Recently Margi has started a bit of Slat mill training with @rosesk9buddies and in an effort to get her more comfortable jumping up onto new surfaces I created this little setup at home, progressively adding a little difficulty by using cushions to tighten the path Margi had to walk or jump through. Next up is to add something over head to mimic the cross bar of the slat mill.

So I just wanted to talk about teaching impulse control and all the opportunities you have in your day to day life with your dog to practice it. Right here I’ve stopped to play frisbee with Margi on our morning walk but I don’t just throw the frisbee over and over without making Margi work for it, here you can see she does a little spin I put her in a sit then I pretend like I’m going to throw it, wiggle it around before I throw it and give her the release command “free”. You can practice building up the time between throwing the ball or frisbee and giving your release command by holding onto your dog while you throw and waiting for them to give into the pressure before releasing them. Some other easy opportunities for practicing impulse control are waiting for food, sitting before going through doors/gates/crossing roads etc this will help teach your dog to look to you for guidance before they just act on impulse 😉

Ring Toss Progress - This is probably our 5th or 6th session as I was a little slack after our last ring toss video and didn’t keep the consistency up, however here we are and Margi is earning her breakfast, the skill is at a stage now where she only gets rewarded for the ring going onto the post. Really happy with the progress so far and I know if we stay consistent and keep practicing each day we’ll reach our goal in no time!

Watching this back I could of marked a little earlier when Margi first looked back at me after getting a bit distracted by the dogs on the other side of the fence but I also wanted to see how it would play out without me interfering with a recall command, as you can see she did make the choice to return on her own without too much delay 😁

Free shaping with Margi The end goal is for Margi to fetch the ring and drop it over the pole. This is our second little session chopped up to make a 1min video. I’ve started by back chaining the skill so Margi can understand how the ring and pole work together. You see I reward successive approximation but then require more and more from her has the video goes on. Love seeing her work through a little bit of frustration and succeed 😊 Free shaping is such a fun thing to do with your dog and teaches your dog that it must work to earn the reward, promotes ongoing improvement and allows the dog to control the outcome
Practicing our recall 🐶
A long line is a great tool to use for practicing recall, you can see here Margi wanted to run over to the other dog that was off lead, having her on the long line enabled me to stop that from happening it would also of allowed me to communicate with her with a little pop on the collar had she not responded to the recall. While we’re still in training phase of recall we want to be able to insure the dog complies, using a long line enables this 🙂 every failed recall attempt just reinforces an unwanted response from the dog.
