Loki’s first session of a structured walk ☺️
During this rainy weather, it can be difficult to take your dog out on structured walks or for free time at the park.
This is a perfect time to get your dog’s mind working! Mental stimulation can be just as tiring as physical exercise for your dog.
- You can feed their meals in kongs, treat puzzles and/or snuffle mats and even scatter food all over the backyard for them to sniff out.
- Short, frequent sessions of obedience training or teaching new tricks.
- Interactive games like tug of war, fetch and hiding their favourite toy and getting them to find it.
- You can get involved and play hide and seek with your pooch.
The possibilities are endless. Reach out if you would like some more ideas 😊
All training sessions should be fun for both you and your pup 🥳
Jax’s first session on loose leash walking 👏 👏
Being a 40kg Labrador, his owners were not able to walk him without being dragged down the street.
I think he did very well in the session 😊
Before you teach your dog a new skill, such as sit, stay or down, it is important to teach them a marker word such as “yes”. This marker word (or clicker) must be followed by a treat.
This will make training cues so much easier as it enables you to immediately communicate to your dog that they have done the desired behaviour.
You may like to start by practising saying “yes” to your dog and immediately giving them a treat, without asking them to do a particular skill. This will enable your dog to understand the connection between the marker word and the treat.
I hope this helps you with your training! Reach out if you have any questions 😊
When teaching a behaviour to your dog, it is crucial that you celebrate small steps of success in order to avoid big leaps of failure.
The aim is to minimise any potential mistakes your dog might make while teaching obedience.
For example, when teaching the command stay, I recommend that you only take 1 or 2 steps away from your dog, rewarding the stay behaviour then, before building up to longer distances.
Eventually you should also practise this in distracting environments, such as the local park, just like Nami in this video ☺️
