Thomas presented to us for a routine lumpectomy on back left leg, when the owners mentioned he had been slightly lethergic and weak. With further investigation of x-rays, blood work and ultrasound a large splenic mass was found. Our amazing vets had the risky job of taking out the 3kg mass that was caught just in time as it was starting to bleed out into the abdomen where 2 litres of blood tinged fluid was flushed out. He was still critical after surgery due to huge amounts of blood loss so he had a few injections to help boost his red blood cell production. He is now stable but is stilll on the mend and is slowly feeling better everyday.💪☺️

Little Larry has an ulcer on the eye which has been there for few weeks, we are in the progress of healing which the inflammatory cells have migrated and filled in the ulcer on recheck appoinment today. The next step is to use a mini stem cell technique where Larry's own blood serum is collected to help the healing of the lesion along with anti inflammatory eye drops for next few weeks.
Corneal ulcers are common with brachy breeds due to the conformation of the face. Their eyeballs are easily scratched or damaged from foreign objects, toys, or simply from scratching dry eyes from allergies and other reasons.

Ways to minimise injuries, it is to keep eyes moist and nails short and make sure there is no sharp objects like wires, or chipped wood along the fences or outside the house.

We will recheck in a couple weeks time. He has been a champ and a very happy patient! 😊🐶

Employee of the week: Sam Goodall

"Growing up in the country, Sam was surrounded by all kinds of animals all of his childhood.
From an early age he knew he wanted to work with animals and go into the medical field, nursing his pets to health and training them.

Having finished his certificate II last year in 2023, he is currently studying his certificate IV Veterinary Nursing and a canine behavioural course on campus.
After completing his certificate IV, he is looking to study exotic animals and other science courses where possible.

Being a cat lover, he has two adorable cats at home as well as his dad's two bulldogs and fish he helps look after. "

Employee of the week: Niamh Durack

Hey Everyone! My name is Niamh pronounced Neve :)) I am a Vet Nurse at Family Vets and am currently undertaking my Certificate 4 in Veterinary Nursing. I joined the team last July originally as Work Placement student before getting offered an employee position in October last year.

I absolutely love animals with my whole heart and have 2 fur babies of my own Maggie and Mabel. Ever since I was a little girl I have always loved being within the company of animals especially dogs who have always had an extremely special place in my heart. Although any cute face that comes into the clinic I immediately fall in love with no matter the species :)

My favourite part of nursing is forming a connection with every patient that comes into the clinic, weather they are just in for a quick visit or are a hospital patient. It’s my goal to make every animal feel as comfortable as possible throughout their time at Family Vets :)

Outside of nursing I absolutely love spending time with my friends and family and my doggies of course! I enjoy travelling and it is a major goal of mine to work all around the world as a veterinary nurse in the future!

We have our super cute and small patient Truffles in for a check up for respiratory issues. Chronic respiratory disease is common in all ages of rats and mice, which may be frustrating for the owners to treat. But little Truffles symptoms are mild today and we are expecting a good control. She is very friendly and her cuteness made our day 💕

Pyometra- infection of the uterus can happen to any female cats and dogs that are not desexed, most presentations we see are around 6 to 8 years of age, but we have seen ones as young as 6 months old.

The symptoms may include lethargy, fever, vomiting, inappetence, prolonged on heat stage, bleeding or smelly discharge from the back end.
The diagnosis include a full examination, cytology, bloodwork and xrays/ultrasound.

Most cases require immediate surgery or may risk the infection in the uterus to leak into the abdomen which then increases the mortality rate.

Luckily for Cleo after diagnosed with pyometra by a referral hospital on a Saturday afternoon, we were able to perform immediate surgery without the after hours/surgeon call out charges. She went home the next day happy and comfortable.
The affordability makes it another reason we were able to save another life.

We are able and equipped to perform most complicated surgeries including, not limited to: caesareans, GDVs, large tumour removals, pyometras and exploratory surgeries.
Picture below please view at your own discretion. One of the removed infected uterus. Others are of the happy Cleo after she went home.
