If off leash freedom is the goal for you and your dog (which it should be). Here a few things to focus on, in order to create a reliable off leash dog.
- PLAY!!!!!!!
- On leash practice (whatever you want off the leash, must be done on leash).
- Creating a neutral dog through in home behavioural practices, desensitisation and general counter conditioning to environmental stimuli.
The most important factor which pertains to off leash reliability is relationship, if your dog likes you more than a pile of poop, they will want to stick around you.
If you would like to cultivate off leash reliability with your dog, book a session today.

Stop treating your dogs like human baby’s. DOGS ARE DOGS. They communicate like dogs, they eat like dogs, they walk like dogs, they bark like dogs and do you know why ? BECAUSE THEY ARE DOGS. They are not children, they are not humans, they don’t need costumes, they don’t need a toy basket, they don’t need day care, they don’t need medication, they don’t need to eat 3 times a day, they don’t need their food cooked, they don’t need to sleep in your beds and they don’t need you to talk to them about your day.
What they do need is clear structures and rules within the home and a defined leader who protects them and makes sure everything in their life runs smoothly. This way your dog can enjoy walking off the leash, on the leash, running, playing, biting and doing things a dog would do. Rather than worrying about protecting their soft human who let’s them get away with being a complete and utter maniac within the home, and as a result becomes backyard bound because we as humans are to selfish to realise that we are raising a dog and not a toddler.

When you have a reactive dog you MUST be proactive. If you are passive, the situation will continue to worsen and the behaviour will become more deeply engrained.
Three things you can do to improve your situation are:
1. Having a marker word with strong reinforcement history.
2. Maintaining appropriate distance between your dog and the triggering stimulus.
3. Correct your dog when they react.
Set yourself up for success by knowing your dogs threshold, use high value treats to mark triggering situations and if your dogs threshold is past and they react, correct your dog to bring them back down to a level state of mind.
If you have a reactive dog, try these three things, if you would like a more hands on approach, book a session today 😊

Why is my dog reactive on the leash, but not off the leash ?
Well… what reason would you have to trust a driver without a license ?
Most people never learn, or are never taught how to properly handle a dog. As a result of this, they find themselves in stressful situations for both, dog and handler. After a few bad experiences, your dog quickly loses faith and trust in you as the driver and they begin to take matters in to their own hands. This generally manifests itself as some type of reactivity, which is only present when the dog is on leash.
When your dog is off leash, they are in control of what they d, so their stress level is dramatically decreased.

Dog anxiety medication (IN MY OPINION) is an absolute scam if I ever did see one. There are a few reason why anxiety in dogs is becoming so prevalent, and I’ll tell you right now, it’s not the dogs fault. Some main contributors to this issue are:
- Poor quality of breeding.
- Lack of education on the owners behalf.
- So called “Animal behaviourists”/ Vets (some, not all) who are way to quick to pull the anxiety medication trigger.
If we actually begin to do the right things with our dogs, satisfy our dogs need for freedom, structure and leadership then we would clearly see a decline in this issue. There are some outlier situations, where even I would admit that medication would clearly be an aid to the dog, and serve as a legitimate counterpart to rehabilitation. However, this is an outlier, this is not the mean.
If you go to a vet, dog trainer or animal behaviourist and they quickly suggest medication for your dog. I would SERIOUSLY question what this person actually knows about dog behaviour.
I could write multiple essays on this, but I’ll stop here.

The best thing you can do for a reliable recall, is to make sure it is actually 100% reliable with your trusty friend, the leash.
If I ask my dog to come 100 times and I make sure every time they are on the leash, that means 100 successful repetitions, and my dog will begin to learn they “MUST” come when called.
Make sure to set yourself and your dog up for success.
3 crucial tips for recall:
- Use a leash.
- Use high value rewards.
- Don’t repeat the command.
Dogs naturally recall, so in theory, this is should be everyone’s most reliable command as we do not have to teach it, we only have to improve upon what is already there.

If you have reactive dog, stop adding fuel to the fire by:
- Holding your dog back on a tight leash.
- Trying to reassure them with affection and affirmation.
- Sitting them when you encounter a dog.
Your goal should be to make the situation less stressful, not more. When you hold the leash, you are in control. That means your dog has to trust that you can handle every situation you encounter. If you are flip flopping all over the place and giving your dog 10 things to do, “sit, it’s okay, stop, NO, GOOD”, ect. You are making these encounters 10 x worse.

To give the our dogs the best life, we must know what kind of dog we have. If we want our dogs to flourish and be the best versions of themselves, we need train in a way that brings this out of them.
It is detrimental to place expectations of a previous dog, or your idea of what your dog should be like, onto your current dog. This never ends well. Accept the dog you have, work with their abilities, and don’t try to fit a square peg in a round hole. This will cause conflict, ultimately fragmenting the relationship.
KNOW YOUR DOG 🙏🏾

If you struggle to walk your dog on a nice loose leash, don’t underestimate the effect you, as the handler, have on the dog.
Presenting as a calm, strong and relaxed leader are just as important as any other tip when it comes to loose leash walking. If you are stiff, on edge, looking at your dog every second , gripping the leash ferociously, putting undue tension on the lead and constantly anticipating if there is going to be a dog, person, child ect coming around the corner, and you why wonder your dog is always on the precipice of a nervous breakdown? ITS BECAUSE YOU ARE TOO. The person who is holding the leash is someone the dog must trust. You wouldn’t want someone driving you around who didn’t have a licence, neither does your dog.

CHOOSING A DOG TRAINER
People often ask me what they should be looking for when selecting a dog trainer.
My criteria includes:
1. Experience solving your problem.
2. Displays work and ability with client dogs.
3. Shows the work they have done with their own dogs.
I hear so many horror stories of trainers my clients have gone to, and it truly breaks my heart. Generally these things can be avoided if you follow this criteria. If you’ve had a bad experience, don’t be disheartened. There are plenty of great trainers around who want the best for you and your dog 🐶 ☺️
