Parthenogenesis round 2. Bit of a story but an interesting set of outcomes.

In the 2022 season I paired an albino granite female with a silver pepper male hoping to make some tripe hets. It was both of their first times breeding. Plenty of locks and everything was looking great right up until the eggs were laid. The clutch was messy with lots of slugs but had a few decent looking fertile eggs. 2 eggs went the distance but I was in shock when I saw an albino head poking out of the first egg. I cut both the eggs to get a better look and had no idea I'm staring at two albino granites. First thoughts were ive made a mistake somewhere in pairings but after some phone calls the most reasonable answer was parthenogenesis. After the two albino granites left the egg i quickly popped them to confirm they were both females. Both those hatchies have been strong and problem free despite warnings I got that partho babies often don't do well.

Fast forward to 2023 season and i tried the same pairing again but just got a pile of slugs.

This season I thought I would try something different and used a caramel super zebra het albino male with the original albino granite girl. Lots of locks again but 14 slugs and just 1 good looking egg made me think she was planning on doing it all herself again. Sure enough a female albino granite hatched this week.

It will be interesting to see what happens when I attempt to breed the first two parthenogenesis offspring next season. Being basically a complete homozygous copy of their mother I'm guessing they may well only want to reproduce by parthenogenesis also?

Interested to hear if anybody has ever grown up and bred parthenogenesis hatchies before. Crazy science project and just shows how nature can totally surprise at times.
