Happy New Year! Dr Spot wishes a very happy new year and would like to share some tips to keep your pets safe this evening

1. Create a Safe Space
Set up a quiet, secure area in your home where your pet can retreat if they feel scared or anxious. Include their bed, favorite toys, and some treats. Keep the lights dim and curtains drawn to minimize the impact of fireworks.

2. Use Calming Aids
Consider natural calming aids like pheromone diffusers, anxiety wraps, or veterinarian-recommended calming supplements. For pets with severe anxiety, consult your vet for advice on medication or additional support.

3. Keep Them Indoors
Never leave pets outside during fireworks. Even in fenced areas, loud noises can cause them to panic and attempt to escape. Ensure doors, windows, and fences are secure to prevent them from running away if startled.

4. Distract with Background Noise
Play soft music, white noise, or turn on the TV to help mask the sounds of fireworks. Familiar sounds can provide comfort and reduce stress.

5. Update ID Tags and Microchips
In case your pet does manage to escape, make sure their ID tags are up to date and their microchip information is current. This will help reunite you quickly if they get lost.

By preparing ahead, you can ensure your pets stay safe and feel secure during the festivities.

๐ŸŽ„Safe & Sound: Holiday Tips for your Pets๐ŸŽ„

With Christmas now 1 sleep away, it is important to hatch a plan to keep your pets safe. Here's some tips on what to keep in mind over Christmas:
๐ŸŽ DO NOT OFFER TABLE SCRAPS OR HUMAN FOOD TO YOUR PETS! Many human foods can be toxic or harmful to your pets. It is best to rule out human foods entirely.
๐ŸŽ ONLY OFFER YOUR PETS PET-SAFE TREATS! Offer your pets treats from reputable pet stores, vet clinics and companies. If you are to make your own treats, please ensure you follow a recipe from a good source and avoid foods that are toxic to pets.
๐ŸŽ KEEP DECORATIONS AND PRESENTS OUT OF YOUR PETS REACH! Avoid keeping presents and decorations in spaces where pets can access them, as curious pets will likely chew or ingest the decorations, wrapping, ribbons or contents - risking ingesting a foreign body, toxin or sharp object.
๐ŸŽ AVOID LIGHTING SCENTED CANDLES OR DIFFUSERS! Diffusers and scented candles use essential oils, many of which are toxic to our furry and feathered friends. Additionally, open flame and pets are never a good mix!
๐ŸŽ PREPARE YOUR GUESTS AND PETS FOR THE VISIT! Set some house rules with your guests prior to your gathering, ensuring guests shut gates and doors to avoid your pet escaping. Ensure your guests know the limits of your pets social comfort, to avoid unnecessary stress and exercise your pet prior to your guests arriving to reduce their stress (provided the weather is not too hot).

Have a wonderful Christmas everyone! If you believe you are experiencing an emergency over the Christmas Public Holidays, please contact your nearest emergency vet hospital for aid. We will reopen for our normal hours on Friday the 27th of December.

โ˜€๏ธ KEEPING YOUR PET COOL IN SUMMER โ˜€๏ธ

With the weather heating up, the risk of heatstroke in pets increases dramatically. Luckily, there are things we can do to help reduce the risks.

โ€ข ALWAYS have fresh and cool water available for your pets, ideally from multiple sources (several bowls through the house, cat water fountains, etc.)
โ€ข Avoid exercising your pets in the heat, take them out for a walk in the early morning or late evening before the day heats up.
โ€ข Be aware of the warning signs of heatstroke. Our previous post lists the symptoms.
โ€ข Ensure your pets have access to shade/cover if they are outside.
โ€ข Create a cross draft/ventilation through their pen or through the house. Animals pant to cool down, ensuring there is good airflow will help them cool down quicker while panting.

If you believe your pet may be suffering from heatstroke, act fast and get them into a veterinarian as soon as possible. Our team at Dr Spot is always willing to help, contact us on (02) 4628 5055 if you would like any advice or assistance with your pet's needs.

โ˜€๏ธ Heatstroke, what to look out for in your furry friends โ˜€๏ธ

With the weather heating up, the risks of heatstroke in our pets increases dramatically. This condition can be deadly if you don't act fast and know the warning signs!

