Easter Food to Avoid! 🐰⚠

As we celebrate with friends and family, and with special treats, its important to remember how we can keep our pets safe over Easter. Here are foods to keep away from your pets over easter:

🍫 Chocolate contains theobromine which can be toxic to animals and may cause cramps, diarrhoea, muscle tremors, seizures, vomiting and, in some instances, death.

🍞Hot cross buns containing currents, raisins and sultanas are toxic to dogs and can effect their kidneys. Common symptoms include vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, loss of appetite and increased drinking.

🐟Good Friday is when fish will be plentiful but the small bones in fish can obstruct airways, so avoid feeding your animals excessive amounts of fish.

For all emergencies over Easter please call SASH Prospect on 8609 9444.

"My name is Tara and this year I am hoping to run the TCS Sydney Marathon. In order to secure a place, I have chosen to raise funds for the Pets of the Homesless charity.

I am trying to raise $2400 and am just over half way!

If you are in the position to donate, I would be so grateful as not only will it secure my place for the marathon but it will also provide much needed funds to keep vulnerable people and their pets together during difficult times. Your donation can help:
- Provide pet food
- Provide veterinary care
- Provide safe shelter

I would be so grateful for any help!

Tara"

As we celebrate the end of the year and the begining of a new one, we should all keep our pets safe around new years fireworks πŸŽ‡πŸŽ†πŸŒ

Pets are more sensitive to loud noises, flashing lights and strong smells. Bring your pets inside and keep windows and doors closed, and find a safe spot for them in the house to wait or hide if they need to. Take your dog out for a good walk a few hours before the fireworks so they are ready to rest.

And for all animals, do not punish them for being fearful or skittish. Calm them and be attentive to their needs. If you are worried about your pet, talk to your vet about treatment for anxiety or noise phobias.

πŸš¨β˜€οΈ Beat the Heat! πŸš¨β˜€οΈ

The last few weeks have been very hot, and these heatwaves will continue over the summer. It's important to keep your pets safe, as heat stress can be very serious.

Signs of heat stress include: panting, vomitting, bright red gums, lethargy, uncoordination and in extreme cases seizures.

If you notice any of these symptoms in your pet ensure they have plenty of fresh cool water, modify walking/exercising to stay inside in the hottest part of the day, don't leave pets in cars, if pets are outside make sure there is adequate shade and keep them indoors when possible. Adding some ice to water bowls to keep them cool for longer is an extra tip for keeping animals cool.

A good rule of thumb is that if it's too hot for you, it's too hot for your pet. If you are concerned give us a call or visit the vet, and in after hours emergencies call SASH at 8609 9444.

Spring has sprung, and while you spring clean its also time for your pets own check in! Here are some spring reminders for your furry friends πŸŒΈπŸˆβ˜€πŸ©

1. The warmer weather often means more skin and ear issues for your pet, so keep an eye out for ear and skin infections and bring your pet in for a check up if your concerned!

2. Is your pet due for their vaccine or flea and worming treatment? Give us a call to check in, and book in an appointment or pick up a treatment.

3. If your tending to the garden make sure to keep fertilizers, insecticides and herbicides out of your pest ways. Also keep an eye on what is growing in your garden - many popular springtime plants, including rhododendron and azaleas are highly toxic to pets.

Our Top 3 Reasons for Desexing Cats 🐈🩺🩹

As a follow up to our post about desexing dogs, here are our top reasons to desex your cats!

1. Unwanted Kittens: Desexing of a female cat prevents unwanted kittens.

2. Other Health Issues: Desexing your cat can reduce the risks of some potentially serious health problems. For example, desexed cats are less likely to get mammary cancer and uterine infections. If your cats are allowed outside, desexing them also means they are less likely to be exposed to injury and infectious disease (such as FIV/feline AIDs).

3. Behaviour: Desexed cats are less likely to show aggressive behaviour than undesexed cats, and are less likely to fight with other cats in your household. It also means that if your cat is allowed to roam, they are less likely to fight with other neighbourhood cats. Desexed cats are also less likely to scent mark by spraying urine.
