💚Food Aggression💚 Whilst food aggression is something that can definitely be built by creating conflict over food, there is certainly a strong genetic component when it comes to food aggression. This is not to say that a dog that does not have a genetic predisposition to displaying food aggression will never do so, or that a dog with a genetic predisposition for it ever will do so. It simply means that it will take less to trigger a response from those that are genetically more likely to display food aggression. Giving up their food is not something any animal does willingly, so creating any conflict such as taking food away, interfering with their food or interfering with them whilst eating, may lead to a display of food aggression. We tend to put unrealistic expectations on our dogs when it comes to their food. The majority of us would not react so kindly to someone reaching over and putting their hands in our pasta, taking away our plate when it was only half finished or trying to take the cake out of our mouth half eaten. But many expect their dog to tolerate sticking your hand in their food bowl whilst eating, picking up their bowl whilst eating and giving up the bone they are currently eating. So how can you avoid creating conflict?
