Tongues out Thursdays 😜 🐢

Ft Layla and Luna enjoying a sunny social walk 🌞

Somtimes one on one socialisation is best suited for a dog. This creates better neutrality and better control, as some dogs get way too over stimulated when their in a group setting.

This sort of socialisation allows the dog to practice appropriate behaviour and independence.

Dogs need to learn how to control their emotions around other dogs before allowing them to run off leash.

This is why we DO NOT RECOMMEND DOG PARKS TO SOCIALISE YOUR DOG. THIS IS JUST BAD PRACTICE AND TEACHES YOUR DOG ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. 99% OF DOG PARKS ARE UNREGULATED AND OUT OF CONTROL.

We recommend finding a doggie friend for your dog and go from there.

A big happy 3rd birthday to our boy Riley πŸ₯³ πŸŽ‰

Our boy Riley has been with us for over 2 years now, and what a journey it has been.

We have had some troubles along the way, with dog aggression, car reactivity, high prey drive, and human aggression.

Since we started, Riley has quite an extensive bite history now. Like many cattle dogs out there, Riley is very quick to tell you to F*** off if he doesn't like something. He is very quick to explode.

Riley was placed on medication a while ago, and even worse, the veterinarian even told his mum to put him down πŸ˜”.

Thankfully, he has now been off his medication for almost 2 years, and his mum decided not to listen to the vets advice and persevered with his training.

The sad part about Rileys behaviour is that a lot of it stems from genetics. All of his litter mates have actually been put down, and Riley is the only one left alive from his litter πŸ˜”.

We are so grateful that Riley is still with us as he is such a beautiful dog that just needed the right training and guidance.

A big massive shout out to .sitstayplay, who has worked with Riley for almost 2 years now. Riley wouldn't be here today if it wasn't for her.

Riley got to enjoy his birthday with some bacon and a puppacino β˜•οΈ πŸ₯“.

We love you, Riley 🐾

It's never easy when one of our beloved clients crosses the rainbow bridge 🌈

This beautiful girl was Latte, a 13 yr old Lab. She was such a beautiful soul and the sweetest girl.

She had the best 13 years of life, and we were so blessed that we got to be a part of it ❀️

We will miss you, Latte. we hope you are running a muck up there in doggie heaven πŸ’” πŸ™πŸΌ

A message from Sit Stay Plays owner Tayla πŸ’” 🐾

This week, my best bud crossed over the rainbow bridge 🌈

I just want to thank everyone for their kind messages and patience through this tough time ❀️

A lot of you may or may not know Cudi's story. Cudi was a real special boy. We struggled a lot together. We had plenty of downs and some really good highs.

Cudi struggled with high separation anxiety, and he was an overall very anxious boy from the very start. My husband and I structured our lives around him and gave him the very best life we could. So much hard work and tears went into this special boy. CUDI IS THE REASON I BECAME A DOG TRAINER.

Through the really hard times, i had some very dark thoughts, "This is way too much," "Should i put him to sleep?" "Man my life would be so much easier without him."

But we persevered and kept trying. Went through years of medication until i finally said enough is enough, we need to put some structure into this dogs life..

After years and years of hard work, we finally got him to a point where he could just enjoy his life.

If you are struggling with a hard dog out there, let me tell you, you are not alone. The struggle is real!!!!

RIP MY SPECIAL BOY, THERE WILL BE KNOW ONE ELSE LIKE YOU. I WILL MISS YOU EVERYDAY πŸ˜” πŸ’” 🐾

This week, we are going to talk about puppies 🐢 🐾

It is so important to get on top of training as soon as you get your new puppy.

Now, we're not talking about obedience. WE'RE TALKING, management, preventative, and exposure training. The earlier you do this type of training, the easier adulthood will become.

If you come across an issue with your puppy early, SEEK OUT A PROFESSIONAL TO HELP YOU. The earlier, the better!!!

Let's introduce some pups

πŸ“• Bear the GSD - Came to us at 12 weeks and is now 5 months. He has almost finished his walk and train program

πŸ“˜ Jada, the Australian Kelpie - a young puppy full of beans and needs help with her off switch. She has started her walk and train program.

πŸ“— Bailey, the Australian Kelpie - a beautiful doggo that just needed help with some basic foundational skills

πŸ“™ Buddy, 12 week old Labradoodle - Buddy has come across a few issues so far. Having such a strong food drive, he has displayed some resource guarding and some bad puppy mouthing. He has just started his 8-week walk and train program.

πŸ““ Shadow the working line GSD - only 16 weeks old, Shadow is a whole lot of dog. His mum is super committed, and we are about to start our 5 session private program.

πŸ“š Gracie and Sophie - New rescue pups to some very committed owners. Starting training the day they got these 2 home. We are half away through our 10 session private program.

