CatRescue 901

CatRescue 901 Based in Sydney, Australia we rescue homeless cats & kittens from the streets and pounds. Thanks to a generous bequest, in 2020 we issued over 800 vouchers.
(67)

We have a network of approximately 30 dedicated foster carers, 20 veterinary practices and we rehome via our website, 4 PETstock stores and Jiji's Rescue Cat Cafe CatRescue 901 is a Sydney based no kill organisation and registered not-for-profit, committed to rescuing, caring for and rehoming abandoned cats and kittens. Founded in 2006, originally as Catrescue NSW, our mission is to help combat an

d highlight the horrific number of cats and kittens abandoned on our streets and destroyed in council pounds each year. CatRescue 901 not only cares for helpless animals, but proactively tackles the source of the issue by campaigning for legislative change, and providing low-cost desexing, microchipping and community education. We strongly believe that the terrible number of companion animals killed each year in NSW can be prevented through cultural and legislative change. CatRescue 901 is committed to rescuing, caring for and rehoming abandoned cats and kittens from the streets and sometimes council pounds. We do our best to help the most vulnerable cats, rescuing the very young, elderly, sick, injured, blind, disabled and the abused while relying on the goodwill of the community and dedication of volunteers to achieve this vital work. Our network consists of approximately 50 dedicated foster carers, a small team of coordinators and approximately 20 veterinary practices across Sydney. We rehome our cats via our website and we are very fortunate to also rehome our felines through 5 PETstock stores. Our cats have all vetwork completed prior to adoption and in the event our adopters circumstances change and they are no longer able to care for them, we will always accept our cats back. DESEXING IS ABSOLUTELY VITAL TO REDUCE THE NUMBER OF ABANDONED AND UNWANTED FELINES. As funds allow, we issue desexing vouchers to promote responsible pet ownership and assist members of public to do their part in controlling the cat population problem. CatRescue 901 is a no kill organisation because every life is precious and every cat deserves a chance. This means that we are committed to doing the best for every cat in our care until their forever home can be found for them. Their paws are in our hands.

❀🐾🐈Feel Good Story - the Adoption story of a Shy cat (it's a long one!):

Ferrari came on board in August 2023 at 3 months of age, extremely shy, skittish and scared of everything except for one thing, other cats! Ferrari blossomed watching the resident cats, gaining confidence from them and started trusting his foster carers. He was hiding the fact that he was a Casanova and very smoochy boy.

A few months ago, we received this very lovely enquiry from a teenage girl who had been looking at his profile for a while and really liked him. She did not blink at the fact that there would be no point in a meet and greet, she accepted he would take the time he needed to settle in a new environment and that he would likely always remain a timid cat at best. She managed to convince her parents that he was the cat for them and well …. He truly has proven to be!

It hasn’t been easy and it has taken a long trial of a good few months, as his new friend Skye wasn’t all that pleased with his presence while Ferrari just really wanted to be her friend and share her space! Ferrari (now Arlo) knew very early on how special his young adopter was as he trusted her very quickly and showed her his very sweet and cuddly side. Whilst she is definitely his special person, he also loves cuddles with the rest of the family.

This teenage girl will have a special place in our hearts forever - not only did she want a rescue animal, but she went to bat for a cat who will always remain quite timid and nervous in many circumstances. She put in the hard yards to bond with him, at his pace and didn’t give in when her cat Skye was disgruntled and unhappy.

Sadly, shy cats are very hard to re-home. They take us, foster carers, a long time to get them ready (in some cases, years) for adoption and even then, they will often remain quite timid. They will never provide an instant connection and in meet and greets there is often no meet, nor greet. We so appreciate it when potential adopters understand this and trust us when we tell them of a cat’s potential. We will keep the trial open for as long as is needed for everyone to be 100% comfortable and provide guidance along the way. These cats deserve a chance too so a very big thank you to this wonderful young girl and her family!

If you’d be interested in adopting or foster caring for a shy cat, please get in touch as many aren’t on our website.

Nemo has just moved to his foster home with carer Mel. I think it’s fair to say he likes it there.

100% there will be a house full of biscuits made by him!!

Thanks to all involved getting him off the streets and thanks to Parkes Street Vet for letting us board him until we found a suitable carer.

We had a lovely update from Chesters owners this week. He was adopted a year ago and joined two siblings with the same colours, and the trio love each other.

From the owners - "Chester totally settled in perfectly with us and his brother Mustang and sister Lily.
They run, they rumble, play and investigate all the hours they are awake. "
"I know how hard it was to allow Chester to be adopted, but I cannot tell you how thrilled we are to have him. We love him to bits and he has completed our ginger ninja feline family."

