We are thrilled to announce Tori Allen as the recipient of the 2025 VNCA Future Leader: Helen Power Scholarship!

Tori has been passionately dedicated to veterinary nursing since 2015, with a special focus on exotic animals and Australian wildlife. Since joining the Avian & Exotics Service in 2022, Tori has deepened her expertise in this field, embracing its unique challenges and rewards. She has also completed advanced training, including a veterinary professional course with Taronga Zoo and an Advanced Programme in Veterinary Nursing of Avian Species, showcasing her commitment to exceptional care for exotic patients.

Congratulations, Tori, on this well-deserved recognition! 👏

⚠️🌡️ Large parts of Australia are set to experience more high temperatures over the next week. High temperatures are expected in the greater Sydney area so it is very important to think about protecting our pets from these extreme temperatures.
The following points can help to keep your pet safe;

☀️Bring outside pets inside if possible

☀️If not possible to bring pets inside ensure their enclosure is in all day shade and place ice bricks around their enclosure

☀️Close blinds early in the day to keep your house cool

☀️Use fans to keep air moving or air conditioning if available

☀️Ensure they have plenty of cold fresh water

☀️Check them regularly for signs of heat stress; panting, laying on their side, lethargy
If your animal does appear to be affected by heat contact your vet immediately, as heat stroke can affect our small creatures very quickly

AVA UPAV conference has wrapped up! Great 3 days of learning, catching up with friends and colleagues, and sharing knowledge. Dr Izi gave a talk on some important challenges of treating bacterial infections in rabbits 🐰, while Dr Alex gave a talk on retrobulbar infections in guinea pigs which she saw during her internship at AVES.

AVES will be closed from 25th until 27th November. Dr Izi will be attending UPAV (Unusual Pet and Avian Veterinarians) Conference, while Nurse Tori takes a well-deserved break 🙂