βœ‹οΈ Every single one of these puppy owners reached out for training very early as they wanted to start off their puppies life right. IF YOU ARE CONSIDERING A NEW PUPPY, MAKE SURE YOU SEEK OUT ADVICE AND TRAINING AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE βœ‹οΈ

βœ‹οΈBENEFITS TO RAW FEEDING βœ‹οΈ

βœ…οΈ There is a growing trend towards feeding dogs a raw diet, which typically consists of raw meat, bones, and organs, as well as some fruits and vegetables.

βœ…οΈ When deciding to feed your dog a raw diet, it is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT that it is well balanced. If you feed your dog only raw meat, there can be great risks.

❌️ It's important to note that there are potential risks associated with feeding your dog a raw diet. Raw meat can contain harmful bacteria and parasites, and feeding your dog an unbalanced diet can lead to nutritional deficiencies. Additionally, some dogs may be at higher risk for complications from raw feeding, such as puppies, senior dogs, or dogs, with weakened immune systems.

🐢 Before starting your dog on a raw diet, it's important to consult with a veterinarian who can help you determine if it's the right choice for your dog and provide guidance on how to do it safely and appropriately.

βœ‹οΈ Wondering what breed is best for your family? βœ‹οΈ

There are so many dog breeds out there, some perfect for families, some perfect for work, some perfect for young couples, the list goes on.

As dog trainers, we see too many dogs being rehomed, surrendered, or even worse, put to sleep because families haven't done the research of which breed of dog would be best suited with children😒 .

**In our opinion, these are the breeds we think would best suit a family**

βœ‹οΈ SO YOUR THINKING OF ADDING A PUPPY TO YOUR FAMILY βœ‹οΈ

Picking the perfect puppy for a family requires careful consideration of several factors, and it should not be taken lightly.

By considering these factors and doing your research, you can find the perfect puppy for your family that will bring joy and companionship to your household for years to come. Remember, choosing a puppy is a big responsibility, so take the time to make the right decision for your family.

Trauma in dogs....

How many of our dogs have gone through a traumatic experience either when they were pups, younger dogs, or even older dogs.

Maybe they were attacked by another dog which turned into fear aggression, maybe they had a traumatic vet procedure which potentially turned into fear aggression towards humans or maybe it could be as simple as being left alone with bad weather and loud noises.

When our dogs go through these experiences, your dog might show signs and symptoms of stress, they might display leash aggression, lunging, barking at the trigger and sometimes result in biting to increase distance between them and the trigger.

Dogs that experience trauma will never be rid of that "file." A quote I heard from an animal scientist, Dr Temple Grandin, "YOU CAN OPEN A NEW FILE, BUT YOU CAN'T DELET THE OLD ONE"

So now you're thinking, how do I help my poor dog overcome this trauma? Through training, of course. Treatment generally centres on desensitization and counter-conditioning. Desensitisation is the process of exposing the animal in a safe, non-threatening environment to a low level of stimulus. We as trainers like to pair desensitisation with counter-conditioning, a process that changes the meaning of something bad to something positive.

We like to incorporate 5 LIFE SKILLS:

βœ”οΈ Loose leashing walking
βœ”οΈ Place Training
βœ”οΈ Crate Training
βœ”οΈ Sit - This means "sit" whenever asked and not move until I tell you. This behaviour isn't as solid as everyone thinks
βœ”οΈ Recall

These five life skills are our foundation to a well-balanced dog.

We never intentionally want to cause stress in our already triggered dogs. However, if we slowly over time help our dogs work through that stress and those emotions by making sure these life skills are solid, then you will help your dog overcome those fears.

I believe that once a dog experiences trauma, those triggers and fears will always be there. But, we can help dogs regulate those emotions via effective training.

Does your dog bark when someone comes to the door?

Do they rush up to guests and jump all over them?

Here’s what we recommend πŸ‘‡πŸ»

- Condition the place command. Give your dog an alternative job to do to avoid them from running up to the door when they hear the door bell ring or a knock. οΏ½
- In most cases it’s best to have a house line on your dog at all times to avoid the struggle of trying to leash them up when the unexpected package from the mail man arrives. This way your always able to have access to your dog when someone comes to the door. Grab the house line and pop your pooch on their place. οΏ½
- SET YOUR DOG UP TO WIN. When you know you’re having guests over, get your dog leashed up and ready to go before the guests arrive. Ask your guests to message you when they have arrived so you can begin training. οΏ½
- Get. Your. Reps. In. You need to be desensitising your dog to the sound of the door bell and knocking as much as you can. Create as many different scenarios as you can think of! This is the quickest and most efficient way to condition any new command/ behaviour you want from your dog.οΏ½
- Reinforce the behaviours we want from our dogs when the door bell rings or someone knocks. (laying down or sitting on their place bed, no barking, eye contact and engagement with you)οΏ½οΏ½If you’re struggling with any of the above, get in contact with a trainer for more guidance!οΏ½
and remember… PRACTICE, PATIENCE AND PERSISTENCE. 🐾

What breed of dog do you have? Are you fulfilling its biological needs?