Updates like these keep us going. Finding them all homes where they can flourish is the best feeling in the world. We are so overjoyed when we get updates, and although we can't post them all we try to do a few when we get a chance!

Have the life you greatly deserve Mr Chester!

Lenny came on board after he was found outside a home of one of our carers. He was a very scared and timid boy who had no chip and no owners!

He has come a long way already and his resident foster cats are helping him learn how to trust and be safe. This video is Balu teaching him where he stands and when to stop. (no cats were harmed in the making of this video 🀣)

He will be looking for a family (when he is ready) that can take the time for him to settle in and trust his new environment.

🐈 🐾 Our third intake this week is the beautiful Pollie. She was found on the streets and was too lovely that her finders had to help.

We have been able to assist some of these cats this week, due to Street Vet helping us with temporary boarding. Thank you to all our vets that help us help our cats!

Pollie is not yet ready for adoption, keep an eye on our website for when she is!

UPDATE - After much deliberating.......His name is Nemo! Thanks everyone for suggesting loads of great names!

Another boy on board this week! We are referring to him as Mr Ginga at the moment but he NEEDS A NAME!!

One of our volunteers found him and we just had to fit him in somewhere!!!

"Last week while trapping a heavily pregnant cat at a western suburbs park, mr ginger came and sat on my lap. I knew we had to help him. He’s awfully skinny, covered in lesions (which I think are suspicious), has a broken tail and someone has cut his whiskers off."

We got you big boy! Hit us with some name suggestions!

I first up want to say that we are all in this position to help animals. But, some charities put more emphasis on the animals than others. Food for thought for where your donations go.

RSPCA NSW's Financial Report for the 2023-24 financial year is out.
So it's time for this year's episode of 'How Rich is Scrooge McDuck - oops - RSPCA NSW?'
A handy $2.5 million in interest and dividends on its mammoth investment portfolio helped it to a $8.9 MILLION PROFIT for the year. Would have been higher except for a big (35%) increase in admin and fundraising costs, and $1.1 million in executive payments.
As of 30 June it had a $49 million share portfolio, and another $23 million in investment properties (including those up for sale). That's not counting the bank account.
So the answer is: pretty damn rich, especially for an organisation that does less and less every year.
(Remember all those "URGENT" pleas by RSPCA for donations - they are all BS).
We haven't seen the 2023/24 intake numbers yet, but its dog and cat intake has decreased massively over the past decade as RSPCA helps itself to the donation stream but leaves the real work to rescue.

Our Story

CatRescue 901 is committed to rescuing, caring for and rehoming abandoned animals from the streets and pounds. We rely on the goodwill of the community and the dedication of volunteers to do this vital work. Formed in 2006 (originally as Catrescue NSW) to help combat and highlight the horrific number of abandoned cats and kittens destroyed in pounds, CatRescue 901 not only cares for homeless animals, but proactively tackles the source of the issue by campaigning for legislation change, greater representation for animals, low cost desexing and microchipping, and community education. We strongly believe that the terrible number of companion animals killed each year in NSW can be prevented through cultural and legislative change. The solution lies with all of us to be mindful of our actions and make compassionate, but simple, decisions such as desexing. We offer subsidised desexing vouchers year round - depending on available funds We do our best to rescue the most vulnerable cats and kittens; rescuing the very young, elderly, blind, disabled and the abused We have partnered with PETstock and rehome through their Artarmon, Balgowlah, Belrose, Broadway, Dural and Mona Vale stores. This enables us to take stray kittens and also friendly cats off the streets and find them safe homes. We desex these kittens’ mums and find them homes if they are friendly. If they are not friendly these mums are desexed and returned into the care of the people feeding them. Every kitten and cat we rehome is vet checked, desexed, microchipped, vaccinated, worm and flea treated. We always accept back cats we have adopted at any time if their adopters are unable to care for them any more. CatRescue 901 does not operate a shelter. Instead we have a network of trained volunteer, foster carers who provide care for our cats in their homes. Most carers have one or two cats in their care and we have specialist carers who are trained to look after a mum with babies or litters of tiny bottle babies. All our carers are contractually bound to ensure our cats receive a very high standard of care. All our foster carers have unlimited access to our carer coordinators for ongoing support. Through our foster care program we have saved thousands of kittens and cats over the past 10 years. CatRescue 901 is a no kill organisation because every life is precious and every cat deserves a chance. This means that we are committed to doing the best for every cat in our care until their forever home can be found for them. CATRESCUE 901: Their paws are in our hands.
