Metamorphosis III

Through durational performance and installation, the Metamorphosis series imagines a utopian sanctuary where expanded gender identities can be explored without disruption - a dream of a space that protects and nurtures the process of self-discovery. Each work manifests as an intricate cobweb gradually spun in response to its site. Drawing inspiration from the sanctuary-building and metamorphic practices of insects, the series pays material homage to the protective function and transitional history embedded within silk thread.

Artist Statement:

'Saskia Shearer is a Gadigal-based percussionist whose creative practice pushes performative boundaries, towing the line between meditation and chaos. Experimenting with an array of instruments and found objects, Saskia creates texturally diverse sound sculptures that celebrate the versatility of percussion. She views her instruments as vessels for sound, movement, and stillness.

A recent graduate of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Saskia incorporates her classical training into her performances while rebelling against the constraints of tradition. As co-director and performer in the New Music group Chaos Collective, she collaborates on new compositions and improvisational works. Recent performances include shows with Chaos Collective at the Playback Festival in Brisbane and also at Sydney Fringe Festival with artist Belinda Yee for ‘Sound as Form.

Saskia’s work explores the interplay between sound, space, and audience experience. Her performances emphasise the physicality of sound and celebrate stillness as a necessary element of expression. She approaches her performances as ritualised acts, creating immersive experiences that invite reflection and connection.'

Artist Statement:

'Damia O’Loughlin is a jazz wind instrumentalist, improviser, conductor, and educator. She is currently studying a Bachelor of Music (Music Education) Musicology with Honours at the Sydney Conservatorium of music. As a member of Spectra Jazz Orchestra, she has performed at events and venues across Sydney including the Sydney International Women's Jazz Festival, Lazybones and the Marrickville music Festival.

Furthermore, she has conducted and performed with the Sydney University Wind Orchestra. Damia is deeply passionate about the power of music to connect, tell stories and inspire social change and aims to express these values in her research and artistic practice.'

Artist Statement

Belinda Skyring is an emerging artist working in Sydney and the Hawkesbury region. In 2022 Belinda graduated from the National Art School in Sydney with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, majoring in painting and drawing. She also holds a Bachelor of Design from Western Sydney University (1992) and was a senior designer in various design firms in Sydney for over 20 years. If walls could talk is Belinda’s first solo show since graduating from NAS.

In her work Belinda explores the materiality of paint and mixed media. She uses charcoal, spray paint, oil stick, acrylic and oil paint on large unstretched canvases placed on the studio floor. A range of tools including spray bottles, brushes, mops, brooms, squeegees, scrapers, palette knives and paint rollers are used to create many layers which are both added and subtracted at various stages. An instinctual process of reactive gestures and manipulation of materials creates a history of marks representing everyday surfaces and their interaction with daily life. In this abstract space Belinda explores the junction between process and meaning, where layers of marks and textures act like an urban fossil capturing the history of inhabitants within a familiar place.

Artist Statement:

'Maddy Briggs is an electroacoustic musician, screen composer and instrumentalist based in Sydney. A graduate of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, her practice centres upon the digital elaboration and explosion of acoustic instruments, weaved together into textural, ambient soundscapes. She performs on electric bass in new music ensemble .official.

Her work has been performed at 2019 VIVID Sydney, MUSLAB’s 2024 International Electroacoustic Music Festival, and has been aired on SBS On Demand, BBC Music 6 and the Classical:NEXT-longlisted HiberNATION Festival.'