How bloody cute is this pup right here ☝️ ☝️. Her name is Wagyu, and she is a Belgium Malinois X German Shepherd. What a whole lot dog she will be 😍.

Thanks to Wagyus mum and dad, she is starting off on the right foot with training. Maybe they weren't in the market for this breed of dog straight away, but things happen in life, and they are blessed with a beautiful pup.

Because of the type of breed she is, they started researching and know what is potentially in store for them. During our first training consultation, we spoke all about

βœ”οΈ Setting up rules and boundaries within the household
βœ”οΈ The importance of exposure and controlled socalisation for this particular breed of dog
βœ”οΈ The importance of engagement and early training
βœ”οΈ Genetics and natural instinct
βœ”οΈ The importance of super early impulse control training.

My question to you guys is, how many people out there actually RESEARCH DOG BREEDS BEFORE DECIDING ON A DOG? Unfortunately, from my experience, not many.

I believe if new dog owners only took the time to really research, I mean really research, we would have fewer dogs in shelters and more dogs living their absolute best lives.

Tips on how to decide which dog breed is right for you

βœ”οΈ Look at your own lifestyle first
βœ”οΈ Take note of what breeds are in your neighbourhood
βœ”οΈ Research breeds that you like. Make sure the characteristics and needs meet your life
βœ”οΈ Ask questions to fellow owner
βœ”οΈ Seek out professional advice. NOT JUST TO ONE, BUT MANY!

THIS IS NOT A TRY BEFORE YOU BUY INDUSTRY, DO YOUR RESEARCH.

5 TIPS FOR DOG TRAINING

TIP 1: Before giving your dog a command, stop and check if you are in a position to reinforce the behaviour once it’s completed, or correct if it’s not.
Example: Recall. Before calling your dog back to you, do you have something of value to reward them with when they return? Do you have a leash or long line on your dog to reel them in if they blow you off? (This applies both inside your home and outdoors!)

TIP 2: If your dog isn’t listening, have you taught them what they need to do? Are you in an environment that’s too distracting? If your dog isn’t understanding what you are asking of them, you’ll need to reassess your approach.

TIP 3: Reward improvement. You can always tighten up your dog training. Nothings perfect. Keep you dog willing to come back tomorrow by rewarding them today.

TIP 4: Get comfortable with telling people NO. Even to family members. More often than not, unwanted behaviours continue to occur due to strangers and family members interrupting your training. Tell them Aunty Liv said NO.

TIP 5: Make it easy. Make it fun. Show your dog how to win!!!

Training doesn’t stop after puppy school!

When you finished primary school, you moved on to high school. When you finished high school, some of you moved on to further education at university or TAFE.

Different stages of our dogs lives require different levels of training.

Relying solely on puppy school for your dogs training, will leave you with an adult dog and a puppy’s level of knowledge.

A reputable puppy school is there to teach you about the early stages of your puppy’s life (usually the first 6 months).

From there, it’s up to you to continue your dogs training! Whether you choose to train the dog yourself, or continue training with a trainer.

We highly recommend having a solid relationship with a trainer, and seeing them at least once or twice a year for maintenance training!

Meet Milo πŸ‘‹πŸ»

Milo was rehomed to Alyce & Nathan when he’s was 2 years old.

During his time in his previous home, Milo was put on medication due to anxiety. When arriving to his new home, Milo struggled with dog reactivity, lack of confidence, & just an overall fear of new experiences. This resulted in an inability to settle, both within the home & in new environments.

Alyce & Nathan’s goal was to help reduce Milo’s reactivity towards dogs, & have him be comfortable enough to be more apart of their day to day lives.

Alyce began training with us just over 12 months ago now, & has since shown what patience, dedication, & the right tools & knowledge can do.

Milo is a now 3 and a half years old, completely weaned off his medication & is regular at our Saturday morning group classes!

Milo will be joining our advanced group training program in October to work on fine tuning his obedience in a highly distracting environment.

Milo’s mum sent us some photos last week of Milo sitting with her at a cafe (see last two photos). This is something that brought a tear to our eyes!
Seeing this boy feeling comfortable enough in this type of environment overwhelms us with gratitude. Gratitude for our job & the clients we help on a daily basis, but also gratitude to Alyce & Nathan, for being incredibly dedicated and committed owners.

Well done guys πŸ‘πŸ»πŸΎπŸ₯Ή
