Alfie the Retriever x Lab has spent the day socialising and learning to be around older dogs.

It Doesn't matter how experienced with dogs or how much you think you understand dog behaviour. When when it comes to integrating other dogs to an existing pack, it's up to you, the human to control every interaction.

My dogs are very well behaved and listen to me in high pressure situations. But, they don't have the same ability to make rationale decisions like a human can therefore, regardless of how much I trust my dogs, they are still dogs and will tear dogs to shreds if I'm not there to intervene.

Ensure your puppy or misbehaving dog is calm enough and trained on their own prior to throwing them into a pack of adult dogs.

It's particularly important when you have well trained and behaved dogs around puppies or reactive dogs that you the human, ensure the puppy or disobedient dog doesn't behave inappropriately and leave the correcting entirely onto another dog. This causes frustration and leaves your dog with no choice but to deal with the inappropriate behaving dog/puppy.

If you treat your dog like your Best Mate, by ensuring they have a job and giving them fulfillment but, also remember they are still dogs and do doggy things and, cannot wear the responsibility of those a human can.

Your dog is not just your employee, they cannot be put on an equal footing to us humans. Your dog can work for you but ultimately, they're your companion and friend.

Banning the use of these tools will ultimately result in more dogs suffering, more dogs being put down and more dogs suffering for longer durations in shelters.

The fact is, there hasn't ever been a meta-analysis conducted on the efficacy of positive only techniques. There has been a few smaller studies which were riddled and tainted in bias leaning toward positive only techniques.

There has been little evidence to suggest these tools are bad or dangerous nor detrimental to a dog. There is however, dog trainers all over the world with thousands of dogs that had been successfully rehabilitated from really dangerous behaviours using these tools appropriately and humanely.

Making false academic claims and spreading fear and confusion is a very serious offence. Students get kicked out and banned from university if the even accidently submitted a paper that had false claims and fictional evidence.

What has happened is in my opinion, is fraud. Now people who have a really dangerous situation with their dog, and either dump, kill or surrender because they couldn't overcome the problem.

Imagine the people with aggressive dogs that can't afford to go back for the 18th training lesson in their positive only program and persist with distracting their dog with treats and continually question why their dog won't eat the treats with this trigger still present.

I have been thinking long and hard since hearing about this policy being passed the way it did.

This is a really wonderful summary highlighting the dangerous and slippery slope our society is taking if these sorts of policies are getting passed through our governments without any due diligence taking place.

It's time for our government to invest some of the money they profit from the pet ownership economy and start putting that into getting some unbiased meta-anaylsis on the efficacy and legitimacy of positive only dog training.

Nearly 70% of Australian households have pets and the governments running this country have no problems passing policies without conferring with them first? A debate must be had where all sides are able to present their evidence and we must fight to ensure we protect this right as well. This will have lasting effects on many dogs in not just Tasmania, but the rest of the country as this becomes increasingly widely accepted as the norm.

Tadhg (pronounced Tige) the French Bulldog has been nipping, biting, jumping and behaving inappropriately toward his humans guests and suffering with separation anxiety and impulse control.

As is typical with anxious and overly aroused dogs - he was also a bit of a nightmare on leash as well.

Today we flipped his little world upside down as he knows it and have begun addressing his undesirable behaviours.

His human pack have had enough of being bossed around by their dog and having their guests bitten and jumped all over. Armed with knowledge and confidence, his humans are now quipped in ways to manage his biting and overall escalating arousal.

So this week we have been extra busy with our small pack of 2 turning into 3! Mace and I welcome this beautiful Kelpie: Nova into our life and couldn't be happier!

A special mention and shout out to Vee's Dog Walking & Pet Sitting for making this happen!

A few weeks ago I met with the owner of Vee's Dog Walking & Pet Sitting. Vee and I discussed & shared about our love for the Kelpie!
During our conversation, there was mention that one of her clients had a Kelpie that they were looking to rehome due to some circumstances.

I had been considering adopting another dog for some time now and, after Vee sent through some more information, pictures and videos I couldn't resist.

Vee went out of her way to facilitate and connect us to Nova's humans. This included after hours calls & texts and, also on her weekend away from work, scheduled and attended the first introduction.

Vee went out of her way to help Nova's humans find a suitable home and expressed to me numerous times that she was devoted in doing all she could to work out a happy resolution for all parties involved, but particularly had Nova at the forefront of her concerns.

Vee also spoke with passion about her love and devotion to her work and willingness to learn and grow which, I'd argue, is an essential quality to have when it comes to caring for other peoples furbabies.

Smidge the Chihuahua, one of our clients last week was suffering separation anxiety and couldn't leave her humans alone.

A little over a week from my visit and Smidge and her humans have put in the hardwork by enforcing some new rules and boundaries. Smidge now chooses to lay in her crate when her human is sitting on the couch rather than being attached permanently.

Dogs don't need to be around us 24/7 nor is it healthy for a dog to feel like they cannot be on their own. We love our dogs and love that they love us in return however, there has to be a healthy balance.

Other undesired behaviours are typically presented when a dog feels too closely attached to their humans, not to mention the stress on the dog when the human has to leave them alone.

Intelligent and energetic dogs like this Mareema, Bentley here, without strict rules and boundaries in their lives end up creating jobs for themselves.
If we aren't giving them ways to channel their big brains in constructive and acceptable ways, they WILL make up little jobs for themselves and we probably won't like them ie, barking at everything that moves.

I love to help people with these energetic dogs and their owners harness the energy and potential into more constructive ways, teach how to communicate what they really want their dogs to be doing in a way dogs understand.

By introducing rules and boundaries while also adding an 'off switch', dogs begin to change their habbits. If a dog is so used to being in a state of constant arousal, it can take a while for them to relax and learn what calm is. Then we can begin to reshape their view and purpose in our lives.

Snoopie is a fearful and anxious dog. His owners worked on helping him overcome both theirs and his fears and managed to get past the crocodile rolling on leash and practice walking together amongst other confidence related issues.

Apollo and his human mates had an in-home consult yesterday to work on his new rank (below humans, not boss of) within his family dynamic! He will appreciate not having to run the house likewise will his humans appreciate not having a Cavoodle tell them what to do!

Hercules the beautiful British Bulldog was beginning his crate training session last night. He is suffering from some separation anxiety and owns the household. He was a bit Bulldog stubborn, was used to hogging the couch and running the house!
We had to confine his space a little and stop him running the show. Luckily his humans had this baby gate as this way we can control the environment and wait for him to go in on his own terms to get his beloved treats from inside and not run around the house staying in a state of hyper arousal.
Sometimes in these situations, patience is required by not trying to force him in there creating a negative association with crates. His humans are waiting to give him lots of praise once he goes in and are firming up when he begins to whine and bark to get his own way.
