☀️ **Heatstroke Warning for Dogs!** 🐾

As temperatures rise, it’s crucial to keep our furry friends safe from heatstroke. Dogs can overheat quickly, especially during outdoor activities. Brachycephalic breeds (like Bulldogs, French Bulldogs, Pugs, and Shih Tzus) are particularly at risk due to their short noses, which makes it harder for them to cool down.

🔸 **Symptoms of Heatstroke:**
- Excessive panting
- Drooling
- Weakness or lethargy
- Vomiting
- Collapse

🔸 **Prevention Tips:**
- Provide plenty of fresh water and shade.
- Limit exercise during peak heat hours.
- Be extra cautious with brachycephalic breeds—keep them cool and indoors during hot weather.
- Never leave your dog in a parked car!

If you notice any signs of heatstroke, please bring your dog straight down and call us on (02) 9810 7544. Let’s keep our pups cool and safe this summer! 🌊🐶

At his consultation, we made sure Baxter is growing up healthy and happy, with all the care he needs to thrive. He’s already showing off his adorable, wrinkled face and sweet demeanor. 💕

📸📸 One photo of Freddie just wasn’t enough 📸📸

Freddie came in for his third puppy vaccination recently and we were all a bit smitten by the time he left the building.

Weighing in at 17kg at just 17 weeks old 😱 we’re guessing he won’t fit on the consult room table much longer.

He was given a clean bill of health 🩺 and along with many treats and cuddles received his third and final puppy vaccine 💉

Welcome to the Balmain Veterinary Hospital Family Freddie ❤️

🐾 Case of the week: Dougy – who needed a little help with his breathing! 🐾

Dougy came in for his puppy vaccinations a few months ago, and during his routine health checks, Drs Aimee and Katherine noticed a condition called stenotic nares 🐽 This is when the nostrils are narrower than normal, which can reduce airflow into the upper airways. It’s a common condition in brachycephalic (short-nosed) breeds and is part of a syndrome known as Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS).

Stenotic nares can lead to a variety of issues, including low blood oxygen levels, an increased risk of heatstroke, exercise intolerance, general breathing difficulties, and even snoring 💤.

Due to these issues it was recommended that Dougy undergo surgery to widen his nostrils during his desexing procedure. By improving airflow, this surgery reduces the risk of complications associated with BOAS.

Yesterday, Dougy underwent both castration and nares surgery with Dr. Steve. Both procedures were done under the same anaesthetic and went smoothly. If you swipe ➡️ you can see before, mid and after pictures of his nostrils! By the time he got home that afternoon, Dougy was breathing easier and feeling much more comfortable!

BOAS is common in many dog (and cat) breeds, including French Bulldogs, Pugs, Cavaliers, Boxers, and more. This procedure can significantly improve their quality of life, providing long-term comfort 😎.

If you’re concerned that your dog (young or old) might have stenotic nares, call us to make an appointment with one of our veterinarians for an assessment: (02) 9810 7544 ☎️.

❓What was in Raffy’s ear? 👂

Raffy was having a wonderful time at his family’s farm this week, until he suddenly became very painful in his right ear. Raffy normally loves a good ear scratch, but when he started crying instead his owners knew something was up 😱

When he came to see us, he was very sensitive in just one of his ears, yet only had a very mild yeast infection. Something didn’t add up 🤨Dr. Kayleigh then performed an otoscopic exam to look down his ear canal, and it looked like there was something unusual down there 🔬 He was too sore to examine fully, so we brought him back the next day for pain relief and sedation. 💉🕵️‍♀️

Once he was nice and relaxed we used our special video otoscope to confirm a foreign object in his ear canal and then some very small forceps to successfully remove it. What came out surprised us, as it was much bigger than we anticipated. Swipe across to see the culprit ➡️➡️

Raffy recovered beautifully from his sedation, and instantly was feeling better after his procedure. He’s gone home with some pain relief and medication to clear up his infection. We can’t wait to see him back for his recheck in two weeks 🐶🐾

🦷 **Attention Cat Owners!** 🐾

Have you heard about feline oral resorptive lesions (FORLs)? These painful conditions can affect your kitty’s teeth, leading to discomfort
and dental issues. 😿

During Ember’s check up we identified potential evidence of FORLs and recommended a dental procedure. As you can see in the picture of her tooth she has a pink area on the tooth itself. During the dental procedure we x-rayed Ember’s mouth and carefully checked for these lesions. We then unfortunately need to extract these painful teeth. Early detection is crucial for effective treatment and to keep those purrs coming!

If you notice changes in your cat’s eating habits or any signs of oral discomfort, don’t hesitate to contact us on (02) 9810 7544!
