In the ongoing fight for animal rights and their protection, it’s always important to celebrate the WINS, and the 2027 end to greyhounds being forced to race at the notorious Wentworth Park (WP) death track is a WIN. Like so many other individuals and organisations who have campaigned long and hard to shut down dog racing at WP, Animal Liberation is rejoicing. We are also pausing to reflect on the number of greyhounds who will continue to suffer injuries and death on the first deadly turn at WP, between now and 2027 when the lease expires.
The NSW Premier, Chris Minns and his Labor Government have rightly reinstated the promise made by the last NSW Government – their announcement is neither noble nor bold, and it certainly hasn’t been made with greyhound welfare and wellbeing in mind. Appallingly, GRNSW’s CEO, Steve Griffith is still playing the ‘victim’, asking for more time. Shockingly, the Minns minority Labor government has also announced an additional $10 million dollars under the Capital Grants Program (public money), to be handed over to GRNSW, confirming NSW Labor remains at the industry’s beck and call, remains apathetic and deaf to the overwhelming views of compassionate NSW citizens.
WP has been upheld by the industry as its crown jewel, but behind the PR gloss there is a track responsible for injuries, deaths, doping scandals, and serious welfare breaches. The WP track will be bulldozed and the land will be returned for community use after nearly a century of animal cruelty in Sydney!
We extend our thanks to every single compassionate human and all organisations who have fought relentlessly for this day. The team at Animal Liberation will continue to fight all new and all refurbishment death track applications. This is the beginning of the end for this gambling-fuelled dog-killing industry and we will continue leading this fight.
