Top Tip 3

Cats and dogs has very sensitive hearing and the loud fireworks can be super scary for them, and if it is to loud it can cause hearing loss. Make sure your pet is in a confined, secure area that will prevent them from escaping.

Most pet escapes happen during thunderstorms or on New Years Eve.

Top Tip 2

Don`t feed your pet any leftovers. Our food is often too spicy and fatty for our four-legged friends and can cause problems ranging from an upset stomach to pancreatitis. Any cooked bones are a no-no as they can splinter, and small bones can cause an obstruction in the intestinal tract.

Our Top Tips to keep your pets safe this holiday season

Top Tip 1

Hang your Christmas tree decorations up high so your pet can`t reach them. Pets love to play with baubles and tinsel but they can harm your pets digestive system if consumed. Baubles can also break and hurt your pet.

Be vigilant, the snakes are out and about!🐍

Be vigilant, the snakes are out and about!🐍

🚨**ALERT**🚨

🐍 Please be aware that snake encounters are once again becoming more frequent as the weather begins to warm up in many parts of Australia. All bites (including suspected bites) should be regarded as life-threatening.

Signs of a snake bite in pets include:

☠️ Sudden weakness or collapse, which may be followed by transient improvement
☠️ Vomiting
☠️ Laboured breathing
☠️ Paralysis, starting with the hind legs
☠️ Loss of bladder and bowel control
☠️ Shaking or twitching of the muscles
☠️ Blood in the urine

Snake bites are a time critical emergency and if your dog or cat has been bitten by a snake, immediate veterinary assessment is recommended in all cases. It is vital that you keep your pet calm and as still as possible. Try to limit any movement (including walking) where possible and transport them to your nearest veterinary practice immediately, even if they look well. If possible, the veterinary clinic should be phoned to alert them that you are on the way. The sooner your pet is treated, the better their chances of survival.

❌ DO NOT try to catch or kill the snake for ID or for any other purpose
❌ DO NOT apply a tourniquet
❌ DO NOT wash the bite site
❌ DO NOT cut, suck or apply any other treatments to the bite-site

Whilst veterinary treatment of snakebite can be lifesaving, it can be very costly in many cases. This is especially true if antivenom is required or if secondary complications from the bite occur. Pet insurance provides peace of mind and protection in the event that your pet is ever bitten. Our platinum sponsor Bow Wow Meow Pet Insurance are currently offering two months free pet insurance in the first year of coverage for Animal Poison Helpline followers. Visit https://bowwowinsurance.com.au/poisons/ and enter AP368 at checkout to take advantage of this offer.

Regular deworming is essential for the health of your dogs and cats. Parasites like roundworms, hookworms, and tapeworms can cause a variety of health issues, from digestive upset to more severe conditions like anemia or organ damage. They can also pose a risk to human health, especially in children, as some parasites are zoonotic (transmissible to humans).

A veterinarian-recommended deworming schedule ensures that your pets are protected based on their lifestyle, age, and exposure risk. Puppies and kittens often require more frequent treatments, while adult pets typically benefit from regular preventive measures every three months. Come to Thornleigh Vet for a tailored deworming plan to keep your pets and family safe and healthy.

Meet Dr Duncan Thomson

He is a local boy having grown up in the area (his mother was a local real estate agent). He brings with him a background of over 25 years’ experience in veterinary and pharma life sciences.

Graduating as a veterinarian (BVSc, Syd), and then with a Masters of Business Administration (MBA UK) he progressed from seeing patients in Australian and the UK, to senior management positions in Europe, North America and Australia in both big pharma and biotech.

Duncan has substantial global experience in managing, sales and marketing, research, trials, successful regulatory approvals, product launches, and licensing and alliances. He worked previously at Novartis Animal Health in Switzerland, the US and Australia, and for the last 10 years, Duncan has worked in biotech in Australia holding successful management roles in Regeneus, Captixbio, Culturon, and consulting including advisory roles at the Australian Veterinary Association (incl. Chair of the Vets in Industry), Headway Animal Health, and the Australian Regenerative Medicine Institute (ARMI). In addition to this he continues to see clinical veterinary cases.

Duncan is often seen walking Maxie - a Cavoodle; is “tolerated” by Buttons the cat; and “loved” by 2 (school-aged) children and his wife.

Puppy school is essential because it helps puppies develop critical socialization skills during their "socialization window," which typically lasts until about 16 weeks of age. During this period, puppies are especially open to learning about new environments, people, and other animals. Proper socialization at this stage reduces the risk of fear-based behaviors or aggression later in life, setting the foundation for a confident and well-adjusted adult dog.

Meet our Head Nurse

Naomi Hinsby

As a dedicated veterinary nurse with four years of experience, I am deeply committed to providing the highest standard of care for animals. My love for animals drives me to ensure they receive the best health care possible, and I take pride in being a compassionate advocate for their well-being.

When I’m not caring for furry friends, you can find me immersed in my passion for arts and crafts—whether I’m painting or crocheting, creativity brings me joy. Sharing my life with my two beloved cats inspires me daily and reminds me of the special bond we have with our animal companions. I am excited to continue my journey in veterinary care, helping and healing animals every step of the way.
