This is Lola - an adorable 13 week old Cavalier King Charles 🐶. When she first went home with her mum she had really bad diarrhoea 💩. After analysing a faecal flotation, she was diagnosed with Giardia infection. Giardia is a small parasite that can be transmitted by contact with contaminated food and water, and is a relatively common cause of diarrhoea and weight loss in puppies 😢. After treatment with an antiparasitic medication, Lola is fully recovered and back to work! 🥳🐶🐾

Grub’s not so fun adventure 🐀🐶
Grub initially came in to see Dr. Katherine for being ‘not quite right’ and urinating blood. After a thorough history and physical exam she performed a blood test and brief ultrasound on him. 🩸🩸 This test showed that his blood was not clotting and that his red blood cell count was dangerously low. Dr. Katherine also found that he was spontaneously bleeding into his abdomen. Turns out Grub had managed to find and eat some rat bait! 🐀🐀 Rat baits work by preventing blood from clotting, which leads to bleeding, as is the case with Grub. 😢😢

We are lucky enough to work very closely with and were able to refer him to their emergency department for a blood transfusion, close monitoring and repeat blood work. After 24hrs of hospitalisation Grub was able to go back home to his family. He had a follow-up appointment with Dr. Katherine 3 days after his initial visit and his red blood cell and clotting count are normal!! Despite having normal values now he will need ongoing vitamin K therapy (to help his blood clot) for another 3 weeks and another blood test before we can officially say he’s out of the woods. 🐶🐶

Rat bait is very toxic to dogs and we recommend not having it where it can be accessed by your pets. If, however, they do manage to eat some, please give us a call on 9810 7544 and bring them straight down so that we can make them vomit and discuss ongoing management. 📞📞

Handsome Kito now has clean teeth 🦷 🪥
Kito came into and had a free health check during one of his recent stays. Dr. Aimee noticed that Kito had a build up of tartar on his teeth and recommended a dental procedure. During his stay we anaesthetised Kito, took an x-ray series of his teeth and performed a scale and polish. Swipe ➡️ to see before and after pictures of his teeth and images of the 🦷 x-rays. Cats are prone to getting FORLs (feline oral resorptive lesions), which can sometimes cause disease under the gum line, but Kito had very healthy and now clean teeth 😸🦷🪥

☀️☀️☀️HOT DAYS!!! TAKE CARE OF YOUR PETS ❤️🐶😻☀️☀️☀️

・・・
Mia and Hamish love the beach, but today and tomorrow, they’ll be staying indoors.
Although the beach is a great place for us to cool off, for dogs this isn’t always the case.

Dogs self-regulate their body temperature through panting and in the humid and hot weather, this becomes more difficult, especially post swim.

Ground temperatures can soar resulting in burnt paw pads when walking on hot sand or ground. So ensure you check the temperature of the ground with the back of your hand before letting your dog walk on the ground.

Do not leave your pet in the car or in the direct sun. Keep your pet in a cool place, ideally indoors, out of the sun, and ensure they have access to plenty of fresh water.
Brachycephalic breeds (bulldogs, pugs etc) are higher risk of heat stroke in this weather.

If your pet is showing signs of lethargy, excessive panting, is unsettled and/or feels hot, please contact us immediately.

Today is the day that we recognise them publicly but every day is vet nurse day at Balmain! They are the cornerstone of patient care and speak up for your furbabies when a bark or meow isn’t enough. 😻🐶

We continue to acknowledge the important role our nurses play within Balmain, which many of our clients appreciate greatly already. But today, on vet nurse day, we say thank you 🙏🏼😁🥰

Let’s talk puppy teeth 🦷
Does your puppy LOVE to chew on your hands and furniture? More than you would expect for their age?
They might have base narrow canines (BNCs), like Frankie!
BNCs are when the two lower canines are hitting the roof of the mouth due to an abnormality in the shape of their jaw. As you can see if you swipe ➡️, every time Frankie closes her mouth she is biting herself (*ouch*)! So instead of chewing on the roof of her mouth constantly she chewed on mums hand to relieve her pain! 🤕

We recommend getting these baby teeth extracted so that the adult teeth have more space to grow into and to make pups like Frankie feel more comfortable. This is followed by ball therapy once the adult teeth erupt to encourage them to grow outwards into their normal position (swipe ➡️ to see more info)

BNCs is something we check for at every puppy visit but if you’re concerned please call us at (02) 9810 7544 📞

Mischievous Murphy 🤪🐶
Murphy’s mum came home and noticed her cheeky boy had managed to eat an ENTIRE loaf of raisin toast while she was gone! 🍇🍞 Luckily she knew that raisins (and sultanas & grapes) are toxic to dogs so brought him straight down! 🏃🏼‍♀️🐶

Unfortunately, the grape family doesn’t have a known safe quantity that can be eaten. 😢 It can vary from dog to dog whether they will go into acute kidney failure. The first step in treatment is making your pet vomit to reduce the amount absorbed. 🤢

Dr Aimee and Murphy’s mum discussed the potential risks and decided it was best to treat him by making him vomit what was left in his stomach, placing him on fluids and administering activated charcoal. He came back a few days later for a blood test and thankfully has been given the all clear! Scroll ➡️ to see how excited Murphy was for his activated charcoal mixed with food! We had to place a makeshift bib so he wasn’t covered in black after his meal 🤪

If your pet ever eats anything out of their normal diet please call us at 📞02 9810 7544 to discuss if it is potentially toxic 😊

🦴Concerned about your dog’s arthritis? 🦴
Have you heard of Beransa? 😄

Zara’s owners have noticed a definite all-round improvement in her mobility since starting the injections.

Beransa is a new injectable pain killer for arthritis in dogs. It works by blocking the pain pathways and we have found it is very effective in the majority of patients.

In some instances we’ve even been able to reduce and wean off other pain relief medications with potentially harmful side effects. Check in the comments to see some videos of the positives effects of Beransa.

If you think your pet would benefit from this treatment please call to book in with one of our vets. 📞
