Koby - a cautionary tale this Easter 🐾🍫

Koby is Dr Katie’s dog, who forgot to read his mum’s textbooks 📚 and learn that chocolate is highly toxic to dogs 🐕, and helped himself to a large quantity of Easter chocolate 🍬. Luckily, Dr Katie did read those books, and sprang into vet mode 🩺. After doing the calculations 🧮, a late-night trip into work was required to make him vomit up the offending chocolate 🤢. Once he had brought it up, he was given a dose of activated charcoal ⚫️ to help bind any chocolate that might have already left his stomach. Luckily, Koby ate this without too much hassle 😅.

Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, both of which are toxic to dogs 🐶 and cats 🐱. Dark chocolate has the highest concentration 🍫, and white chocolate has the least 🤍. The toxic dose is dependent on the dog’s size. Depending on these variables, clinical signs can range from none 🚫, to vomiting 🤮 and diarrhoea 💩, tremors 😬 and seizures ⚡, and in severe cases, comas and death 💔. We have access to calculators that can work out the likely outcome to suggest appropriate action to take 🏥. In many cases, this will be similar to Koby’s experience. The sooner we can treat, the better the prognosis 🩺✨.

Koby is doing great 🐾 and has learnt little from his experience 🤦🏼‍♀️ – he will continue to eat whatever smells good 😋. Please note that the first photo was done under strict veterinary supervision (his mum 👩‍⚕️) and we do not recommend staging photos like this and tempting fate ⚠️.

If your dog gets into your Easter stash 🍫🐾, please call our reception team 📞 for advice on (02) 9810 7544 or contact your closest 24-hour hospital 🏥 if we are closed.

Working hard, or hardly working?

Either way, raising money for a good cause 💰and supporting local businesses 📈

Dr Jason recently participated in Balmain Sports Medicine’s annual charity golf day🏌️‍♂️ Raising funds for The Prostate Cancer Foundation. Balmain Vet Hospital even sponsored a hole on the picturesque course for the day ⛳️

Despite it being for charity, and all being winners 🏆 Dr Jason made sure we all knew his team came in second place 🥈

We’re excited to announce, that from today, April 1st we’re able to offer veterinary treatment to all species of cats now. Not just domestic cats. Today we had our first Sumatran Tiger, Fluffy, in having a dental and it was a big success 🦷🪥

To keep things safe, all big cats must be kept on a leash or in an appropriate carrier while in the waiting room area. This will be enforced regardless of how friendly they may be 🐅🐾

Please call our reception team if you’d like to make a booking 📲

Life is just better with your bestie 👯‍♀️👯

We love when siblings and best friends get to come to the clinic together. We’ll always aim to keep them together as much as possible during their stay with us, as it gives many animals comfort and a sense of safety when in an unfamiliar setting 🥰

Does your pet have a best friend they can’t live without? Can be animal 🐶, human 👦 or toy 🧸?

Could these photos BE any more cute? (IYKYK)

Double trouble 👯Tigerlily and Chewbacca were in to see Dr Steve last week for dental procedures🦷🪥 Despite their small size, they were incredibly brave for their surgeries and were so sweet supporting each other throughout the day.

Don’t let their expressions fool you, their photo op with Dr Steve was fully consented to and they loved the TLC they received from all our staff through the day ❤️🤗

HOME SAFE ID MICROCHIP UPDATE ‼️

Some of you may have heard about a large microchipping registry that has recently gone into liquidation.

Fortunately this should have minimal impact on most NSW 🐶🐱registered pets as we routinely use the government run NSW Pet Registry. However if your pet was microchipped and registered outside NSW or from a rescue or breeder that did use HomeSafe ID, once their website 👩‍💻becomes inaccessible, there may be no way to track their chip details.

Please check that your pets are registered with any other registry aside from HomeSafe ID. At present you are still able to search on the website, so you’re able to check if that’s where your pet is registered. Once this website goes down, this will not be possible 🚫

Even if you know they are not registered with HomeSafeID this is the perfect time to check that their details are all up to date so if they do manage to get separated from you, they can easily be reunited 🤗

If you are concerned please contact our reception team 📞 so they can advise you on the best way to check your pets details are up to date ✅

When you’re too cute to catch treats, but you try your best anyway 🍪😅
Minnie is an adorable 6 month old border collie who provided us with a lot of entertainment and cuddles. Her complete obsession with treats was at odds with her catching skills…but don’t worry Minnie we still love you 🥰🥰

✨BRAVE BONNIE ✨

Bonnie is a familiar face at our vet clinic, but this week was a bit more routine for our lovely girl 🐾. She came in for a dental procedure after we noticed generalized tartar buildup and gingivitis (inflammation of the gumline) on most of her teeth (swipe ➡️ to see a picture) 🦷. Luckily for Bonnie, her wonderful owners didn’t hesitate to schedule the procedure 💖.

Did you know that Greyhounds require special considerations when it comes to anesthesia and surgery? Some Greyhounds have a condition called Fibrinolytic Syndrome, which can lead to excessive bleeding following surgery or trauma 🩸. They can also experience electrolyte imbalances during prolonged anesthesia and significant changes in body temperature 🌡️.

Because of these risks, we take extra precautions when treating our Greyhound patients. We often start them on medication to help prevent bleeding disorders and perform additional blood tests before and during their procedure 💉.

Our skilled vets and nurses are there to monitor your pups from start to finish 👩‍⚕️👨‍⚕️. Just like Bonnie, they’ll be treated to cozy warm blankets and as many cuddles as they need during recovery 🛏️💞.

Bonnie is now back home with her family, showing off her sparkling clean, pearly white teeth (swipe ➡️) ✨, ready for her next adventure 🚀. We can’t wait to see her again (but hopefully not too soon!) 👋.