โ˜€๏ธ Signs of Heatstroke โ˜€๏ธ
โ€ข Noisy, open-mouthed breathing, often rapid with a lot of effort.
โ€ข Excessive drooling.
โ€ข Restlessness, agitation and disorientation.
โ€ข Vomiting and diarrhoea.
โ€ข Bright red gums, nose, tongue and in lighter-skinned patients their skin can also be bright red.
โ€ข Lethargy and potential collapse without being responsive.
โ€ข In severe cases, seizures, coma and death.

๐Ÿฉบ What to do if your pet has heatstroke ๐Ÿฉบ
โ€ข Remove your pet from the hot environment immediately.
โ€ข Apply cool water from the tap to your pets fur, focusing on the paws, tail and lower abdomen.
โ€ข Put them into a shaded and cool area, ideally with a fan directed at them or air conditioning on.
โ€ข SEEK VETERINARY ATTENTION. Even if you believe your pet is recovering, heatstroke is an emergency case and can result in lifelong damage or death.

๐ŸŽƒ๐Ÿพ Halloween Safety Alert for Pet Owners in Australia! ๐Ÿพ๐ŸŽƒ

As Halloween celebrations become more popular here in Australia, itโ€™s essential to keep our furry friends safe and comfortable during the spooky season. Here are some important reminders for keeping your pets safe:

๐Ÿง Beware of Candy Hazards
Chocolates, lollies, and sugar-free treats containing xylitol are toxic for pets! Store all sweets well out of reach, and remind children and guests to keep candy away from pets. Even wrappers can pose choking risks.

๐Ÿง™โ€โ™‚๏ธ Costumes Arenโ€™t for Every Pet
While pet costumes might be cute, many cats and dogs find them uncomfortable or distressing. If you do dress up your pet, make sure the outfit is loose-fitting, allows full movement, and doesnโ€™t have small parts they could chew.

๐Ÿ‘ป Create a Calm Space
Halloween night can bring unexpected noise and excitement, which can be overwhelming for pets. Set up a quiet, comfortable space where they feel safe and wonโ€™t be stressed by doorbells, strangers, or spooky decor.

๐ŸŽƒ Pet-Safe Decorations
Candles, small decorative items, and string lights can be dangerous if chewed on or knocked over. Keep decorations out of reach and be mindful of anything that could harm curious paws and noses.

๐Ÿšช Prevent Runaways
With more foot traffic and frequent door openings, there's a higher risk of pets slipping out. Keep pets securely indoors, especially if they tend to get nervous or spooked around visitors.

By taking a few extra precautions, we can ensure our beloved pets stay safe and enjoy a stress-free Halloween! Happy Howl-o-ween, Down Under! ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฑ๐ŸŽƒ

๐Ÿ WATCH OUT, SNAKES ABOUT ๐Ÿ

With the weather warming up, snakes of all kinds will be making an appearance as they seek out warm spaces to bask.

This lovely girl, Penny, had an altercation with a basking snake a few weeks back. Curiously, she investigated the resting reptile and was subsequently bitten for getting a bit too close.

Initially Penny showed normal behaviour, but it soon declined into uncoordinated movements and wobbly legs, which the owner picked up as warning signs of an emergency situation! Once Penny was in the clinic, her condition rapidly declined to weakness of limbs, panting and disorientation.

Dr Adrian and the nurses ran a Snake Typing Test which came back with a positive result for Brown Snake Venom. With the symptoms and positive result, the team was able to begin treating Penny for a snake bite using snake antivenom, intravenous fluid therapy and monitoring her closely while she was treated.

Once the treatment was complete, for Penny's safety she was referred to the overnight emergency veterinarians at SASH for overnight monitoring and further treatment as needed, in case Penny were to decline further.

After two days filled with treatment and hospital stays between Dr Spot and SASH, Penny was in the clear and is now back at home with her loving family.

Penny was extremely lucky, and although there aren't many ways to avoid snakes from getting into your yard or being in public spaces, it is advised to avoid letting your pets wander into long grassed areas, and minimise "hiding spots" around your yard that snakes could use to hide from prey (piles of wood/rocks in gardens, leaf litter/debris around the yard, piles of toys, garden equipment, etc.)

If you do happen to find a snake in a strange place that could pose a threat to it's safety, animal safety or public safety, please contact WIRES on 1300 094 737 and follow the advice that is given.

Let's all show some love for Penny and her wonderful recovery! ๐Ÿพ
