exercise – running, walking, up-hill, on streets, through bush. Another amazing exercise for them is swimming. Swimming is great for muscles, a great stimulation and a great way to cool off along the way.

Dogs have a whole 18 muscles that they can use to move their ears. This allows them to listen all over the place, however, this is not all this movement is for. Their ear position can be used to express emotion, like happiness, fear and curiosity and are essential for balance.

Many dog owners have probably noticed that dogs are great at understanding you, from commands to even when you are angry or happy. Studies have shown that they understand both words and emotions that are behind them. Some scientists have even tried tricking dogs by saying out-of-context words like “whatever” with praising intonations, like when you say “good boy”. Guess what? The dog was not tricked.

In addition to super smelling powers, dogs have great hearing. They are able to hear twice the amount of frequencies that we do. They are also able to hear sounds 4 times further away then we can. It’s safe to say that they have super ears and noses.

Why do dogs pant?

Unlike humans, dogs do not sweat. Sweat is very important, as it cools us down. For dogs to cool down, they need to pant. This circulates cool air through their bodies and evaporates water from their mouth. If your dog’s panting becomes abnormal, like prolonged, load or harsh panting, this could be a sign of something serious and may require Vet attention.

Why do dogs have wet noses?

There are two main reasons for their wet noses. One – wet noses work better. Scent particles, which give us a scent, stick better to damp surfaces. Second – wet noses are cooler. Dogs are able to dissipate the heat through their nose, feet pad and by panting.
